  • Welcome to Flight Nomad! Join us on an exciting journey from Osaka Kansai Airport (KIX) to Melbourne International (MEL), transiting through Beijing Daxing (PKX) and Shanghai Pudong (PVG) Airports. This trip with China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines offered one of the cheapest one-way tickets, and provided a unique opportunity to explore the new Beijing Daxing Airport, designed by Zaha Hadid.
While the flights were budget-friendly and overall pleasant, we encountered a few challenges. The JAL ground crew in Osaka refused to check in our flights and luggage all the way to Melbourne, citing the next leg to Melbourne departing the following day at 00:20. Despite our insistence and the ability to print luggage tags through to Melbourne, both the ground crew and supervisor refused to comply. China Eastern hires JAL ground crew for their check-in and ground handling services in Osaka.
Upon arriving at Shanghai Pudong, we had only 90 minutes between flights. Time was tight, and my baggage arrived at the very last run. I rushed to the departure hall, only to find that the check-in counters for my MU739 flight to Melbourne had just closed. After explaining my situation to the ground crew, they compassionately allowed me to check in. I then had to rush to the gate at the satellite terminal, requiring an underground train ride from the main terminal.
If you plan to take this flight, make sure they will allow you to check your baggage all the way through. Alternatively, collect your baggage at a leg where you have ample time for transit. The transit time in Beijing Daxing was slightly longer, but remember that you have to clear customs and immigration to enter China.
In this video, we provide a detailed review of our flight experience, including the in-flight services, the impressive Beijing Daxing Airport, and the challenges we faced. Whether you're an aviation enthusiast or a frequent traveler, this video offers valuable insights and tips for your journeys.
