      Exactly!! When I commute to "work" I basically pretend I'm Rossi and that Subaru Outback is Marquez. A grand prix in first-second gear only. Some brief power wheelies and back it in here and there. I look forward to going to work. Quicker!

    On the flip side and against what most people say, I find the 15 onward R1 to be very comfortable. Seat is hard but pretty wide so ya but spreads nicely. I'm also 6"3 and find the longer reach to the bars roomy and the pegs offering lots of room. It it more roomy and comfortable than my 02 R1. ALso, power mode 1 2 3 do make different power. 1 and 2 generally have same peak power, but 2 is softer in the mid range, and make s 3-5 hp less from 8000 rpm upward. POwer mode 3 is around 7 hp down and even softer in the mid range.

      Agree about the comfort I'm 6.3 as well and when I test rode the 2018 r1 I instantly found it comfortable and fit me like a glove especially with the racing suit on and actually more comfortable for me than my zzr1400 which was odd because I always heard how uncomfortable r1 is.

    When you talked about how brakes work it reminded me of the fly by wire system introduced into jet fighters and later to passenger planes by Airbus. The idea is the same. You apply inputs on controls, your inputs are analysed by the computer and computer applies the necessary adjustment to flight surfaces.
    Yamaha surely has to work and refine it's braking system as you are not the only one complaining about them. But it's simply amazing how advanced things are getting in our daily transport vehicles.
    Thank you for the great review

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  Před 8 lety

      yes, that's exactly what it puts me in mind of too. I used to fly light aircraft years ago, so I often imagine parallels with the world of aviation as that is where the very sharpest edge of technology is found.
      I'm getting used to these brakes now, but when you apply full force on them, you can definitely feel the bike saying "so, you want full brakes do you? well let me be the judge of that" only many times a second :)

    • @ehsan83
      @ehsan83 Před 8 lety

      it's kind of strange. i mean if you are in a serious situation when you need to apply a full brake and the bike doesn't give it to you. You are then simply sentenced to crash am i right?

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  Před 8 lety +1

      if you're a much better and faster track rider than I am, then maybe yes, but at my level I certainly won't be able to out ride the bike. On the public roads I can't foresee an eventuality where I know more about what's needed than the bike does

    • @ehsan83
      @ehsan83 Před 8 lety

      well that's assuring. I thought the situation was more serious than that. I think Yamaha might do some refinement of its system in the future versions as many complain about the brakes.

    I liked the video, but mostly disagree with the conclusion. I just did a 1200 mile ride on it and my only two complaints are the lack of radiator guard for the upper radiator and the fuel gauge system. It should could down vs up as an option. But I love it so much. No regrets.

    This is a great review. Covered everything I would want to hear to buy one. I'm on a 2014 model and this sounds like a different beast altogether. My 14 r1 isn't as comfortable as my 08 but realise they are now designed even more for the track. I'm at Donington on the 21st to ring its neck and will be in a mode once the rubber is warm, although mine now seems a lot less techie than the 15 model. Thanks for the vid great watch

      Engine wise, you probably wouldn't notice much of a difference in the engine department and the 14 R1 is still a beast of a bike and probably more comfortable day to day.
      I'm at Donny myself on the 15th but I'll be riding my 2007 screamer R1 track bike. Enjoy your day 👌

    Nice informative review. I recently bought a 2015 R1M that had a mere 900 miles on the clock that I have converted for track use. I have binned the standard master cylinder for a Brembo and retained the standard calipers but by passed the fly by wire so hoping that will do the trick. I wasn't too impressed when I rode the bike on the road and had heard that the majority of track riders had pretty much ridiculed the brake set up. You answered my question about the difference between the 2 quick shift modes so looking forward to getting out and trying it out.Only gripe/disappointment for me is that I have to invest in an auto blipper which should really be standard on a hog of this calibre(and cost!!)

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  Před 8 lety +1

      Yes, I found the S1000RR much more bearable for street riding. You might want to consider looking into BMWs plans for 2017 though, as their range will all have to be Euro 4 compliant by then which will likely make the bike less good, and probably more expensive. Just look what it's done to the ZX10R :(

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  Před 8 lety +1

      Many thanks, I try to keep them shorter, I cut out about 25 minutes just to get it to half an hour. If you're planning any kind of long journeys of more than an hour or two, then I really wouldn't recommend the R1. The S1000RR on the other hand is well up for that kind of distance. I test road one last year, and it felt very comfortable (for a sports bike) and it would be the one I'd chose for sports bike touring

