Great story, thanks for sharing! Got scammed by a border agent. Gave me a 180 days permit but put on the computer only 7 days which is a free permit. I paid him 600 pesos for the permit and never gave me a receipt so he could pocket the money later. I found out about it when i went to get my residency permit and the officer at INM told me that my permit expired already. The whole thing cost me another 1500 pesos that I have to pay to get my residency. The moral of the story is that you should pay for that permit with a CC and always ask for your receipt.

I have been living in Mexico since 2009. Many times the scams are just a few pesos and I overlooked that. One time when my Mexican 'friend' scammed me and I found out, I asked why did you do that, you are my friend.
He said "What did you expect? You have it and I need it."

I crossed the border August 2023 at Del Rio, Texas (Ciudad Acuna) and somehow understood that I needed to go into the customs office to obtain my vehicle permit to travel to Puerto Vallarta. This border crossing was very small and the three girls in the office spoke hardly any English. I also needed photocopies of my license, registration and passport. My dog barks incessantly at anyone who approaches my vehicle; this was likely my saving grace.

what a story! now I dont feel so bad being scammed for 50 pesos at breakfast this morning. we ordered 2 coffee and cake specials they had on the chalk board out front. when we for the bill they had charged us full rice for all the individual items. we questioned it and at first he apologized and said he would change the bill. he soon came back and told us that the cakes we ordered were not part of the special and that it only applied to brownies and tarts. yet on the chalk board it said pastel. unfortunately my Spanish isnt good enough to debate with the guy and my Mexican girlfriend gave in too easily. so he got 220 pesos that was on the bill and we will never go back there again. and I think that is the big thing that you overlook in your story... a lot of people wont have the language skills to get themselves out of that situation.

If you are not from Mexico, they know the minute you open your mouth and start speaking, it is what it is. Best way to deal with this is learn spanish, and be firm with Restaurants, refuse to pay for overcharges and by the way, there is NO tips in Mexico. I showered him with pesos and he turned beat red and called the cops. The cops confiscated all the money - so I was ahead already. They took me to the police station and I refused to pay anything, so they sat me by a steel door with people rustling around on the other side of it - I'm thinking they only ask for $20 and I have hundreds in cash on me, so I paid the $20 waving it in the air. They ran to get the $20 and crashed into each other, but as they reached for the money I pulled the bill back and said "I need a receipt". They said "we don't give receipts". I showed them a business card from my friend in Mexico city who was "Jefe" or chief of an agency and told them I'll get a 100% refund if I have a receipt. If you perceive you might be getting scammed, just tell them how wonderful the Mexican People are and how honest they are with excellent family values; then, they too will take the high road. Once a Mexican kid that was almost an adult acted like he was trying to scam me, but wasn't good enough to carry it off, so I perceived he didn't have any money. I gave him 100 pesos and told him what an outstanding person he appeared to be. He reluctantly took the pesos and changed into an excellent partner - I'm sure he was ashamed of his initial hostility.
