Having lived in Spain and visited Portugal and firstly long ago.. and very often since, I have also spent a lot of time in colonized countries, Mexico, central and South America .. and now Brazil. For me, on my first day ever in Brazil, this magnificent exhibition absolutely took my breath away. Adriana Varejão has explored the overlay of Baroque art and architecture ( and more subtly the religion that came with it)on the indigenous peoples and African peoples of Brasil… the human cost, the wounded flesh, the weighing down, the death and life, the fissures and sutures…and the ruins… and has done so poetically, and in such a way that I was quite speechless for hours afterwards. This exhibition is absolutely brilliant, and the curators of the Pinacoteca have cleverly linked her work with that of others, calling us to question..’um país inventado’, ‘quem somos nós, brasileiros?’themes of violence and resistance, suppression of indigenous languages, bringing to life indigenous languages.. in the work of Carmela Gross, 2014.Tupi, for example. Parabéns Adriana and Pinacoteca… you open our minds and hearts. Paula Renouf, Aotearoa,NZ
