We thought it was best to invest a little more money and buy a wood chipper that was heavy duty and would last us a good long time. Especially since we are doing a lot of forest management on our 30 acres of land!

Im a landscaper and my customers with 4 acres bought this machine but im the one who gets to run it and maintain it. The machine has worked great. Ive ran it for probably about 30 hours or so and shredded a whole lot of brush. When putting short thick sticks into this machine they can bounce right out the opening. Ive had a couple hit me in the face and i was ok but it didnt feel great. Be careful.. a face shield is not a bad idea if you are putting shorter pieces in there that might jump out like a bouncing betty. When i put shorter thick pieces in the machine that are 3-4 inches and only a foot or two long I put longer brush in behind them to compact everything so the pieces wont have room to jump around in the shoot. Hope these tips help. Im doing full synth oil changes at around 20 hours of use and blowing the air filter out. Greasing the main axle bearing will be coming up in another 10-15 hours of run time. Machines also fairly hard to jam and very easy to unjam.

Subbed! Just got the 4 wheel electric start version. Thing is 594 pounds assembled. Got it all together solo and filled with proper oil. It wouldn't start. Troubleshooting page wasn't helpful in this case. So....then I remembered it had an emergency kill switch button on the big chute. Duh! Lol. That was it. Fired right up. Going to run it for awhile to break in the engine then change the engine oil. One thing I should mention for your machine with the 440 engine is it has a gearbox with oil in it that also needs to be changed. Think it is every 50 hours of run time. There isn't a engine hour meter so I am installing one. So far I am liking this machine a lot. Oh, one more thing for those interested in this is to get hold of the correct hitch ball. 2 inch ball. If you intend to pull it with a mower or ATV most hitches are 5/8th inch shank size. 2 inch ball with 5/8th shank are like the Unicorn so order early. Finally found it at Home Depot. You could drill out the hitch to 3/4 inch but not me. This machine is powerful and can do a lot. Thanks for a great video!
Thanks for the info. There was nothing in the owners manual about a gearbox on my model. It looks to be all belt driven. But I will pull the covers off and check it. Thanks again for watching and subscribing.
@ 1:34...you mighg typically use a socket from a socket set to tap that in "square". Am impressed with with thd devotion to the/a wood chipper. Truly opens a lot of doors considering you can drop, limb and chip on the spot. No piling brush and burning it. Great videos! Thanks.

We’ve spent every night for a week searching online for a chipper shredder. We realized we needed a dedicated chipper. It came down to a Jansen or the WoodMaxx. WoodMaxx won out. Its made in USA and the clips to open it up to unclog anything sealed the deal. (And a veteran designed & built the company!)

Were also adding to our instructions to install the FEED CHUTE after the axle and wheels are assembled. This will allow you to tip the unit back to install the front tow bar system, although I thought your lift system was an awesome idea.

I almost decided on a Woodmaxx DC- 1260 . But I watched this video earlier today.. I still like the looks of the Woodmaxx. But, comparing the two I felt your chipper was the better deal. So even without watching his second video I had to go to Home Depot and order one. I think it's going to be a perfect companion to my Vermeer 935.
Update: I assembled mine a little different. The first thing I did was tap the bearings in the wheels. A tip from watching this video. Then I installed the tires on the axle. I then laid the chipper on its back. I installed the axle then the front stand then the tongue. The tongue gave me the leverage to upright the chipper and allow it to sit on the stand. Then I installed the chutes. It was pretty easy to do by myself.
And yet another video demonstrating how great wood chippers are at taking on 3/4” diameter limbs...very impressive!!!

The wheel bearings not being recessed properly must be a fairly common problem. After trying to assemble my wheels for an hour I figured something was wrong and found your video. A few taps on the bearings with a wood block and it went together fine. Looking forward to trying the chipper out soon. Thanks for the video!

How much
Keep an eye on the bolts holding the chipper shaft bearing in place. The ends of the bolts "do not" extend far enough through the NASA nuts for them to hold well. The bolts should be at least 1/4" to 3/8" longer that what is on it now. Interesting to see all the debris on the air cooling intake.

It’s a little heavy but the wife can move it
I like to run mine at low-medium rpm to warm it up before going to full throttle.
Nice chipper, a piece of advice, always put the large end in first or butt ends first.

