civil partnership is just cohabitation so it's common law just because you reside together and share marital duties but you are not legally bound in a marriage. a marriage is legal and filed through the court. so when separating you have more rights as a spouse and division of property vs common law you don't have as many rights

Before hiring a family lawyer it is important to know:
-Collaborative or not (chances are if you are a male who has been dumped, the opposing lawyer will not be collaborative and will be super-aggressive)
    - Are you a male or a female? Your chances of fairness is almost completely based on your sex. If you are a male, be prepared to be treated like a criminal.
    - Do you want to give thousands of dollars to a lawyer who pretends to be your friend, or minimize the cost and save the money for your kids? In many cases, what is gained is often overshadowed by the financial losses incurred by unregulated, gouging charges.
    - if you are a male, and even if you make less than your wife, alway, alway, always get the children half the time at least. Due to the discrepancy in salary, she will have to pay you child support, you will be entitled to government subsidies and you can use the funds for child care after school or when necessary. She will also have to pay regular “section 7” expenses which will help with their clothing and entertainment. DO NOT allow less than 50/50 parenting, if you do, there is a very good chance your children will become alienated from you as you will be replaced by another man. Women are much more “successful” at “finding” men to help support them in both emotional and financial ways, which encourages further alienation of the original father.
    - DO NOT feel like you should not ask for spousal support. Getting dumped because she is more successful than you? Okay, but there are laws about this and you are entitled to it.
    - DO NOT assume you will get fair treatment from mediators or even your lawyer. Your lawyer works for you, be careful of they focus on and hold them accountable for their billing.
-DO NOT be afraid of firing your lawyer, there are many lawyers out there who will love to take your money.
    - If you can, represent yourself. In many cases, lawyers fill out a form and then charge you hundreds of dollars for it. Take the time and energy to save yourself thousands of dollars that lawyers make on simple forms that people are not familiar with. The more work you do, the less the lawyer can bill you for.
    - Never discuss schedules with your children, this is a sure way to make you the scapegoat when the mom makes plans for the kids on your time, and tells the children to inform you because she is to cowardly to do it herself, or simply wants to start arguments in your house.
    - Even if the children criticize their mom (and or other parent such as replacement father), do not agree or continue the conversation. Let them know you are sorry they feel that way and that they have the benefit of spending time with you which should be kept positive, calm and attentive, Do not show anger at the way your child complains about the other parent. Be aware, they are doing the same to you at their moms place and she will use it against you if possible.
-Take care of yourself. Sure, maybe you want to die everyday because you miss your kids, but at least, they’re “ok”, even if your not. Who is going to help you? Just you. Men suck at taking care of themselves because they are taught not to complain since birth and that death is better (more honourable) than showing emotion.
Remember, we do not live in a healthy society, do not expect society to respect you and treat you fairly.
Just be the best person you can be so that you know inside you live with integrity.

So know how law works then you won't have to really hire a lawyer or pay to much for one? Ya let's all do that I mean 3+ years of law rounds out to about a month worth of Google searches, I think one thing you should look for when getting a family lawyer is looking for a male so that way you have someone understanding your position a bit better
