    There is a difference here:
    Pouring hot water over espresso will give you an "Americano".
    Pouring espresso over hot water will give you a "Long Black".
    Adding water to espresso, in either way, will result in a richer coffee taste - a lungo will have a more watery taste.
    The name "Americano" is said to origin from World War II, when american G.Is in Italy would dilute their coffee with hot water to make it more like the coffee they were used to back home.

    If you like a strong but not bitter taste, I have found I have to use 2 capsules 2x40ml and then 120ml of water so 1:1.5 ratio, that's with a Kazaar capsule but thats dependant on your preference

    Great video! I just purchased a nespresso machine. I love drinking an americano and wasn't exactly sure how to make it. I was making a lungo and then, without emptying the capsule, hitting the lungo button a second time. Now that I know, I'll try it like your video. Thank you!

    Or you can make it even more simpler and brew a lungo to the max 6 FL ounces that the nespresso machine makes and you have an americano that way too

    @thebarak Před 12 lety +18

    A lungo is not a double-shot. It is one shot with extra water through the puck/capsule. Two espresso shots, using two capsules, into one cup, is a double-shot.

    • @luvpamelanewton
      @luvpamelanewton Před 6 lety

      thebarak Lungo allows you to get more espresso out of the one pod using it all up vs wasting it on a tiny shot with small water.

      @jjarry Před 6 lety +1

      You can't get more out of them pods. When you pull a shot with lungo or espresso button. Hold the button the coffee start going brown. Then turn yellowish Let it go when you start see it go yellowish. That is the end of the pod. All coffee has been removed. So all your doing just burning the old coffee. When over extract it.

    Personally I prefer an Americano made where an espresso is added on top of hot water (which, incidentally, is what most of the coffee shops in the UK do with the exception of Starbucks) as the Long Black (Espresso first) tends to end up with the creme broken up.

      You probably do not know what an Americano and a Long Black are. Americano is Espresso with water added over it after it is prepared. Long Black is water with Espresso poured over it.

  • @jmarshall7595
    @jmarshall7595 Před 4 lety +1

    A lungo is 3.75 oz. A single espressos 1.35 oz. adding a single shot of water about doubles the volume (~2.7 oz).

    • @tripas421
      @tripas421 Před 3 lety

      This makes more sense in comparing both methods. Thank you.
      So ultimately, the Lungo has less strenght when compared to making a single espresso and adding another shot of water to make an Americano??
      So an Americano is stronger than a Lungo, right?

    for cafe americano, instead of 1 shot of espresso and 2 shots of water, i put the grand cru capsule in and do the lungo pour (dbl espresso)...then i retrieve and reuse the spent capsule and do lungo pour again. this way i get a little more coffee vs straight water on the second round.

    • @bazahaza
      @bazahaza Před 8 lety +3

      You should only use the capsule once. Reusing it will draw out only bitterness from the coffee. An Americano is a single shot of espresso with hot water added afterwards.

    Lungo isn’t a double shot of espresso. The ratio of coffee:water is different in an espresso shot and Lungo.

    Hi, I already returned one new U machine because excessive water was going into the drip tray. The new one is a bit better, but not that much. If you brew a Lungo, how many ounces should be in your coffee cup once it is done? It says 3.75 oz on the box, but I don;t think I am getting that, I think more like 3. what should you get in "real life"? Thanks!

    I think that’s the wrong way to do it. Just leave the pod in and hold the right button until the machine stops. That way you don’t waste whatever is left in the pod.

    • @WirlWind494
      @WirlWind494 Před 9 lety +3

      The difference is a Lungo is stronger (Not two shots, was corrected. But uses more of the coffee from the capsule), Americano is only a single shot into hot water.
      It's basically "Strong vs Weaker" thing. Given that a Lungo uses more of the cap, I would also assume that it a little more bitter as well.

    full of mistakes ... lungo is simply a small americano ... and neither of the choices gives you double shot ... BIG FAIL for a PRO... since i am just a regular coffee lover

  • @DavidBoyes
    @DavidBoyes Před 7 lety +1

    How utterly confusing. Are both these coffees lungo or not? In other words, is one a lungo and the other a non-lungo? Or are both lungo? This is not made clear but confused by the introduction of the term "grand cru". This is one of my main gripes with the Nespresso system - terminology, clarity and explanation. The term "grand cru" just confuses the issue, as it is not explanatory - it merely attempts to imbue quality and heritage where it is not required. So, tell us all: large or small? Keep it simple please.

    • @jacobhuggins
      @jacobhuggins Před 7 lety +1

      To what I understand a Lungo is double the amount of a shot. When he did the Americano it is the same amount as a Lungo since he ran the amount of a shot twice, but one of those two times with water alone.

    • @luvpamelanewton
      @luvpamelanewton Před 6 lety

      He used the same type of pods in his example for each demonstration and called them grand cruz. However, Nespresso makes a lungo type of pod made for the double size shot and they make a espresso type of pod for a single size shot. Despite the lungo and espresso type of pods, either works with the double shot or single shot that is dispensed.
