  • In this video I review a new product by K&N filters, a washable cabin air filter that just came on the market July 2014, and show you my results after 10,000 miles of use of driving in the city of Los Angeles. I also show how to install a cabin air filter in a 2006-2011 Honda Civic. The results might be a shock to you!

    Reading a couple of these comments I came to the conclusion that some people are so clueless that they actually purchased the K&N Engine filter and somehow managed to shoehorn it into their Cabin airbox let alone use the wrong recharge spray. One guy said it smelled of oil and latex which is about the same smell of the engine air filters they produce because of the Red recharge oil. My cabin filter right out of the box didn't have much of a smell but it did deodorize the air quite dramatically which was fine with me. I really hope people aren't confusing the Cabin filter with the Engine Filter.

    I just got a K&N cabin air filter for my Honda Odyssey. I had the exact same thoughts as you about the K&N filter not hooking into the plastic tabs along the edge and not sealing like the old paper filter did. This is actually why I searched out a video, and so far yours is the only one I've found that talks about this.
    I was also confused how the instructions (as you mentioned) say that the filter goes in only one way. I can definitely rotate it 180 degrees (that is, rotating it around the axis parallel to the direction of the air flow), and this 180-degree rotation seems to make no difference on how well it fits. Is there an easy way to determine which orientation is correct? Or does this rotation not matter? I think you may have mentioned that you found an orientation that works better than another, but it wasn't clear to me.

    I'm kinda interested in one of these, I've emailed them to see if I could get the filtration information, and at what micron rating. My limited understanding of K&N is their intake filters are not that great, lots of marketing, but filter wise they filter very little (compared to OEM).
    From everything I've read K&N filters sacrifice filtration for airflow period. My previous car didn't have an cabin filter, I've lived without one most of my life. New car does, and while its probably a good idea to go OEM (rated like 99% at 1 micron) so good filters. I'm mostly interested in this due to being about 3x the cost but reusable, I doubt my car is air tight so I know dust will get in regardless.
    I'm just waiting for a response to my email to at least see if it does basically anything. I don't hate K&N I just think they market to the wrong audience with their products. Sure more air flow, but more material makes it inside the motor. More power if you have a motor which can utilize that added air. Motors work under a vacuum, they get all the air they need 99.9995% of the time there is still plenty of headroom with OEM filters. Its stuff like performance race cars, or after market turbos which benefit from this (once the computer is flashed).
    Not so much the typical consumer, so no real benefit, along with increased motor wear. Not a big deal for a race team which rebuilds the motor every race, it is for someone who wants their car go last 200k+ miles.

    I would in your case add a *seal* with electrical tape wrapped around the k&n filter to make it fit perfectly. If the filter is truly higher quality, it should do a better job filtering out dirt. Shouldn’t have to do this, but it may give more peace of mind.

  • @joseacuna3239
    @joseacuna3239 Před 4 lety +5

    It’s so subjective, recirculating air inside the cabin is not as seal as you would imagine, I mean, is not an airplane cabin (btw, cabins in airplanes leak, a lot) so, feeling dirty as you mention here is completely subjective. Filters trap a very small amount of particles because the main reason you have one is because of pollen getting inside and giving you an allergic reaction. Of course a clean air filter will improve cooling in the cabin and air flow but manufacturers recommend to be changed every 20k miles.

      Hey Brian,
      I didn't dislike your video but it seems like you've invested a considerable amount of time in recording it, and expressed a lot of concerns about air quality in your vehicle and its effects on your health (feeling gross, lungs, skin, etc) as you're driving 2 hours each day, then at the start of the video and a few times throughout you regarded running your vehicle in recirc only mode.
      Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a huge factor in your health, especially if you're driving for 2 hours a day. One of the primary factors resulting in poor IAQ is a lack of fresh outside air. There are a lot of varying numbers for regulation in buildings and what not based on location, but most places REQUIRE 25% - 35% changeover per hour, meaning that every hour, 35% of your air is replaced with fresh, outside air. Air that is not changed over becomes stagnant and can have adverse affects on your health.
      Another factor that can result in poor IAQ is low relative humidity, especially if it's very humid outside of your vehicle. You did not mention so, but if you're running your AC 24/7 when you're driving then you are removing most of the humidity from your air which can make you sick if you're constantly exposed to that air, compounded by not having fresh air changeovers.
      The cabin air filter in your vehicle is primarily used (and in most cases only used) to filter outside air, so you can have it on and not get sick from stuff in the outside air. It's there so you don't have to use recirc 24/7 if you have asthma or other respiratory issues caused by poor outside air quality.
      I know its easy to look at the dirty end of the air filter and think that its gross, and you're breathing all that stuff, but it is dirty because the filter is doing its job and cleaning the air. The filter generally doesn't degrade in its ability to filter your air as it gets dirty, but once it gets dirty enough the air flow will be reduced, and that is when the small stuff gets through the cracks due to the high pressure caused by the fan and low airflow through the filter (this is why we have to replace or clean the filter).
      As stated, the filter in your vehicle does not filter inside air. If you are concerned about dust and all that stuff in your air and insist on using recirc mode, despite the health issues caused by stagnant air, I would suggest frequently vacuuming your carpets and cleaning the surfaces in your vehicle. That is the only way to get rid of it when you only use recirc.
      Personally, I would only suggest using your AC and Recirc unless it's hot as hell outside or really cold and you're trying to defrost your windows, or there is a high risk warning for air quality (usually caused by forest fires or smog). Even then, a better air filter like the K&N will probably be very useful if you still want outside air when there is a high risk.

