    Awesome video and you confirmed my choices. Whew! I just installed a DS1522+ at home and couldn’t be happier. I added the 10GbE module since I edit. For the video business I have about 18 DS1821+ units. I upgrade RAM to 32GB and put in dual 10GbE NIC. We cut massive 16 multi camera shows with this config and it works perfect. I’ve had this work with up to 8 editors working at the same time.

    Still rocking my DS-918+ with 32GB of RAM. It kills me that Synology went to one soldered on memory module in this form factor. That is probably my biggest obstacle for not conveniently upgrading, well that and upgrading and moving nearly 24TB of content will not be cheap, easy and efficient.

    Just be careful with this recommendation, if you intend to make ANY memory upgrades. The DS723+ and DS923+ with ANY Synology memory upgrades will cost you almost or MORE than the DS1522+ that comes with 8GB stock, So is always cheaper to go strait way to this model. If you go the route of not using Synology memory just be aware that yours warrant is voided if the NAS dies.

  • @tgmct
    @tgmct Před 7 měsíci +6

    As far as I know, you can NOT upgrade a DS1821+ to become a DS1823xs+. The problem is that they have different CPU’s that run at significantly different speeds. Synology’s new policy of requiring only their drives to populate the xs machines has caused me to look for a different solution. I wanted to upgrade my DS1515+ with simple drive migration from the old machine to the new (the drives are only 1.5 years old - Ironwolf Pro). But Synology refuses to allow this anymore on xs machines. Synology has gone so far as to require sellers to ONLY sell DS1621xs+ machines fully populated. This is NOT the way to keep me recommending their products to my clients.

      This anti-consumerist behaviour is the one that's stopping me from getting the 1821+ as my first synology. Don't feel like being trapped in their ecosystem unnecessarily.

    • @praetorxyn
      @praetorxyn Před 7 měsíci +3

      That's because Synology is the Apple of NAS vendors. I have a DS918+ and it'll be the last Synology I buy.

    • @PatrickDKing
      @PatrickDKing Před 7 měsíci +2

      I just set up a DS1821+ a few weeks ago and so farm I'm happy. I got a new one for $850. I really wanted to get a Qnap but the fact that I have about 20 "old" hard drives already bought and paid for made the Synology my choice due to the hybrid raid. I figured I saved about $2k by not having to buy a bunch of new hard drives. My second NAS though shouldn't require hybrid raid but if the 1821+ goes on clearance then I'd probably pick another one up. I looked at truenas, unraid, and some other DIY raid systems and I could probably figure it out but I wanted something really simple for my first go around. My needs were pretty simple, I just wanted a consolidated pool for another backup of my data. Next NAS I'll probably want some major high end performance, then I'll look more at qnap.

    • @tgmct
      @tgmct Před 7 měsíci

      @PatrickDKing I wanted the xs machine so that I can run a reasonable amount of containers on the platform too. The other thing is that Synology will not allow those other hard drives to run at all. With Synology pushing me out the door; I'll go; but I only recommend stuff I know that works to my clients and others.

    So, am I wasting my time looking at the DS923+ for £470 GBP? I should be looking at the DS423+ model instead? Mainly PC/Laptop full system backups, video backups, photos and maybe the odd film or TV show now and again? My DS215J is EOL and needs to be replaced.

  • @DavidM2002
    @DavidM2002 Před 7 měsíci

    If you wanted to just muck about with VM's at home, but wanted a really good CPU and RAM to 32 Gb or more, what 4 bay would you suggest.

    • @praetorxyn
      @praetorxyn Před 7 měsíci +1

      I can't think of any 4 bay NAS from any brand with a CPU I'd classify as even "Good," much less really good.
      All the ones I know of come with one 4 GB DIMM installed and only have two memory slots, meaning two 16 GB DIMMs would need to be purchased, and I'm going to assume none of them will officially support 16 GB DIMMs on their officially supported lists.
      If you want to mess around with VMs, I'd advise just looking into what would be a good Proxmox appliance and using that for Proxmox.

