LEVEL UP: I finally figured out how to post a trot without stirrups on my giant half lease warmblood

  • So my trainer (and Beau's owner, and owner of Grey Horse Farms [www.greyhorsefarms.com]) likes to alternate from a "fun" lesson (jumping, etc) to a "back to basics" lesson (flatwork and, of course, STIRRUPLESS work).
This week we did our back to basics lesson and while at first I was terrified to try again to ride the trot without stirrups (last time we had to do it on a longe line because my steering was atrocious), the lesson took a turn that I definitely did not expect.
I couldn't be more thankful for such an incredible trainer, and such a patient and wonderful horse like Beau. J
The moral of this weird story is: DO THE THING. You might just surprise yourself. Thank you for joining me and see you next week!

@@KateWilson-kc3hh out of curiosity do you guys normally do sitting trot. i've been doing stirrupless for a few weeks now (but i still use stirrups to get my horse warmed up in the posting trot before training starts) and i surprisingly didn't really feel sore. i'm wondering if it's because i do dressage and normally sit.
also important, i didn't try to post without stirrups. my horses half halt cue is partially knee roll pressure so i didn't want to confuse him.

@@animangle I do it usually as an exercise either to up his responsiveness (like open up trot on long side of arena and compress with sitting trot on short), slow him down if he’s spicy; or, conversely, squeeze him up a notch.
Sitting the trot doesn’t make me sore for some reason; only when I do it stirrupless. Beau has a big bouncy trot!
Your dressage must make you extra fit for stirrupless!