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  Před 7 lety +2

      it's the Stock R1. The wind protection is excellent but mine does have a bubble screen on it which isn't a stock item. Many professional reviewers claimed it had the best handling of all the then current crop of litre sports bikes back in 2015, but in the real world handling is a very subjective thing. All modern Superbikes handle superbly, and it's just a matter of preference towards which one suits your particular riding style, there's no single bike that handles better than the rest in all situations, but for me the new R1 is the best handling bike I've ever ridden and I've ridden the BMW

I exchanged the old z and ended up with a very clean 2002 R1 which is very capable and usable even though it has none of the electronic gizmo's. Suits me fine except for the gearing, I will try replacing rear sprocket with 40t for longer gearing. Ironically this review first put me in frame for R1's, albeit 21'st century. Curious, when you say the bike is uncomfortable but you got used to it, do you think it was a case of conditioning ? I only ask as i found when I bought my first super sports ( zx10r 2006 ) it crippled me for the first 500 miles or so, then i was doing 6-700 mile day trips on it and felt fine, and found it more comfortable than my 2017 MT-09 tracer and 2009 CB600F. Im looking at getting a 15/16 R1.

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  Před 5 lety +2

      I think that sports bikes require a certain amount of core muscle strength to ride comfortably, so It's possible that at first most people find them a bit hard work, but the more you ride them the stronger your core becomes, and so they feel more comfortable as time passes.
      You may find however, that the 2015+ R1 is a lot more cramped than a 2006 ZX10 so I'd recommend a decent test ride before you part with your cash 👍

      That's no great hardship mate, the big Kwak is a lovely bike and was a very very close second to the R1 for me (I really wanted the performance pack option). The reach was lovely and it's a stunning looking and sounding bike, I was just put off by the foot peg position which was a tad to cramped for my old knees.
      All modern Superbikes are fantastic these days and there isn't a bad one. It all comes down to personal preference and there's no wrong decisions when choosing one.
      Enjoy your cracking machine:)

    I have this exact bike and I love it but u arent wrong it is extremely uncomfortable after like...15-20mins of riding....especially through the city...HOWEVER i am optimistic that you said after a while you get used to it....I only have 600miles down. I did sit on the GSXR1000R and I almost immediatly regretted my decision...so I am hoping it gets more comfortable...and im young only 28.

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  Před 7 lety +1

      City riding on any modern litre bike is a pain Jeff, the S1000RR is about as comfy as they get these days, but once you get a bit of open road in front of you the R1 suddenly makes more sense. However, if you want to feel what this bike is really capable of, then do a track day. Owning a modern sports bike like this and not doing the occasional track day is like owning a pet leopard in 3rd floor studio flat. Technically you could do it but it's totally out of its element 😂

      none of the main manufacturers make a bad bike these days, so it's all down to personal preferences of each bike's characteristics and features. this vs 2013 rsv4 in matters of supersport oath commuter?😂 in 1000s i used to own r1 98 r1 raven a 1098s 2008 the beast 2006 r1 raven and raven us spec 2009 crossplane a k12 1000 zuk and now my old lady k61000
    k6 gixxer eats them all alive despite weaker brakes and funniest steering than any other bike of its era but still is a mad dog. r1 though has always been the real fun even if you need full physiotherapy sessions each time you get off the yamaha. im torn between a 2013 rsv4 standard brand new leftover with 4 yrs quarantee and a 4000km used r1 2016 with full sc project and superbike unlimited flash tune 😍 what i dont like is the fact ..who really needs all of them electronics and the 'why not do it black' yamaha covers but i have a soft spot in ma heart for yamahas so shes forgiven
    great great great review mate

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  Před 7 lety +1

      oh yes, the matt black R1 was always the one that I wanted, but in the uk it's either the red, blue, the anniversary yellow or if you can afford one the R1M. I'm pretty sure that Yamaha did release a black version, but not in the UK for some reason.
      You have an impressive litre bike pedigree, so you'll have no problem with the R1. A box fresh 2013 RSV4? that's quite tempting, but Aprilia have made a few refinements since then, and performance wise the R1 will top it in every measure, but still tempting though just for that V4.
      I'd be careful buying the R1 that's already been heavily modified, as someone will have been thrashing it, which isn't necessarily a problem, but I'd be worried that it might have had a hard breaking in period, which although frees up a few extra horses can lead to a reduced engine life.
      As for electronic rider aides, on the road you don't really need them, because you just can't push the bike safely or legally, but on track? oh feck yes! yes, yes and a thousand times yes. I did a track day on mine yesterday and I was painting black lines everywhere whilst backing it in under braking, and making all kind of fun shapes. I also have a 2007 R1 track bike (a 4C8 pre crossplane screamer) and I am much faster on my 2016 because I can get on the brakes later, turn in harder and power out of the corners much harder. it's sublime!

