I think the main problem with Hazbin, at least the first season, is that is suffers from "We have to get shit done" syndrome. Basically, they were given a slot that didn't correlate with the amount of plot that needed to expose so they made it all exposition so they could fit it into that slot. This could be because they were only given 8 episodes for the first season, or because they were afraid of being discontinued too quickly by Prime, as the Second Season was announced Mid-Season 1's production.
Hopefully, because they have a second season greenlit, these problems fade away. And hopefully, we get a longer season that fleshes everything out as opposed to season 1.

You know what it feels like? It doesn't feel like a new cartoon. It feels like this is a show that's been on the air and been made since its pilot released years ago. It feels like the show assumes that we already know enough about these characters that they can already start resolving character arcs like Vaggie wondering about who she is without Charlie, or Husk sipposedly pointing out everyone's flaws as if we should already know these characters very well or any of Angel Dust's drama.

It feels as if we've been dropped into season 2 rather than 1. The show should be about the Hotel trying to rehabilitate people into Heaven yet it's showing more focus on the Overlords and everything is clashing.
The show, or season 1, should have Charlie making a deal with Adam to have 6 months to get *insert number of demons here* into Heaven. Then drop in the last episode that an angel had been killed by one of the main cast.
Plus, I don't like the way Adam is portrayed. Instead of having him being a chainsmoker in tone with a foul mouth, he should have been sickly sweet. A villain clearly but with good manners.

And I think that’s how we’re supposed to think of their dynamic at first… until the moment when Val brings up Alastor. At that moment the tables turned, with Vox being the one who’s unreasonably infuriated-and Val knew that exactly would happen. Val isn’t just a hot-tempered, childish control-freak; he’s a volatile, abusive master manipulator that can coerce people into feeling and doing what he wants them to.
Valentino wanted Vox to calm him down by helping him get Angel Dust back, but we know that Vox simply told Val to lay low. So, Val informed him that Alastor was at the hotel, and Vox did exactly what he wanted afterwards. Val may have Stella levels of maturity but is Andrealphus-leveled in any other aspect, if that makes sense.
(Just wanted to add that Val babies Vox while teasing him about Alastor, exactly like how Vox babied him just moments ago. Vox pinched his cheek while saying “that why you earn the big bucks”, so Val pinches Vox’s cheek while asking if he’s still “mad that he [Alastor] almost beat you”. The pettiness here is hilarious ngl 🤣)

I think the issue is that the writers don’t know how to separate the story by seasons. Most show runners don’t know if they’ll get all of the seasons they want/need so what they’ll do is write a satisfying conclusion that either allows for more stories or can be quickly switched to a different conclusion should the next season be announced during development.
I think what Hazbin should’ve done is focus their first season rehabilitating sinners with only brief encounters with overlords and other people trying to stop them. Then they could move onto season 2 with focusing heavily on the overlords and the mystery of who killed the angel. There’s definitely a way to write this show so it works if the next season wasn’t even announced but it seems that the writers panicked and just crammed everything they could into one season.

    • @b_w_j

The writers probably did have to cram as much in as they could with how big companies tend to treat stories like this. I'd be willing to bet they got way less time (# of episodes/budget to work with) than they hoped or was necessary and with no guarantee of a second season they did their best.
I'm thinking the next season will feel like a "season 1, part 2" than a true second season since I can't see this phase in the story being complete in only 8 episodes, and the world the characters are established in is large and extensive, even when just confined in pride ring.

Yes but what enemies would you put against the hotel? Alastor alone could outpower every demon and we are leaving outside lucifer and charlie wich are rated by the author as the number 1 and 3 in power, with that world building you have to race to heaven where there are stronger enemies or to nerf charlie and his father (maybe making him disappear and making her unable to use her powers), how do i feel concerned about charlie and the hotel if i know that she can just vaporize everyone who tries to hurt her or her guests?

