KDKA-TV Promotions 1979-1996

  • Here’s a “time capsule” of selected KDKA-TV on-air promos from ’79-’96.
I attended a retirement party for Drew Moniot, a former director at KDKA-TV. Friends at the party reminded me of the many promotional campaigns Przyborski Productions produced for KDKA from 1979 through 1996. Those were the “analog” days of 35mm film production, film-to-tape transfers, and tape-to-tape video editing.
A TV station’s “creative services director” is responsible for promoting the channel. This includes the concept & design of billboards, radio spots, print advertising, and TV commercials that showcase the station’s on-air talent and news broadcasts. Audience ratings establish the amount of money a station charges advertisers. Ratings are a big deal and usually the basis for evaluating a creative services director’s job performance. This intense focus on ratings and station rankings was especially true in the days before the internet and before social media. Back in the ’70’s-‘90s, KDKA-TV was consistently the number one news station in Pittsburgh.
I was fortunate to work with 3 of KDKA’s creative services directors… Brad Crum (1979-1982), Art Greenwald (1985-1988), & Lorraine Sneebold (1988-1996). The promos we produced were often music-driven, high-energy spots that featured KDKA’s on-air talent and teamwork between station employees. Today, TV stations usually promote specific news stories that are scheduled for that day’s newscast. (Note the dates above are production dates, not employment dates.)
The earliest of these promotions aired 40+ years ago. They are a visual tribute to KDKA’s talent and staff, many of whom are retired or unfortunately, no longer with us.
TECHNICAL STUFF: All footage photographed by Glenn Przyborski who also edited many of the spots. Promos were transferred from 2” or 1” composite analog masters or protection masters. Video was processed through a Teranex2D image processor for 3-2 pulldown removal, blanking correction, noise reduction & up-conversion from SD to 1080P.

The 11 pm Eyewitness News Update companion open, to the one seen and heard first, had anchor Patti Burns saying at the beginning, "We've got it and we're bringing it home" with a shot of a news van.

CS Keys looked to be a rising star on KDKA, he seemed to have it all - good looks, charisma, outgoing personality and definitely perfect for tv. Then I remember it came out that he was a domestic abuser of his wife or girlfriend and all of a sudden he was gone. It was like KDKA couldn't wait to cut ties with him. I would bet anything if he never did that he was being groomed to be the "face" of KDKA in the 2000's and definitely the replacement for Bob Kudzma.

Any other KDKA promos that combine local slogans (like Here's 2 and KD & You) with CBS network campaigns?
I know past the 2:57 mark, KDKA added its own personal touch to CBS's Looking Good Together. That personal touch was HERE'S 2 by Klein&.
I also know that, when KDKA did a version of Get Ready for CBS in 1989, they added the lyrics to KD & You into the localized version of the CBS 1989 fall campaign.

11:22 I didn't see Jim Lange do a "Chorus Line" act to promote "The $1,000,000 Chance of a Lifetime" for the gang at Ardmore Boulevard! I bet Mary Hart, John Tesh and the "Entertainment Tonight" crew would copy this, after a Steelers-Browns game at 3 Rivers for the folks at Television Hill! I don't see Paul Kangas and William Conrad show off his dancing skills to promote "Nightly Business Report" and "Wild, Wild World of Animals" at a Pens game at the Igloo, shilling for donations for 4802 Fifth Avenue! And don't get me started with "$25,000 Bingo Mania", "Channel 11's $50,000 Jackpot Bingo", and that stupid soap opera "Pittsburgh's (Not So) Great Entertainer" had...a soap opera before prime time based on repetitious superstitions, wonderful job, Eddie Edwards, you get a gold star! That's why this Evening Magazine promo was the best of the "KD+You" era. After Evening went off the air, KD had different programs, while 4 had Deborah Norville /Mary Hart and 11 had Pat Sajak/Vanna White/Alex Trebek..."America's Time Machine?" "Hollywood Squares (with Whoopi)?" Give me a break! At least Gateway Center finally stuck with something, with "the Insider", and the return of "Extra (with Mario Lopez)" was better than the original...the only things worth seeing today in Pittsburgh TV? KD playing the National Anthem, before their morning newscast. It's at half-past 4 AM, but at least KD (under CBS Pittsburgh) has the anthem here on CZcams...great to see a television tradition back on the air...CZcams has plenty of sign-on and sign-off clips, especially their analog farewell...go see it, it's great! Sorry for the length of this comment, the Evening Magazine/Chorus Line promo and the "We're growing with you, with Renaissance 2, WE'RE EYEWITNESS NEWS!" spots were outstanding! How 'bout some KD promos from 1996-current?
