  • Sorry the audio in the first 20 seconds is a bit wonky while I am walking. It's fine once I stop moving around. Also, please let me know if anyone else has problems with the volume when recording on this machine! I can't be the only one in the universe, right?
    This video is a document of me making up a song to record on the Tascam MF-P01 4-track cassette recorder. It's a really fun little bare bones 4-track that I loved using except for when it nearly blew out my ear drums.
    Thanks for watching!
    Time stamps:
    0:00 Intro
    0:59 I need a new tape!
    1:24 Laying down a guitar track (and blowing out my ears)
    3:43 The drum set up/recording drums
    4:14 Bass talk
    4:47 Time for vocals!
    5:48 Mixing down to the DAW
    7:40 Time to say goodbye
    8:17 The song which I called Perhaps I Could Just Hide Behind You For a Little While

    I ended up recording an acoustic version for the Patreon crew and it turned out really nice! Check it out here: www.patreon.com/posts/76661516

      Thanks Mike! Broken tape machines are a sad affair. I hope you’re able to get them working again someday!

    I love it! I didn’t know you could slow down the tape like that. I’m definitely gonna try to steal that if I ever actually make any music ever again.

      Yeah! Isn’t that fun!? My other 4-tracks have a pitch bend on them. This technique probably isn’t great for the machine, but it’s kinda junky anyway.

    Glad you were able to push through the quirks of this tiny ear destroying device for our listening pleasure.

    Interesting, got the same volume problem with the same machine (track 2 and 4). Anyway, nice vid! Love the manual detuning😁😋

      Then I’m not crazy! I couldn’t find anyone else complaining about it on CZcams. So weird.
      How dare they not give me a pitch wheel!?

    "I don't know. I don't know what this stuff is." Same Jason, same.
    EDIT: Also wow, solid ending track. Reminds me of wacky 90s hidden tracks at the end of maybe a Guided by Voices or Amps for Christ album. That kind of vibe. Nice work Jason. :)

      Thanks dude! I keep forgetting, I need to take it into band practice to see how much better my drummer would make it!

    So great. As always. Did you do any panning in the final mix to daw? Would’ve been fun to try the bass and guitar hard panned away from each other.
    This was a fun vid. And love goofing in the studio and experimenting. ❤

    • @jasonelambeth
      @jasonelambeth  Před rokem

      I wanted to, but since I mixed it down to two tracks I just kept it straight up the middle and panned each track hard. Next time I will have to do some panning!

    I did start recording my songs in 4 track revorders in 90s. Good times.

    Sick you are like Kurt Cobain so now it's a must I sub.i don't know if you went mono in for when it was loud !this unit is mono only input this can make it loud if went stereo in.

    • @jasonelambeth
      @jasonelambeth  Před rokem

      Oh man, that is some high praise, I'll take it though!
      I thought I was all mono, but there might have been some tracks where I was recording with a mic that might have been stereo. I'll definitely keep that in mind for next time. Thanks!

    Great video, thanks! Loved watching the journey.
    Can I ask why you recorded the four tracks from the Tascam down to two tracks in the DAW? Wouldn't you want to have one Tascam track = one DAW track?

    • @jasonelambeth
      @jasonelambeth  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I was thinking that it might be a bit louder if I mix it down to the two tracks and then pan them vs. just having the one track.
      Thanks for watching!!

    Something was generally weird with that guitar track tbh. It seems to be too loud in the final mix, too, and the vocal is too quiet.
    The mfp01 rules, though. It's such a cute little unit, and it sounds really nice, considering how horrible these devices can sound. I'm a metalhead and I am used to portas being driven to their limits and saturating into a wall of lofi bliss (for example Slayer's Def Jam records demo).

    • @jasonelambeth
      @jasonelambeth  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yeah, that little Squier sounds pretty awful. The mix was done without much thought and probably done in headphones. But, I do tend to put vocals pretty low in the mix.

    I have one of these bad boys and I have the same volume issue. The track you're recording is so loud it makes playing in time veryyyyyyyyy difficult. It makes it's utility very limited, for me at least.

    • @jasonelambeth
      @jasonelambeth  Před rokem +1

    That model is a POS .....strictly entry level junk produced in the very last era of cassette multitrack rec orders .....do yourself a favor mr hipster and spend a few bucks on a better quality machine with individual line outs and line ins for each channel .....makes transferring to digital much easier

    • @jasonelambeth
      @jasonelambeth  Před rokem +2

      Lol. Yeah, this was just an experiment to a song to a computer and try to get it to sound halfway decent. I also hadn't used it in forever and thought it might be fun to record on again. I was totally wrong though. I have other four tracks that I will most definitely be sticking with in the future.