@@gage6355 For enemies against the hotel, I think the best people would be the other sins, Asmodeus, Mammon, etc. I personally think the sins should be in Hazbin Hotel because they fit in better with the shows message of trying to become a better person on top of being very powerful. I also think the sins should’ve been more antagonistic because Charlie is actively trying to get people to stop sinning which is what the sins want (at least I think because Helluva Boss have been very finicky with what rules and expectations the sins have to follow). It’d also prevent Alastair from out powering everyone or Charlie from using her power because the sins are closely tied with Hell’s hierarchy and fighting them may cause more issues then solving them. Plus I’d think it’d be more interesting if Angel Dust had a contract with Asmodeus rather than Valentino so Charlie can’t just obliterate him. I think it’d be cooler for them to try and find a loophole in the contract or expose Asmodeus in some way.
Aside from that, I also think the show’s overall approach to Heaven was poorly done, mainly because of Adam. He ruins a lot of interesting aspects and mystery because it’s so obvious Heaven isn’t a good place because why would they employ such a jackass? Like I mentioned in my original comment, I think heaven should’ve been written the most conservatively in the beginning because there’s just way too much going on with Heaven’s inclusion.

For the sins is a really good idea but again idk if it's enought for a season, 2 /3 episodes of confronting asmodeus are credible but at a certain point we probably still think that's stupid from charlie to not order him to free the guy being above him in power and hierarchy also without her father, probably they should have solved the problem making her far weaker (or at least not stating that she is litterally top 3 in the kingdom) and keeping away lucifer in someway. Still is really a good idea confronting the sins

Lately a few shows have had a Season 2 announced prior to Season 1 airing, only to later reveal that "Season 2" is actually just part of the same order as Season 1, only split in advertising to avoid paying the animators more. A first episode is all about introducing the characters and the world. Hazbin doesn’t do that or at least not well. The pilot did these things 1000 times better than the first episode and this is because the first episode doesn’t even try because it assumes you’ve already seen the pilot. The show expects us to already care about the characters without putting in any of the work. For example It’s revealed that the person that killed the angel is this random chick we’ve never seen before and barely know anything about and then they give her this whole dramatic song about it. Not only does this completely ruin what would’ve been an interesting mystery, but it also falls completely flat because we have no idea who this person is and have no reason to care about them because we just met them. I like the show so far. I think it’s solid, but it has some pretty major writing problems

When you have an idea you want to present (for example, war between hell and heaven) you tend to skip "the boring" parts, like world building, character development... you unfold the story already knowing everything. 2. More guest coming in the hotel's mission.
Overtime I do hope that Charlie will be greeted with more guest soon, more characters who want to actually join in for her redemption program.
    3. Charlie's Backstory.
I really am interested to see why Charlie is the kindest and selfless character after her background we got told so far from Husk's analysis of each one of the members.
Imagining how she was raised must had been mentally straining.
    4. Each one of the hotel staff and members warming up to Charlie and each other.
True, Charlie might be kinda...too positive but I would like to see someone like Angel, Husk, or some future's guest warming up to Charlie but still being themselves.
And 5: Alastor's plans or endgame.

Adam and Lute aren't angels. They're exterminators. If you've see the CHERUBS in Helluva Boss, they look like cutesy little animals. Adam is in heaven and curses because he ate the forbidden fruit and is the first human ever. Humans are more subjected to sin, + that he's an exterminator and kills people every year.

Similar to The Owl House, I'm sure they would have loved more episodic episodes and to take things slower, but when you work with corporations you have to work on their timeline, which often times means not having as much time or as many episodes as you'd like. It's the same with the live action One Piece show that cut out around two episodes I believe, so they had to cram more in less, which is probably why they weren't able to introduce Smoker in the first season.

I honestly think that they should have made hazbin hotel an episodic show. They only got 8 episodes, which isnt enough time to make a serialized story. The show was supposed to be about the hotel and redeming sinners but the show barly focuses on it because it to focused on the heaven-hell war plotline. I think it was a poor decision to make the show about a plot that was introduced in the first episode, rather than about the characters and their arks.

