    I wish I could go back 8 years in the past to when I was sitting on rocks with my friend by the dark pacific ocean, listening to this song sharing earbuds, and drinking 40oz in silence... staring at black with waves crashing in the background.

    "My daughters eyes, they are two tiny seas; whose waters will rise, and then run down her checks. Father, where do you go, so far out upon the sea? When are you coming home, to me?" Hit me in the heart strings when I have to go to work. 💓

    The best thing about Dustin is that he can express the beauty of soft and hard music in the same way.

    I love how even when he messes up and repeats "so far out upon the sea" rather than say "it's farther than I can see" in the second chours it still flows so beautiful

    There's something about the way he sings the words "to me" at the end of the lines in the chorus that gives me chills every time I hear it

    What a beautiful song. Dustin's voice has gotten better and better with time. I love acoustic albums, personally Alice in Chains unplugged was one of my favorites. I wish they would bring that back, doing acoustic concerts like that on MTV. But of course they won't, they are now a game show network and not a music channel at all. Too bad. I would love to see Thrice, Highly Suspect and a few others play like this.

    the time signature of this song is so different. i think it alternates 10/8 and 11/8 like one after the other...but i cant really tell if theres a simpler way to put it. but man this song is so soothing :)

    I hear the intro as 5/4, then the verse is 11/8 to 10/8 alternating, then the chorus goes back to 5/4. Awesome though, it's almost missable.

    I'm not a part of Thrice, obviously, but it seems that Dustin originally wrote this on an acoustic guitar. If that's true, i'm even more in love with the record version. Think about the vision and creativity it takes to turn an acoustic song like this into the underwater lullaby that the original song is.

      The lyrics remind me, as a single father, of how hard it is to say goodbye to my daughter each time that she leaves to go to her mother's. Such a beautiful song that showcases Dustin's vocal prowess as well as his unbelievable lyrical content.

  • @soulinmypocket
    @soulinmypocket Před 11 lety +1

    no, he's right about the verses alternating between 11 and 10. the chorus section is definitely 5/4 though

  • @xBeefyisDeadx
    @xBeefyisDeadx Před 12 lety

    The original version can be counted either 5/4 or 10/8 for the whole song. This version has a couple of random measures of 11/8, which I think are just there because it's probably pretty difficult to strum, count, and sing this song all at the same time. Also, at the end of this video, for the sort of vocal outro thing, he switches to 3/4, I think that this is, again, because it's probs hard to count this song while singing. But the recording is all in 5. Also, no hemiola here.

    @thisiswilson2 I very much agree... that and the lyrics to songs like "The Sky Is Falling"... Listen to that... I reckon it might be something to do with the fact it's 2012, they're supersticious dudes, and i think they could be laying low with their fams this year, just in case...

      liquidSpin Look up the definition of "hiatus". Thrice never said they were breaking up, they said they were taking a break and going on hiatus. It is akin to being cyrogenically frozen and then being brought back to life in the future. You probably already know, but they're touring again and planning a new album for a 2016 release.
