EUROPEAN COMICS: Franco-Belgian comics

- This is an announcement for my new video series. The idea is to delve deeper into the terminology, history, writers, artists, characters of Franco-Belgian comics. Franco-Belgian comics are NOT the entirety of European comics - not even close. However it is very - if not the most - important factor of getting international recognition for European publications.
To keep the subject even remotely manageable I will focus more on time between WW2 and 1970´s.
I´m not a specialist on this subject - just enthusiast fan. This is my small contribution to spread the word and make European comics easier to approach. Enjoy!

Fabulous you are doing this. I was brought up in Norway in 70s with Tempo - a series magazine of mostly Franco-Belgian comic stories and unfortunately lost a lot of back issues in a fire. I returned from Norway yesterday having found a fantastic book shop in Olso that carry a lot of these titles in Norwegian - I really struggle to find English equivalents outside of the big 3.
I came home with a number of collected editions of Ric Hochet (Allan Falk in Norwegian), Bruno Brazil, Bob Morane, Bernard Prince & Mark Breton - after missing them for 30 or 40 years. The stories and the artwork is just out of this world.
Your comment was the best thing today! I know exactly what you mean. I love so many things in comics but the more I do this the clearer it gets how deep imprint Franco-Belgian comics have left me.

Thanks for the coming series. For shure there’s a lot to spoke and shown about the BD and the european comic scene. Although I like the Earl Grey work on this subject there’s not enough to spread the word, specially amoung the non-Eeropean readers. So good luck
Earl Grey is such a great channel! But as there are dozens of channels for Marvel/DC or Manga I feel European comics are quite often mentioned only as an exotic extra or individual cases rather than something bigger as a whole. I have a long term plan. Let’s see how it works out.

I have been complaining about British CZcamsrs always reviewing American comics - IT GETS ON MY NERVES. I want to hear about International Comics!!!!! I wish Europeans of all kinds made videos and if they don't speak English had subtitles so all the nations industries can be learned. I want to learn all nations comic industries but outside of Europe I'd say that Argentina and China's comics would be next on my wish list to learn the history of all their comic companies/history!!!
I share your frustration. While my channel is not restricted by any country of origin there will be a lot of European comics displayed. This is so because I like their content.
American comics - especially Marvel/DC - in general get more views. The same is true with manga. I don’t say this to critique these channels. It’s just the way it is. It’s what majority of readers want to watch. I follow some of those channels too. And I’m pretty sure there will be at least some manga on my channel.
But just like you I want to put other comics into spotlight. They deserve it. Lately I’ve been reading more british comics:)
@@analogcomics While i wish there were countless channels for all companies world wide the British audience is the most annoying because they have not only many non marvel and dc companies, but when they do cover both of those companies they never cover the british characters and their stories. they always cover the same american characters and stories all americans do. I do understand that is because the american characters get all the stories but what i don't understand is how the kids that come up in commonwealth countries and love marvel and dc and egt jobs there don't get tasked with or don't want to use the 100s of characters both companies have in their rosters from teh commonwealth.
@@cliffwoodbury5319 It’s interesting to learn about your view of your local comics scene. This type of knowledge is almost impossible to get if you don’t live there. I know that if Finland would have many(or any) famous hero comics characters I’d be talking about them a lot. And so would any Finnish channel. In fact I do have one Finnish fantasy comic I’d like to talk about at some point. I hope your local channels remember to give more love to local talents.
As a side note UK has always been great place to get comics. I’ve visited London few times and Forbidden Planet is ALWAYS on places to visit list:) Store that big could never survive in our small market.

Oh man!! I have been complaining that it is very difficult to obtain information about the different BD's in english. Thanks for taking this important and passionate task personally. Can't wait to find out your comments on such iconic comics as "Spirou & Fantasio" "Marsupilami" & "Gomer Goof" by Franquin, "Johan et Pirluit" "The Smurfs" "Benny Breakiron" by Peyo "Blue Coats" by Cauvin & Salverius, "Blake & Mortimer" by Edgar P. Luis, I very much agree about the info in English. If there is any it is scattered and in small pieces. For me this is the obstacle and motivation at the same time. Please bear in mind that it’ll take me for awhile to get to the actual comics. I want to start with a broader look at the Franco-Belgian comics scene. I feel it is needed to help people appreciate it more.

Thank you for doing this series. there is not a lot of information on the european comics scene in english (especially about markets outside of France and Belgium like Italy, spain, and poland). I Look forward to watching this whole series
The European comics scene is quite messy and ununified. I’m trying to slice it to smaller pieces to make it easier to understand. Thank you for your comment. It really helps to get some encouragement😊
Oh, Walt Disney's LTB in Finnish...
The left one, No. 65, is No. 68 in German, called “Alles Gute, Donald”.
The other one is No. 54, “Micky, der Meisterdetektiv”
I've read these to pieces and what was left was read to pieces by my son. I collected the first hundred volumes(most are lost now)and then some random ones after that but I felt the stories and art started going to a direction I wasn't enjoying that much anymore.
No.65 in Finnish is something like "Chill out, Donald". The Mickey one is No. 47 here and called "Tracking thugs"

Thorgal will be featured in future as Jean Van Hamme is one of my favorite writers. And I need to collect&read Thorgal first😬I’m only 1/4 through the series. Norway first brings to mind Jason and Swizerland reminds me of Derib. I have great comics from both creators.

I am from belgium and the comics are amazing but there alot of other countries that have amazing comics. And if you in belgium you need to go to the comic museum
This is very true. So many good comics out there from all over the world. Having said that very few countries come even close to Belgium in being influental. I’d love to visit that museum and also the Comic Strip Route in Brussels! Angouleme Comics Festival in France is also on my to-do list.
Surely in Europe itself and outside there’s a lot a misconceptions of what it is really happening in the this continent. So I can only wish you good luck in this endeavor.
Thank you rewanji. I agree. Comics have been very un-unified effort in Europe for a long time. Today there is more motivation for a co-operation though. With these videos I’ll add my two cents into discussion.

What about Italian comics?
I´d love to do deeper dive into Italian - and Spanish comics, too! But first I need to climb over the mountain of Franco-Belgian comics.
Having said that, if you have Italian comics you´d suggest to read I´d love to hear them! Of course they´d have to be available in Finnish or English.
I will do separate single videos of any comics that move me some way between these Franco-Belgian vids so there could be Italian ones too. Such a great country. I miss the Holidays that I spent there...
@@analogcomics I don't think there are many English editions of these comics, Dylan Dog being a notable exception. Tex Willer is pioneer of Wild West genre in Italian comics. It apparently has great publication in Finnish therefore you could probably find some of those big trade paperback editions that talks about history of the character. Zagor is a popular one but there were no efforts in translating it to English until 2015. I have one of those trade paperbacks but I couldn't find English translation on Google. I'm not Italian so I can't help you much
@@fica1137 Oh, I thought you were Italian, sorry:) I will look up the ones you mentioned. Tex Willer is popular among western collectors here with new books coming out steadily. Cocco Bill is one of my favorites since childhood. It’s available in Finnish.