I don't have a problem with the pacing. Besides, the studio probably told them "you get this many episodes per season" so they shoved a bunch of episodes together. It's also a HUGE risk for a company to take on an animated show like this, because they are extremely expensive to make - again, why it's probably shorter than some would like. Of the issues from the show pacing is definitely one of the biggest episode. One felt so rushed, no time taken to like character dialogue, or development, moods and situations brought up, warm properly paste, and therefore no time to have a connection to it. The humour and dialogue also felt more immature and cartoonish, I get it it’s an animated adult series however an animated series is adult that doesn’t mean the dialogue has to be(edgy, curse words, and immature just for the sake of it, which I felt was the issue) the original pilot had childish humour and curse words, but I was all for a good reason, and it felt probably paced and well timed and was mature. This wasn’t that.

one issue i have with the writing is that vivzie has a habit of writing toxic gay relationships, which goes back to the zoophobia days. angel dust’s relationship with valentino makes sense contextually but then there’s charlie and vaggie. vaggie is emotionally weak without charlie and dedicates every aspect of her life to charlie. their relationship is supposed to be shown as more healthy but it just isn’t. vaggie literally sings about how she feels worthless if she can’t do anything for charlie. i want to see vaggie be able to break away from this way of thinking and be able to find herself again because she’s lost who she is in her relationship with charlie. the whole thing with adam that i appreciated is that he’s really no better than any of hell’s citizens. however, there should’ve been more condescension with the way he spoke to charlie. i love “hell is forever” but it’s basically just adam rolling his eyes to the idea of the hotel in the form of a song. i also think that we have a pacing issue regardless. it’s going very fast now and they’re introducing a bunch of subplots at once. however, it could go the other way and we’d have the same issue. they could slow down the pacing of the story but it would start to feel too slow because there are only 8 episodes in the season. hopefully season 2 will be a happy medium with good pacing

