    Hated that his teammates were stopping him from leaving, they should walked off together. If they (the players) don't make a statement, racism will never stop. The federation can reschedule the game behind closed doors, or not have any fans for at least 3 matches.

      Walking off the pitch and forfeiting the game only gives the racist fans what they want. They will be encouraged to do it again because they got the response they wanted. The best response is to score goals and make their team suffer on the pitch for what was said.

      The thing is, I don’t believe Vitoria fans are racist, they are extreme and assholes, so they knew that making racist noises and using racial insults would affect his performance and give their team a higher chance of winning. Porto players tried to stop Marega because they felt that by leaving the game it would give those fans what they wanted, a better chance to win the match... Nevertheless fans should be severely punished because what they did is unacceptable, but saying the players attitude is worse is just stupid, trust me when I say they support him more than any keyboard warrior stating they are racists as well...

    Porto FAN here. I think that players at first did not realize exactly what was going on. In fact, it didn't make sense that there were racist slurs. Marega was a player appreciated by Vitória fans when he played there, and the club currently has several African players. I want to believe that among an avalanche of insults of all kinds to Marega, after he scored, only a fraction of victorias fans launched racist insults. I am a fan of FC Porto, and I know that most of Vitória's fans do not see themselves in this. In fact, it is important not to make this subject turni into a club war. Unfortunately, stupid people are present in all clubs, including my FCP, and racism must be combated inside and outside our homes. I think, however, that the other players, both from Porto and Vitória, should not be condemned for initially trying to demote Marega. They were trying to understand what was going on and calm him down. We shouldn't criticize them for not leaving the field with Marega. If they did that, given the current context of Portuguese football, and the game itself, today it would be possible to accuse the FCP of taking advantage of a serious issue to win the game. That is why the referee should have taken responsibility and taken the initiative to stop the game. It is a very delicate situation, in which one should not throw opinions without understanding exactely what happened. I can only blame the idiots who threw racist slurs and the referee for the reasons I have already said.

    To all of those criticizing the teammates and the coach for not walking off, you re idiots. Walking off and forfeiting the match would just make the racists happy because they would fulfill their objective, they would definitely have repeated it against other players. Also his teammates weren t trying to make him stay, just calming him down so he could be subbed off. They were protecting him from a red card and the racist fans. And the coach was also screaming its a disgrace to those same fans. Marega posted about this, so don t attack the Porto players nor the coach before you know the full situation

    • @miguelrebocho1171

      @nerdydreamer they were standing with him. If they weren t they wouldn t have subbed him off and would have forced him to play the rest of the match because of points. They tried to calm him down so he wouldn t get sent off and then they let him be subbed. He would have gotten an unfair red card otherwise, and it would have been horrible to get a match ban for something that's not your fault Again, read Marega s post before you comment

    • @miguelrebocho1171
      @miguelrebocho1171 Před 4 lety

      @Douglas Taggart it wouldn t, that's literally what they wanted to happen. Stop the game, get the game rescheduled, so they don t lose the game. If they did that, the racists would be happy and would celebrate, this way, Marega walked out to avoid any more insults thrown towards him, and they still lost the game, so they re not only seen as racist assholes, they re pathetic racist assholes who ve exposed themselves to the world without accomplishing nothing of value for doing so. That for me is some of the best revenge you could have, aside from getting a ban from the stadium forever and going to prison I guess

    • @miguelrebocho1171
      @miguelrebocho1171 Před 4 lety

      @Douglas Taggart they don t lose points for that. They only pay fines. Also what you re suggesting would just lead to fans sabotaging other teams by pretending to be supporting from the rival team and then throwing racist insults, so said team would lose points. This would happen so frequently in derbies it would be ridiculous. No club can control all of its fans, no matter how hard they try. I still stand by the attitude taken by Porto, fans coach and team, any other outcome would have just made things worse for Marega, or given the racist the satisfaction they wanted.
      Also no one's saying it's being tolerated, ppl like this should be severely punished, but we should also transmit that acts like these are futile and only serve to make yourself look like an asshole, so we can drive away from stadiums ppl who want to vocalize these "mindsets"

    Kind of a catch 22; Walk off the pitch and make the racists feel they've won or stay on and get more frustrated. The problem is that all this racism, especially in Italy is being amplified by the media but isnt being punished by the league authorities. Im pretty sure a Man City-like punishment would teach these people a lesson and also make the clubs take more responsibility in who they let into the stands.

    What exactly did he do to 'defend his skin-colour' tho? For what exactly did the referee give him a yellow? Why don't you ESPN guys give us all the info regarding this incident when talking about it?! Why talk about it for your viewers if you're not going to properly inform us about it all... And why did he call out the referee for 'not protecting' him? Was it another player who 'racially abused' him or are referees in the portuguese league allowed to kick out fans/viewers for such verbal/degatory attacks against a player(only in case they've seen/heard it themselves I can imagine)?
    Like come on! Give us ALL the info, that shouldn't be too hard for (such) a sports channel... You have left us with more questions/uncertainty than answers/certainty.

    But benfica lost, and they needed the win to shorten distance soo.... and there were 5 or more black guys on the field, yet they only insulted marega, a former player oh theirs... people want to make a big deal of this but it was just insult for insulting, not real racist feelings

    Blacks seem to have a hard time in Europe. Whites seem to have a hard time in non-white countries. Maybe everyone would win if Europe was left for the Europeans, as the Dalai Lama suggested?
