Same way happens in U. K. When I was managing a bridge and landscape project in Hong Kong, exactly 50 years ago, I get to know an English gentleman, who becomes my friend at later days. He was at that time working for Hong Kong government, and stationed on site as the project inspector. He told me that in England, laborers wait on a specific location, early in the morning, wait for construction foreman to select labourers to work for the day. The labourers, even have to bring their own shovels. And the foreman would choose to the strongest men, with biggest shovels.
We do have that in england, the exact same thing. You turn up in the morning and if anyone wants you to work in construction etc they pick you up, I live in hull and we have the same thing outside a job agency.

About 30 yrs ago, When i was young we have that in the California, early in morning you would hang out at different spot, usually in front of a coffee & donut shop's parking lot, a guy comes by with a truck and ask if anyone have certain skills (painter, gardener, farmer ect,)if not then they choose big guys for heavy labor, most of the people there have no cars, so they pick you up and drop you off at different places and when the day is done take you back, and they get a % of your salery that day, pretty sure they charge a fee from the clients too. And if you don't get pick up you go home and show up again the next day.
you definitely have it in England. Go to Barking in London and opposite to Barking Tesco you will see many people waiting for someone to pick them up for jobs.

There are similar scenes in the UK, in the parking lots of big chain building supplies stores there will be crowds of people who will work for cash on a site. Though the big sites are so controlled by H&S that the work is usually with independent builders.
There is one thing i noticed before about indian people and that is that they like camera, when they see one they all come to be recorded. But what i did not know,and what impresses me is how most of them are always smiling and are in a good mood even though they have difficult life.

This same thing happens a lot in California too. There's a street called Cesar Chavez (close to the intersection with Mission St) in San Francisco with workers lined up on the side of the street waiting for work every day, if anyone wants to do the USA version of this video.
In Los Angeles, California we have the same job market for people with no skills or someone that wants to work just for a day or two. They wait for buses to come and pick them up to bring them to the site of work.

This same thing happens a lot in California too. There's a street called Cesar Chavez (close to the intersection with Mission St) in San Francisco with workers lined up on the side of the street waiting for work every day, if anyone wants to do the USA version of this video.