this is how i would handle what we have so far if we change 8 episodes a season to 12(or if needed 10)
episode 1 we get the pilot but done again specifically Introducing carmila carmine early (make her official debut here)(even if its just a clip of her holding the two assistants in a caring way (we dont know why but it sets up the dead angel reveal) ending with a camera shot of an Angels head filling the entire screen (so we dont know they're dead).
Episode 2 begins with the first half of the actual episode one along with an exploration of Charlie's goal's as alastor grills Charlie on why shes trying to save these sinners and pushing her (not agresivly but reiterating the same question in different ways with his smoth Charming voice getting into her head) throughout the episode to the point where just as shes about to have a mental breakdown and reveal a deeper motivation then just i want to save people (even if its a resigned i dont know) she gets a call and we explicitly dont here the other end but hear everything about charlies response and how her mood which was going down throughout the episode instantly jumps back to full chear as we end the episode on a camera shot of Adam smiling as we Hear Charlie say that she's been asked to attend a meeting in the place of Lucifer.
Episode 3 opens with charlies cheary song on the way to the meeting before switching to vaggie basically stating her goal to make a new better add for Charlie before she gets back whilst also spiting venom at alister for pushing her, which Alistair just pushes off with charn, and then we cut to Adam in a clearly defined room before cutting to Charlie entering the embassy and singing into the building before entering the meeting room (this clearly establishes that adams not actually theur because of the brief clip of him in a different room was presented just before charlie entered (setting up the joke of him being a hologram). Charlie enters the meeting and instead of the tone we got in the actual show instead Charlie is instantly swamped with paperwork which either he or lucifer need to sign which is really just a formality to acknowledge every single soul who perished in the extermination (this reinforces the idea that Lucifer's will was crushed because he had to sign paperwork acknowledging the crimes of every soul killed in each years extermination along with these papers stating that this signature as a mandatory acknowledgement Absolves the Exterminator of the Sin of Murder and Forgives all the sins of the sinner as they receive forgiveness and purification in their execution (each individual sin(not as a totality but as an individual action so if you stole a pencil and then stole an apple both actions would be labelled as theft then the item Date, time and personal justification(which by signing the contract acknowledges this as a sin no matter the reason for it) requiring a signature of acknowledgement from lucifer or his daughter this shifts the initial tone from Comedy to formality and sets up a line from adam that sinners cant be forgiven by paralling the lines on the contract speaking of forgiveness which Charlie's forced to sign before they can actually formally start the meeting (the plan was also using this to distract lucifer whilst they search for a missing executioner finding the corpse later).
After the meetings chunk one we check on the ad for the hotel plot for a few minutes before we get a time skip of hours for Charlie to read and sign every single death report and we see a small flicker Reveling adams not in the room as we get a song from Charlie going through the mental anguish of being forced to acknowledge every single soul killed in this years execution and relises this is why her Dad stopped dreaming but even though some of these people may be monsters they must be savable through some other method then this meaningless slaughter (Setup for the Labelling of it as Entertainment) as we see adam move in the song revealing he heard that as a here a stifled laugh Charlie doesnt (setting up his opposition to the concept of saving people) then after the song checking in on the ad plot as vaggies been struggling the entire time and at this point is getting stressed from how long Charlie's taking as well that something went wrong but also doesn't want to go after her till shes got the ad done along with not knowing Where alastor is and id trying to film the ad finding him and and eventually making the same deal she made in the actual episode 1 getting that hole sequence then getting back to the meeting as charlie signs the last death report and is straight up crying as the report basically gives them the most Insignificant of sins and even mentioned that in life he always Sacrificed himself to save others (but that sacrificing of his own body to save orhers from being defiled damned their soul)(think a sinner whos a perfect mirror to Charlie who's only sins are basically being a Victim(this is specifically to break her heart)(as though we haven't seem every execution report this one shed likely seen multiple similar stories in the batch and this being the last one basically breaks her momentarily as adam looks over (with borderline R*pey intent (Screen darkens and charlie feels shaken back and puts herself back to happy as we get the actual meeting from the show and after charlie gets pushed out we get a song of her basically crying as shes walking home as shes was essentially just forced to become intimately familiar with 16% of the Populations lives and Deaths Including things like a person who was in hell for the sin of Suicide to Escape An Abusive parent(throughout the song we see lines from various contracts show up in relation to the pain shes feeling ) as she gets to the hotel doors crying before picking her self up with a sort of even if its impossible that doesn't mean i shouldn't Try, type vibe as we get the same end of episode resolution with the ship looking at ths body but we dont see Adam instead we here his voice and only the line about making sure they cant do this again as Voxs logo Hyjacks the screen in heaven and we cut back to hell as the angel ship crashes (setup for angelic security debloped using real angel Technology(along with a reinforcing the idea they can fight the angels as he just took control of their tech and Embeded a piece of himself in it since they brought it into Hell and his range of Influence) as the episode ends.
Episode 4 is just the actual episode 2 as we've now properly established the base state of things and can get up to speed except we see vox tinkering with the angelic tech during the song with alastor, and at the end of the episode we see a hand reach out and take the severed angels head.
Episode 5 formerly 3 is also mostly the same but the trust theme is also applied to charlie building up her revealing everything that happened in the meeting in episode 3 to the hotels guests
Episode 6 formerly 4 is basically the Same
i tried to add things rarther then remove things to make it better additively instead of subtracting things

No I can't blame them I just really wish the pilot was made an episode 0 or 1 and the actual Episode 1 was split into 2 episodes beyond that i think everything was done exceptionally well (I just know someone from more general audiences is going to get recommended the show and then get lost in episode 1 from not having seen the pilot it's a statistical certainty
(I specifically wanted them to spend more time on the meeting for example what if Charlie had to sign paperwork like for every sinner executed a death report must be signed post mortem telling Charlie a brief version life story (considering demons and angels exist and have power it seems like a system that could be automatically set up) along with the exact sins that damned their souls to hell but every report needs multiple signatures from Lucifer or his daughter to formally "Forgive" the sins of the Sinners who Died and to also Pardon the sinners of any form of Sinful Guilt for Committing murder (this basically Reveals just what Broke her father's will to be a dreamer) along with this we can even have a song as she's singing them going through a mental whirlwind between the sinners who's only sin was something like being Graped (which as per the text of the Bible and Commonly accepted religious traditions makes you a sinner) and those who's sins are killing, Abusing and Graping others, to really motivate her to save the Sinners who are good along with emotionally damaging her because she has to realise just how many people died in a single years execution how many more people who are ostensibly innocent have been killed