    Brian, 2 days ago I purchased a K&N cabin air filter for my 2007 Toyota Camry. I was so confident in my K&N purchase that I threw the box in the garbage and threw away the receipt. I went back to AutoZone today to try to return the filter without the box and receipt and they said no so the filter is now in the trash. The air coming out of the vents in my Camry smelled like latex rubber and oil. I'm sure that the filter is very good at filtering fine particulate matter dirt and dust, but it was poor at filtering automobile/diesel truck exhaust. So, driving down the road I was feeling very nauseous from the latex rubber/oil/exhaust fumes. Also when you have to clean the filter with water you have to wait a long time for the filter to dry out properly because the blower motor fan sits underneath the filter and if any moisture or water gets on the electric blower motor fan you could have issues. The K&N is in the trash can and a stock paper filter is in the car, very happy.

I did that myself, i wasn't going to lose out...

    The filter might be loose around the sides, but thats not where the seal is made... KN filters have a rubber ring around the perimeter that seals between the interface of the rigid plastic bracket and the bottom edges of the rubber ring, the weight of the filter alone is enough to provide an air tight seal around the filter....
    A paper filter is squeezed into the bracket in order to help make the seal air tight. However, paper against rigid plastic won't be air tight at all... I would bet that the rubber ring on KN, although loose, provides a better seal around the perimeter of the filter.... Im an engineer btw

    He didn't install it properly, I have the same model car, filter VF2001,the filter is designed to fit into that tray,it has these flaps that insert right into the tray from and back side. Mine fit perfectly, nice and tight, no gaps or bumps, good air flow. He probably put it upside down or something.shame,you should have asked for help at AutoZone or something.

      They make different K&N cabin filters to fit each car so I imagine there is a filter for your car. Check their website knfilters com. But again my findings were that they didn't work as well as they should. Hopefully you watched my whole vid ;) thx

      +sellyourgift fyi oil does make a better filter media than paper, oil will attract dirt like a magnet. as for people claiming to get oil on the injectors with the engine filters their trouble is OVER oiling the filter when cleaning it takes only a light mist to re oil.

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  Před 8 lety

      Sounds logical! I just wish they made this cabin filter fit air tight around the edges. Then I could have tested the oil theory inside the car.

    im fine if it filters dirt and dust thats great! when i open my windows dust gets in. when i have my sunroof open dust gets in… when i walk around everyday i dont have a filter attached to my face so why should it matter how finely it filters i will never have to buy another cabin filter for the life of the car and can recharge it with different scented oils everytime after cleaning it!

    My man,whats the point in you buying a new cabin filter if you keep running your car's ac on recirculation?,you know, that filter was made to FILTER outside air coming into your car so you dont choke on your own carbon dioxide.

    • @chadbryant182
      @chadbryant182 Před 6 lety +1

      Just for information it does not filter out carbon monoxide what it does is keep the a coil clean cuz if the a coil gets dirty restricts the airflow you have to tear the whole dash apart that's what the whole thing of a cabin air filters for is to filter the air before going into the a coil not just outside air but also inside or circulatory are so that's just for your info has nothing to do with carbon monoxide you cannot filter carbon dioxide via paper or K&N Filter

    • @theopinion9452

    • @chadbryant182
      @chadbryant182 Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah my bad I said carbon monoxide but I meant carbon dioxide but it still doesn't do anything is filtering that it's just to keep your a coil clean so you don't have to tear apart your dash to get that cleaned or replaced because there's no way to get to it unless you Doterra Dash apart that's what the actual filters for

    • @theopinion9452
      @theopinion9452 Před 6 lety +1

      Chad Bryant All I said was that He bought a new filter for no reason,he said it in the video that he only uses the recirculating part of the a/c so basically there is no need for a new filter because he does not use it,therefore He is breathing his Carbon dioxide over and over again,is that more clear for you?

    • @chadbryant182
      @chadbryant182 Před 6 lety

      Arch perfectly care but it's cool you believe what you believe and I believe what I believe it's simple as that and all I was trying to find out is that it whether it's on recirculate or you're not outside are inside are it still has to pass through the a coil cuz all it does is open a door inside the recirculate or the air and then close it to allowed to cake outside air but it still has to pass through whether he had it on or not it still has to pass through that but you have a good day sir

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  Před 8 lety

      The video was made over course of a few months so this video unfortunately wasn't edited the way I wanted it. But you know the great thing in life is the next one I can learn from my mistakes. I kindly put short cuts at 0:16 seconds into the video but you obviously ignored those. Just know when you criticize others you show your short comings to all. And you always could have just found another video without commenting negatively, or just said something nicer. You look old enough to be a father, and I would hate it if someone damned your child on the internet as you did me and was harsh to them as well. I guess this is your way of "helping me" but again it just shows your faults and does nothing for me constructively which is what I want, if I made a mistake I want to learn from it not be mistreated for it! Treat people like you want to be treated and maybe, just maybe, you will find a different way to communicate your feelings to others. Make a video, publish it to youtube, and when you get your first comment like this you'll know what I'm trying to communicate to you. God bless and I hope this helps.

    I'm going to make it easier for everybody do not buy these they're just as bad as their air filters you're going to have to buy these oil kits it becomes a huge hassle I recommend that you stick with a good regular cabin filter like wix.

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  Před 7 lety

      For me if it fit where it sealed around the edges it would have been great. I've heard as long as you don't over oil them you are good. But I also hear the same sentiment you are saying that these filters are not worth it. I would have liked to have a filter I could reuse for a long time but no seal = no good. I just buy replacement OEM type filters online they work good and I recirculate air, I never take air from outside the car so it keeps the filters cleaner over time.

  • @MasterofPlay7
    @MasterofPlay7 Před 8 lety +1

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  Před 8 lety +6

      This filter is not used in your engine compartment, you are thinking of the other K&N engine air filters. This is for your cabin filter which filters air inside the car where you sit and breathe.