      wow thanks for the super reply. tempting indeed for v4 but older spec as you mentioned exact what crossed my mind plus the r1 because is already fully tax paid is 1500grands cheaper is july 2016 production. Think ill go with the r1 dont think the engine will blow the owner is more freak than me in matters of taking care his bikes he oath to.rossi picture every morning to bless it proper ahahaha but if the engine blows
      ... hey, we only live once i guess
      ill have my k6 for support haha only a valve adjustment and here we go 20.000more km stress free:p
      as for the r1 modes they function as the 09? i mean they are tuned from yamaha or you have access to traction control and fueling etc etc
      thanks brother..i agree with you in the b mode . same mode for me i guess. i rarely made a mode change on my 09 think im getting old for wheelie king pin as my lehendary honda xr years haha. on std mode though that r1 i remember she was a proper weapon

    try some ferodo st (sinter) pads. night and day difference. much much better. will fix all of your issues.
    i also very much like the abs and ubs braking. i had to rely on it to keep me from blowing through an intersection. i had a brain fart and needed to stop in a very short distance from around 60mph. laid on the brake as hard as i could. bike shrugged it off and came to halt in a 100% controlled manner in a way not even rossi could do it. the bike probably saved my life that day. i had flashes of going through the intersection and having to dodge cars or them dodging me. i know a lot of guys remove the abs but i think theyre nuts. there was no way a bike without these systems could of made that kind of stop without flipping the bike or going way out in the intersection

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  Před 7 lety +1

      well, i always like to heed the voice of experience so this sounds like sage advice. I have to admit that the brakes feel a lot better now that they're properly bedded in and I've gotten used to giving them a bigger handful than say a set of Brembo M50s. If you say that the Ferodo sintered are the way forward then I'll take you up on that advice.
      I can understand why experienced trackday riders might want to disable abs, as you get a better feel for the limits, but on the road it's abs all the way and only a fool would claim that they can brake better and safer without.

    How would you compare the cross-plane to the V4? I know the Tuono is tuned differently than the RSV4 which is more similar to the R1. I like the Aprillia, but scared of the reliability.

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  Před 8 lety

      Yes the R1 is quite similar to the RSV4 where most of the grunt is high up the rev range and like the RSV4 is has more pull from 8k onward than say the Fireblade or the pre-crossplane R1s. The Tuono on the other hand, has noticeably more grunt in the mid range than the R1, but runs out of power while the Yamaha is still pulling hard at 11k plus.
      I did 6000 miles on my Tuono with zero issues. Aprilia seem to buck the trend in Italian reliability and are made to last, I'd have another tomorrow.

    • @spktylr
      @spktylr Před 8 lety +1

    Hi ....I recently bought Yamaha R1 and this is my first Superbike. Can you let me know what are the safety measures to be taken to keep the bike in good condition in winter. I normally park the bike outside with a nice weather protection cover. Is it safe to keep the bike outside. I live in Texas where the temperatures are from 1 to 15 F.

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  Před 7 lety +2

      Bikes don't really do well living outside in general, but if you have no other option then I'd invest in a bottle of ACF50 and paint it liberally on all the bare metal components (except the brakes and the exhaust), and also spray liberal amounts of WD40 or a similar water dispersing product onto the electronic components (under the seat especially).
      If they salt the roads like they do here in the UK, then make sure to wash it off after every trip out. I takes a worryingly short amount of time for road salt to start corroding bare metal and electronics, so you need to keep on top of it if you want to keep your bike looking shiney.
      In spring you will want to remove the fairing side panels and clean under them, and anywhere else where water and spray can get in.
      Also be extras careful riding in cold wet conditions on a sports bike seeing as it's your first one. Even with rider aids such as ABS and traction control, you can still find yourself on your ass before you even rigister what's happened. Try to keep the bike as upright as possible and always feed in the power and the brakes with great care.
      Good luck with it.

    This bike has a 600 bike size with a 1000cc engine. I'm 6ft so its not designed for me.

      VeeFour in terms of bike size, does it have similar ergonomics to the gsxr 1000 k7 k8

      I'd say not. The Gixxer has always been a relatively roomy sports bike, and the new R1 is definitely one of the most (if not the most) racy seating positions of any bike, and there's very little compromise for the road. However I'm a tall 46 year old and I've got used to it, and regularly ride it all day.
      The foot peg position is actually quite comfortable, and a lot less extreme than say the ZX10R. It's mainly your wrists that feel it the most