They definitely should have told a smaller story if they only had so few episodes to work with. Probably stick with Angel being redeemed and Charlie realizing how hard it is to help reform a single person, let alone all of Hell. Maybe keep the plot thread of Sir Pentious being a spy as a way to undermine the Hotel from the inside in the hopes of becoming a new Overlord.
Then in season 2 you introduce Alastor and Adam to really shake things up when Heaven and Hell realize that Charlie's hotel isn't just a joke.

This goes for both Hazbin Hotel and its spin-off Helluva boss, which has had this issue for a while, there needs to *actual* evil in hell, but there’s almost none. Just what Vivziepop *Thinks* is evil, i.e. the bare minimum.
There should be hints of the 7 Sins and demons doing evil or punishing sinners; like Ozzie or Ozmodius lord of lust being a (former) serial rapist, Bee or Beelzebub, sin of gluttony and lord of flies himself, literally eating anything including souls and flesh, who ever Envy will believe by spiteful and sadistic towards others, Stolas in Helluva causing literal wars and atrocities on Earth so he can have more souls to “play” with, and Lucifer himself being a psychotic puppet master even seeing hell and it’s denizens as be giant tv show for his amusement (hence why he is neglecting Charlie who is a good person).

Yeah demons and fallen angels are supposed to be evil. This is why it dose not make sense for Charlotte to be good at all.. And even if that is ignored e her redemption dream is doomed to fail. Because for other demons Good is dumb. And that story Charlie read at the beginning of the episode could be a lie Lucifer told Charlie so she won't learn he actually was gone Riddick and want to be a God above Gods the creator and how he tried and failed horribly to overthrow him cause then Charlie will keep siding with heaven.

@@mysterythekitsune2988 People when someone was born in hell :0 and has dreams that differ from each distinct character that fell in hell due to their sins.
It's almost like demons and fallen agels had sinned before? oh wow, yeah, going to hell. Charlie is just a sheltered princess with unrealistic dreams who probably idealized the other side like any person does. it's not that hard to see. So charlie makes sense. And for demons "good is dumb" critical thinking aint your strong suit. What about sinners? yk, the ones who sinned and fell to hell from earth? are we just going to forget they were once human with their own problems with sme probably thinking they don't deserve to be there? especially new sinners, which are most likely to be the ones looking for redemption. Especially the ones afraid of death due to the "cleansing" that happens every once in a while.

You want actual evil? make your own show. Can they even add that? You're all spouting your own ideas as if the creator didn't have her own which was seperate from yours. How you see how the show should have been.
Just because your idea wasn't in the show doesn't mean it's not good. It's embarrassing. It's supposed to be a comedy that deals with heavy subjects surrounding the problems within ones self. A cartoon? Hell is a punishment for sinners so I could understand wanting to see them getting punished but I think it's REALLY obvious we ain't going off the bible or punishment thing. And I don't think you asked vivzie pop what she thinks is evil, you just compared what you saw as evil and got mad it wasn't in the show. that is weird.
Like seriously, whenever you see the 7 sins in like cartoons, animes, anything not realistic do they do that or did you only notice it for this show? because i've sure noticed that in multiple.
Whenever h3ll is portrayed(even in some realistic comedy tv series) they don't do that? why? because they had their own idea for how it could go and the setting just happens to be in hell.
Basically this comment is "this show isn't evil/emo enough and doesn't have enough darkness even thought it's just a silly comedy which focuses on the thought of redemption, self improvement, hard ships one goes through during their daily lives, etc. I want it to focus on this instead". If you can't tell already, this isn't really ABOUT HELL. It's about the CHARACTERS THEMSELVES and the added spice of "oh lets earn redemption.". The things you listed down isn't an issue. It's just you having an idea that could "spice up" the show and it's lore.

