I learned a few days ago that is why they make mortar weaker than bricks and concrete. So that any failure just causes a staircase crack through the mortar and not the bricks. Cracks through the bricks being considered a structural failure. Though I guess one cracked brick is not an issue.
the hardness of brick varies greatly.the mortar should always be softer then the brick. above ground situation so that when the brick becomes wet the moisture in the brick will escape through the mortar joint instead of the face of the brick because if the mortar was harder than the brick, the face of the brick would spall when the moisture tries to escape through the face of the brick during freezing weather
