You can. In fact I have just let the lamp burn dry and when it’s cool take the chimney and flame spreader out and rub my finger around it in a circle. That way you can still get a wick flat and level even after the lamp has had fuel in it.

Nice technique, will it work for saturated round wick if I try to dry it out of kerosene?
