- A performance by William Marx of John Cage's 4'33.
Filmed at McCallum Theatre, Palm Desert, CA.
Composer John Adams wrote the following in The New York Times review of Mr. Cage's new biography, "The Zen of Silence" :
"John Cage....prodded us to reevaluate how we define not only music but the entire experience of encountering art."

I once didn't speak for five minutes and this guy sued me for copyright...
Pipo Productions lol!
Hahahahahahaha
Pipo Productions Well, silence shouldn't really be copyrighted anyway. We'd have a ton of court cases that shouldn't really exist & fines that don't need to be placed on random, innocent people...
I once did’t speak for 1 hour and half and nobody cared.
:D
Finally, a piece that Beethoven can actually hear.

It a funny comment. I found it funny, but it is not a piano piece. That was not the idea from J. Cage

Piscaso So epic XD

I'd like to have had the "Dead Cats, For Throwing" concession at this "concert"....
Finally, a song that fits my vocal range!
this is the funniest comment
It’s technically music because songs have lyrics and a piece of music doesn’t.
@@starforge5663a better way to describe it: music is art, and art doesnt really have a definition
@@ough. while that is a better way to describe it, I’m not wrong. A pice of music does not have lyrics while a song does.
I'm not a big fan of the first movement, but the second movement is HIGHLY underrated. And don't get me started on the third movement. Simply spectacular!
Honestly I think that the second movement is the best just the emotion and chair creeks alone out class the third

You are probably making mistakes by playing notes instead of rests on your instrument. :) I know this piece is very hard to play, and therefore you should practice it more. :) Try playing more rests and less notes, until you get it right. :)
This is the type of music Beethoven listens to
This comment is under rated
funnnnnnnnnnnny!
Not exactly true. The revolutionary aspect of 4'33" is that the music is created by the ambient noise, by the audience. Sadly, Beethoven could not hear this masterpiece.

He did. Mike Batt released an album a few years back that ended with a minute of silence, and got hit with a copyright strike from John Cage's estate.

We did this piece in my first year of college, as my percussion professor showed us unique pieces like this all the time and it actually totally broke my mind open to asking "what is the definition of music truelly?"... Anyway, when we performed it, part way through the 2nd act, someone left to go to the bathroom and all the noise they made of walking down the bleachers, the door, the bathroom door, the super faint toilet flush, washing hands, and all sounds of them returning. My teacher at the end acknowledged it as a solosist
