I first saw & heard Jonathan perform this on NYTimes Video and was absolutely blown away. Sensitive, intelligent and emotionally done. Bravo Mr. Groff!! I wish there were more performers like you.

85% of you guys have no clue how pleasantly jarring this still is, to someone who is gay, raised in a smallish town and 60 years old. Anyone on the planet can sing any lyric without any regard to how it frames the dynamic of romance and gender and nobody cares, and no body wonders if there is some gay 'statement' behind it, because those statements are pretty much dated and silly by about 20 years. Yet I am still a hint taken, when a young man stands on a stage and sings so unflinchingly and brazenly about another boy, expecting absolutely no reaction from the audience that he is. This stuff is all over an internet, all over every media, and it is wonderful . You cannot imagine what it was like when I was 17 and there was NOTHING in any direction, wherever one looked, that suggested a person might possibly feel anything like romance, or crush, or first love, toward someone of the same gender. There was porn in a magazine hidden in a basement, and there was empty silence and there was condemnation.

Same generation, same disbelief at how much things have changed, and same grief over how much we suffered.

@@danielsiegel1046 Its astonishing isn't it. there are men marrying other men, and viable Presidential candidates are among those men. I recall feeling self satisfied that states were considering 'civil union' legislation. A few years later, I saw those same bills as a form of separate but not quite equal. Yet some kids are still dying, bullied and tortured into suicide. Somehow we still have not taught sufficient courage in enough of our youth to stand up and be counted when it matters to be counted, to be kind, to be decent and include so we still will grieve.

So glad that you've finally gotten to see the tide of acceptance turn. We've grown a lot in the past few decades but we still have a long way to go.

What a contrast between this and the original as sung by Ethel Merman! Totally different meaning and sensibility.

I Got Lost in His Arms
(Original Broadway Cast of Annie Get Your Gun)
Don't ask me just how it happened
    I wish I knew
    I can't believe that it's happened
    And still it's true
I got lost in his arms, and I had to stay
It was dark in his arms, and I lost my way
From the dark came a voice, and it seemed to say
"There you go, there you go"
How I felt, as I fell, I just can't recall
But his arms held me fast and it broke the fall
And I said to my heart as it foolishly
    Kept jumping all around
    I got lost
    But look what I found
    There you go
    There you go
How I felt, as I fell, I just can't recall
But his arms held me fast and it broke the fall
And I said to my heart as it foolishly
    Kept jumping all around
    I got lost
    But look what I found
