TCM Race & Hollywood explores "Blackface" 2003

- This is one of many interstitials we created for TCM in their Race & Hollywood series back around 2003-2004. Hard to believe that actors as famous as Shirley Temple, Fred Astaire and Al Jolson performed with blackface in films. Oddly "blackface" is still relevant today in 2019. Bill Cosby and historian Donald Bogle discuss Amos and Andy and the films The Jazz Singer (1927), Check and Double Check (1930), The Littlest Rebel (1935), and more. TCM Writer/Producer Jean Franz produced the interviews and handled post production supervision. The super cool intro and ending graphics were created by Eric Defino at Ray Gun. The interviews were directed by Jean Franz between 2000 and 2004.

@@they.luh.madiii5472 kinda sucks Al Jolson gets lumped in with the really disrespectful people in blackface. The dude was the biggest civil rights advocate of his day, most black jazz musicians from the period have a direct link in first starting out with Al.
This shii is not only disrespectful disgusting or sad but its low key creepy asffff😭😔
They have a weird obsession its like that of a relationship with a narcissist (them) and its victim.
The Truth is Al Jolson Fought for black artists to be on broadway
Good shit!!!!
AHHH BILL COSBY😳
It's like seeing O.J. Simpson in a Naked Gun movie. You just can't leave behind your knowledge of who he really is when he's on screen.
Bill Clinton pops on screen & nobody complains, even though his actions toward women were no different than Bill Cosby
.
You forgive Clinton because he’s white, but demonize Cosby because he’s black. (They both should be treated equally.)
AHHHH BING CROSBY😳
Where can we find all these full documentaries.
Yesirr my boy Amos
Al Jolson sewed up for black right
Yes I want Bill Cosby to be my moral compass

But is he incorrect in the things he said?
Sexual predators have no color, they are all trash. Liberals stoking that fire about racism and you all falling for it . Before Jesus came down to earth racism always exsisted . Keep watching those socialists channels. ABC, MSDNC , CNN , CBS .PBS. WE WILL NEVER GET ALONG AND YOU WOULD BE DUMMER FOR IT.

Black stars could perform in whiteface it might highlight the strange nature of it all.
Whiteface is a thing with black actors
You obviously haven't seen the movie "White Chicks" it's been done and there was no big cry of racism for that movie !!!

HOW DARE BILL COSBY COMPLAIN ABOUT ANYONE!!!
Stfu 🤫
Black is beautiful.😂😂😂😂😂😂🤠🤠💤😴 lmfao
Tcm yall smart make a show to promote yall movies wowww
Movies routinely end 10-15 minutes before top of the hour. So TCM fills that extra time with promoting their store, their hosts, and their movies. I see nothing wrong with that.
You know anybody Physically or mentally destroyed by seeing somebody in blackface?

@@margaretthomas8899 people still do blackface... don't act ignorant
@@Meg-zu8fi By whom, and where is blackface being done please? Perhaps you have witnessed it lately, somewhere? How did I become the subject of the open discussion here. I thought it was about TCM race and Hollywood explores blackface, which has social media options for all to comment.
All this is about is protecting contemporary profit!
They were jewish.. Not white.
"White" Jews.. they still have white privilege.
@@TaysiaMorena no fk you.
We are not jews, We are not responsible for Black slavery and black segregation.
There's nothing wrong with blackface, the problem lies with people themselves.
Blackface is wrong. Black people get killed for having dark skin. Many feel the need to lighten their skin to get jobs. Darker toned Black people face criticism simply for their skin tone. And for a White person, who doesn't ever have to deal with racial prejudice, to paint themselves dark, in a poor imitation of Black skin, for laughs or a good time, is wrong. They can wipe that off and go have a normal life. Black people can't just change their skin with a wipe. We have to live in it everyday and deal with racial injustices everyday because of it.
Nothing is inherently wrong until people add meaning and symbolism to it. Let people wear blackface. Let people wear whiteface. I don't care. People are being people, and humans always mimic one another. Lastly, nobody really cares about arguments online, so why have them?
@@PotterPossum1989 You sound stupid as hell. So Trump mocking someone who as an disability is ok with you.
@@PotterPossum1989 why have an argument online you say? Well its obvious your comment about it being ok to do blackface will obviously start an argument.
@@TheeVampyre that’s kinda colorism not racism ...
Only way to fix everything - Go back to when we all lived in the countries of our origin and color. Then of course this could not be possibly shown! How about the other non Contemporary profiteering view please? For the proper balance, context and fairness!
It wouldn’t change things completely
@@terrianneeeWhat do you think it would do?
