In this video, I take an in depth look at the settings you can use to get maximum sustain out of your compressor. This is a question I have received many times over the last while and I figured it was about time to do a video dedicated to it. I really hope you enjoy the video.

Excellent video, Jason. I've been waiting for a video just like this. In particular, I really like the way you took the time to walk us through each step carefully and A/B'd the signals. For those of us that have struggled with "hearing" compression, it makes a huge difference in understanding how it works.

Perfect timing. Exactly what I needed to know. I've gained a new appreciation for the use of Compressors in Helix because of your videos. Thanks

Fantastic! I was able to adopt these settings as a baseline to adapt across all 8 of my snapshots, from clean through to soaring lead.

Comp and EQ are evasive mystery me. I will be adding this to a compressor favorite today. Thanks bro!

I was messing with the comp block before the amp last night, and trying to find the sweet spot. Super helpful video as always, thank you!

Great work Jason, as always! Quick question, how do you judge threshold on the hx stomp, as it doesn't have gain reduction meters?

  • @mikegibsonincognito4580

Thanks again for an excellent video Jason. I seem to remember from your other videos you also increased Amp Sag and bias x. With most of my presets sustain seems to be the most difficult to achieve. Will try this ASAP. I have requested a sustain block through line 6 but I am guessing it not that simple. Cheers

Hi Jason , great video on something I’ve been trying to achieve so extremely helpful for me on my HX FX , my question is I use a similar template to yours in my signal chain where I’ve got a smoothing compressor at the end of the chain and wondered if I should or could switch that off when I switch in the comp for sustain ?
    Thanks Alan

I’m imagining that the added noise could become pretty bad on a higher gain sound, although I suppose you wouldn’t need as much compression since high gain amps and pedals are usually doing their own compressing. Gonna try it. As always, fantastic job!
(Also it warms my heart when I see you remember to use the space bar… ;) )

Great playing and info for clean. I have a Keeley comp the new one. I tend to use a lot of fuzz sometimes two fuzzes at once, I always feel the Keeley takes all the great dynamics out of my highs especially with the fuzzes. I also have a podgo, I might try the fuzzes with it, since it has much more parameters. I have my Keeley at the end of all my dirt. Right now I rarely turn my comp on, but like I say I’m using quite a bit of overdrive and fuzz most of the time. I guess I’m going for that Cream sound for the most part

Hi Jason and thanks for the time you invest on these amazing videos. Is there a specific one where you explain your usual last "mastering" block always using eq+comp at the end of path, please? Thx and thank you from Italy. Peace. Pier.

Just tried your tricks on a Pod Go and it worked well! Some of the differences are difficult to hear so I feed my signal into a DAW and look at the change in the db View window. It works well.
I heard from a commenter on another video that it's best to put the compression after the amp because it has more response. I tried it between the Amp/Cab and after the Cab but couldn't hear any difference. Is there anything to where the compressor is placed in the chain?

@JasonSadites I'm curious, is there any context that you might do some things like Threshold or Ratio in the opposite way you did in this tutorial? Also, would you use this technique on lead tones as well? Are there scenarios that you'd say "don't use this strategy"? Thanks brother! 🙏🤘😝🤘🎸🎶🤣🙏

To get this sustain, the compressor should be at the beginning of the signal chain or I can do that at the end of the signal chain as well? Any help to clarify my doubt please.

don't like compression. Takes away the pick and volume dynamics. I use Jasons template with his eqs but I leave the compressor out.

turn your amp up, push the power tubes and move air, which means use real gear not that fake digital stuff