Normally I'm not big fan of shows (That are not specifically about music) that feel the need to put add least 1 song in every episode without a good excuse.
It can be distracting and can sometimes feels like a desperate attempt to make a show more memorable.
I do like some of the songs in the show, but I just wish the songs can be reserved for when it's nessessary for a character to sing rather then have a character sing whenever the writers want them to.
I also find it annoying that shows like HH make it seem like a large portion of the characters are talented singers with no explanation.

The problem with the episodes is that they aren't as long as the pilot was. With the pilot, it was a full-length feature where we had plenty of time to get to know the characters and their motives in just a couple minutes. Where in the new episodes we only had the episodes for about 24 minutes, so they had to crunch as much information as they could.

  • @Pheo_

I just finished the season in one take, and the first half up until Angel's working scene was incredibly boring to me. Or, maybe boring is the wrong word to use, but I couldn't really focus on it properly. It just felt like a whole lot of nothingness and useless information being thrown at me. I loved the pilot, loved the comics released, music video(s) and some of the inspired fan-projects (especially PARANOiD DJ's stuff) and while I know the latter isn't canon, it still shaped the characters a bit in my mind. Val's first introduction made him seem like a whiny, jealous b- when it came to Angel, not a smug, cunning character with lots of actual power and influence like he's portrayed as in Addicted. And he doesn't even have any lines there! Not to mention how Vox seems to be more in control than Val, which is a complete 180 to how I perceived their relationship. I've always gotten the impression that Val was manipulating enough to own at least Vox, despite him also being an overlord with power of his own.
Angel's working scene is when things finally started to fall into pieces (for me), as if the dust of the busy introductions had settled and the actual actions of the show started to line up properly. That was also the Valentino I was expecting to see; somewhat calculated, abuse of power, upset without being whiny but rather resorting to physical control and aggression and just evil.
I already forgot when Lucifer was introduced, ep. 5? I was really disappointed with how he was portrayed as well, he gave me such a bad first impression. Funnily, same as with Val, he came across incredibly insecure, whiny and desperate to me, even a bit useless and pathetic. Which would probably have been fine for another character, but it's LUCIFER. I expected him to be much more calm and, I guess, dark? while still caring about his own, but he just seemed silly for the sake of being silly. Cheap comedic effect that fell short.
Honestly the main cast (Angel, Husk, Alastor, Charlie and Vaggie despite what you stated in the video)+Serpentious seems like the only developed characters to me. Not counting Nifty on purpose.
While the first half was super disappointing for me, the second half did make up for some of it and just felt more well-rounded and actually thought through and I did enjoy it as a whole. I'm cautiously optimistic for s2.
Also this is just how I interpret it.

    • @nienel

Exactly how I feel with Val. Every character that was portrayed as cunning, dark and sinister is flipped to be the exact same as them all: goofy, wacky, silly. It's demeaning. I'd rather have the character with two minutes of screen time as an actual interesting character and not twenty minutes of yet another Blitzø knockoff.

I have been really loving the show, but all the issues about it are all centred around the pacing. If the episodes were longer and we had more character building, it would be the perfect show. The songs are amazing, the characters are great, but it’s just been too fast. If we just gave the characters more screen time that just gives us a look into how they are, it would be so much better. I don’t blame them for making the show fast paced if they are worried about not being renewed for Season 2, I mean, the community has been waiting like, a decade for the show and not being able to make a second season would be absolutely devastating to both the community and the producers. I think they are just trying to ensure that they get a lot out for the community in the hopes that the worst won’t happen. I think it’s just been a rough start, and that if we get a Season 2, it will have none of the issues it has now.