I noticed at the 4:00 minute mark that your cutting blades are upside down. In other words- when your introducing wood to chip- it hits the bevel before the cutting edge. That explains why you had to push the larger wood in and it wasn’t self feeding.
Interesting thought. There was nothing about that in the directions and the blades came installed already.
You are certainly wrong. If that blade were flipped over it would seriously damage the machine!
Thanks for the informative video. First a question, then a comment; does the machine come with oil and if not, how much do I need to have on hand. Now the comment. I am glad I saw this video since I just ordered the same thing and am expecting it next week. You made me see what I need to do and not do to operate safely and for my home use I think this chipper will be just right. I suspect some of the negative comments are from contractors who realize this machine really isn't "commercial" grade and shouldn't be advertised as such. I do believe it's a very heavy duty residential use machine that is somewhat expensive but will last many years under this type of use. I fear those smaller, cheaper chippers won't do a good job and fail before long. Like you I am going to limit the size of wood I chip and burn most anything over 3 inches, or so.
The machine does not come with the oil. You will need to get a quart of 30 weight. The machine is definitely not a true commercial machine and youre right, it is a super duty residential machine. It will last a long time and I have no regrets buying it. My neighbor just bought one just like it too and he uses it every day.
So I bought the similar version with the 9.5hp engine since I don't have so much land. But love it, so sturdy and heavy-duty and with the chute and blower so easy to remove to and store, simply a smart purchase.
Wanted to ask if you have ever had the blade drum jam? I think it's inevitable eventually over use, but what size tool and leverage are you using to rotate drum? Thank you kindly
We have definitely had the blade jam. We haven't had any major jams and were able to simply remove what had jammed after turning off the machine. But if we were to have a larger jam I would just use a 2x4 as a lever to rotate the drum instead of a metal tool so as to protect the blade.
Judging from my almost 30 years of tree work , I like ythjiet 3 thatt little chipper. Kohler is good ,drum chipping is )probbably the best but discs are good too. It looks good too symmetrical and low. Bit of sharpening tip? Find a little dremmel tool or even a ceramic chainsaw sharpening tool or a tiny little diamond bit )and with the smallest bit . , when you notice a small nick ,you can feel it with your thumb nail. Just polish those tiny nicks to a razor like edge . The blade wont be perfectly straight after honing a nick but it is tot a problem. A sharp blade with little ripples in along the edge chops chips just fine. And when a blade is sharp it stays sharp longer . When a blade starts to dull a little, the tiny rounded edge rounds off faster . So my point is that you dont have to take the blade to someone and have it ground down to the lowest tick. Nick. And if by chance a chunk gets knocked out you can still carve the edge of the chunk to a sharp cutting edge with the dremmell. r .
Appreciate that very much. We recently sharpened and flipped the blade ourselves and it did make a huge difference. I tried two methods to sharpen and it worked out good I think. Diy if u can ,im with you on that. Keep in mind the blade is s chisel and chisels shouldn't be sharpened on their back side. The back side of a chisel is a plane and if you sharpen it you shorten the plane. Like scissors the inside edges are perfect flat that way they can shear against each other. If you sharpen the back side of scissors you create a gap instead of shearing edges . A gap will not cut paper ,material) will wedge in the scissors. A chisel edge is what you are working with in a wood chipper blade . So as time goes on and you continue to sharpen your chipper blades, if the blades are out you should first clean the back surface polished finish like the top of an engine block , dont take any steel off of the cutting edge. , only polish the back side to a mirror if you have the tools. Then you will see the rounding off of the edge. The factory angle is not important to maintain .all you want is a chisel angle . You can modify the angle along the edge depending on the depth of the nicks . You want to take the metal all the way to the mirror finish of the back of the blade . ,with your modified angle. At least less than 90 degrees. Factory might be 45degrees. 90 degree will cut but that is just an example of finding your angle. The rounded edge that meets the mirror finish of the back side of the blade meets the flat plane at a obtuse angle like 20 degrees . It is round actually there is no angle at all it is a sled that slams into the wood and causes friction and heat which fatigues and dis tepmpers the metal at the edge and distorts the metal faster. A chisel cuts the wood and stays cold thus keeping its edge longer.

Keep the air vents on the flywheel cowl clear of leaves. An air cooled machine runs hotter than water cooled engines and they can overheat very quickly which could wreck the engine.

In respect to safety. The ignition switch could be a problem. Take an emergency you need to kill the engine and the key has dropped out or broken off. It should be an emergency smack button and the key switch put next to the engine.