    I don't know how your audience feels, but I am done with mechanical hard drives. They break, are noisy, slow. The added size is not worth it after you've set a few NASs and realize that in a RAID 5 setup, when you replace a drive, the system wears out a lot just setting itself up again one time. I want quiet, high endurance 2.5" SSDs or NVMes. I don't need speed, but I'm sick of delicate HDDs.
    All these systems seemed to be 3.5" drives, although I fast forwarded through much.

      the problem is, if you need a for amount storage space, 2.5" 8 TB SSDs (Samsung 870 QVO) are still quite expensive...; for 32 TB raw storage in SSDs you can get 100 TB of HDD storage...

    I've been mulling over a NAS for the couple of years now, mostly as a way to get my kids, my wife, and myself OFF of Apple's Cloud service. Is this possible? Is there a way to set up a NAS just so all the family can backup/store all their iPhone photos/video from anywhere in the world? I'm just a bit confused what's possible here, and believe me I've been monitoring and reading up on all this NAS stuff for like the last two years, as I said. Any suggestions?

    • @DavidM2002
      @DavidM2002 Před 7 měsíci

      I do pretty much exactly that. I have an iPhone app call Photosysc and have used it for several years now. Initially, I used it to upload photos and video to my OneDrive account and it worked great. Both my girlfriend and I would upload our daily travel photos in order to share with her family. More recently, on the app, I configured the SMB share ( this was not very intuitive on the app ). I use Tailscale VPN which is free and extremely simple to setup. When I'm out of the house, I turn on Tailscale and upload my photos and video. I also created a second SMB share on Photosync, which is very easy to do, for use in the home. Be sure to have your NAS's IP address either reserved in the router or set as static on the NAS. When I'm on my home network, I upload with that 2nd SMB setting. This may all sound a bit confusing but it is nearly flawless. And, to add to the fun and games, if you want to share with people outside your home, you can use Synology's CloudSync app and sync it to the Public folder in a service like OneDrive. Final note : I don't think you can backup anything else from an iPhone except perhaps your calendar to anything other than iCloud. Enough babbling. If you require any more details, feel free to reply here.

    • @IntoxicatedVortex
      @IntoxicatedVortex Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@praetorxyn I'm not sure why you'd go to the complication of installing something like NextCloud given Synology Photos has a photo backup feature that can upload photos to the NAS just fine. All you need for Synology Photos to work is either QuickConnect (and/or DDNS - which you can use free with a Synology NAS), point your modem's incoming traffic for DSM (specific port forwarding is better than using the general DMZ) to your NAS and you're off to the races. Why complicate matters?

    • @praetorxyn
      @praetorxyn Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@IntoxicatedVortex Because I don’t want to be locked into any vendor’s ecosystem and couldn’t give two shits about their first party apps, which without exception I find inferior to third party alternatives. My Docker setup is completely portable. If I build a DIY NAS and install UnRAID or TrueNAS Scale, all I have to do is copy my docker folder over, edit the environment variable file to change the volume path (as other systems likely won’t have storage under /volume1), and tell docker compose to create and start the containers, then ban, everything is working, with the only downtime being however long it takes me to tell my router to forward ports to a different IP.
      If I’m using first party apps and I go with a device not from that vendor, I have to migrate to a different app anyway. Synology doing hardware lock-in for some models tells me I made the right decision.
      This would then let me repurpose the Synology NAS to hold local backups of large files like my media collection and such, which is why I’m considering it.

      @@praetorxyn You have to remember, the OP has never owned a NAS before. I don't think the level of complexity that you are suggesting is appropriate for someone new to the game.

    • @PatrickDKing

      The simplest thing would be to just manually transfer over all the files from the phone/tablet/etc to a NAS. I do that about once a month to my PC and call each folder the transfer date. Then it's instantly backed up to my Onedrive so there's copy 2 in the cloud, then I attempt to sort them onto the NAS, so there's three copies, one in the cloud. Eventually I can delete any one of the copies and then still have two extra copies. It's not automatic but it's really not that hard or time consuming to do either.