Thanks. We have both sharpened and replaced blades. The steels very hard to sharpen and our local guy wouldn’t do it. I did ok sharpening myself. When I bought replacements I want to say it was about 40 bucks but honestly can’t remember exactly. It might be better to warm up and break in the engine maybe for about 5-10 minutes because of the life span and better power. Just for advice. Otherwise great review :)

I would be aiming that shoot down more at the ground so you're not feeling the whole air area up with the flying wood chips I guess at the cost on that myself it's a nice machine but I'd say 1500 nice to see that it has a tongue jack on it too boy was I off on the price wow around 3,400 at Home Depot

I would look in the future a few up grades 1 I would lengthen the trailer tongue so you could have someone on the arc while the other chipping to keep flying wood away from the driver on your I faced it to the woods and CHIP AWAY
Dropping a LIKE on your video - Watching and Supporting! We picked up two DR products, one was a Wood Chipper... it never worked right for us, so we returned it. Our Rotary Mower blade chops everything up very well, and things I can drag or cut and bring (in the Polar Cart) over to the burn pile makes things vanish quickly... we had been hoping that the wood chipper worked to much stuff up so we could fill in a hole we have on the property... but that did not happen. I have a DR yard vac. When I got it it was the middle size of the three they sold. I've had it for a few years and still like it. I decided against the DR pro 400 I was looking at and got this one. I think I'll be happier with it.

casper503ify check the owners manual. I used 10w-30 but it depends on the temperature/climate where you are. It’s on page 7 of our Koehler engine manual that came with it. Hope that helps!

It was a few years ago but I think they cost about $50 for two of them. They’ve lasted because I swap and sharpen as needed. I looked them up and it looks like they’re about $60 now

Is it easy to pull with a UTV on rough terrain? I wonder if the wheels can roll on rough trails and shallow creeks.
We pull it with our atv on trails. Goes over rocks and stuff, not sure how rough you mean

Ever plugged it up? I've got a dish type that works very well on everything but the fine branches, especially if they're at all green. Maybe airflow is an issue on mine.
Never had any problem. Not sure what you mean by dish type. Ours is great. Doesn’t jam. The only time we’ve even jammed ours was our fault for shutting it off while a chunk was still bouncing around in it.

What about dried wood from Pine, Aspen, Spruce that has either been burned, standing dead, or downed trees? That's what I have at our property. Fire burned through there 5 years ago and we have tons of slash from cutting up a ton of trees. Looking for something that will chip up that stuff instead of constantly dragging it to our burn pit to burn, we are in Colorado.
Sorry to hear that. Not sure about burned wood but we’ve put dead wood through. It chips it. If it’s bigger than 2-3 inches it does green wood best, but pine is a soft wood already so probably ok. Spruce is soft I think too but not sure about aspen.

At my Home Depot this is $2,700 bummer. I would probably do $1900 for it. Don't know if I can justify almost an extra $1000 when I can get a 3-4" chipper for $1000 total at northern tool.

Leaves no problem. It shreds them up pretty good. No clue on the nuts though, never put any through

That was a pain in the neck, wife and I pushed it! We keep it in the shelterlogic now.

I’m not sure what you mean by capacity but I fed it for 4 hours straight on a tank of gas.

Good tool! I'm looking for a wood chipper and found your video via google search :) Please let me know if it's a good chipper after 3 years of use, enough power? Any issues, or problems? Is it work for a 6-inch branch?
Still using it with no problems! Great investment for us. We don’t generally put larger wood through it though. Basically anything bigger than about an inch or so gets burned so we use it mostly for small stuff. Got extra blades so I can rotate them out for sharpening

Still running great! Just uploaded a new video because we flipped and sharpened the blades.
How has it held up after one year?
It has held up great. I do need to turn the blade around but that is because I have dulled it a bit with so much use. Still very happy

It was 2000 when we bought it about 2 years ago.
Watch the nuts on that bearing block, those bolts are not long enough to engage the nylon inserts.

Yes. Held up great as of the end of last season. Have not had a chance to use it this year but looking forward to it. We will post an update when we get a chance to do some work with it again.
Creating A Simpler Life I live in the southern Adirondacks, just dropped a 90’ maple so this will be a huge help, plus I have about 6 acres so trying to not rent a machine as I will have a constant need for one, so thanks for the video and the response it’s much appreciated

We are editing a video right now where we tow it on our ATV trails to clear all the crap that fell this past winter. Did you ever end up getting a chipper?

We paid 2,000 so absolutely! Not sure what it’s going for now but it was definitely worth what we paid!

I hope you have been fully trained and licenced to use one of theese because in the 🇬🇧 you can’t use a wood chipper if you havnt been fully trained or licensed
Not here in the USA. Sorry you have so many rules there. Curious if you need training and a license to operate a chainsaw as well? That would really put a dent in our ability to maintain our own land. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

It depends on what you’re putting in it but it’s really more of a chipper than a shredder for us.
