    I can't thank you enough. My LCD screen was randomly not working, even when set to Automatic Display Switch. It's been driving me IN SANE for over an hour. I'm so glad you touched on the gunk-in-the-eyepiece issue!! Sho' nuff, that was the problem!!! There was no visible debris, but after a good clean with a microfiber cloth, it started working again. THANK YOU!!!!

    Just want to thank you for taking the time to do this video. I just got a new Nikon Z7 ii at the end of January and your tutorials on the use of this camera have helped tremendously. That little button on the side of the viewfinder really threw me for a loop one day, I must have touched it by mistake and couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t view my images on the back of the camera. Anyway, thank you again. I enjoy all of your videos.

    Thanks Hudson, you helped me solve one issue I've had with my Z6. I need you see the level when I shoot because my eyeglasses don't let me see the entire frame. I also want to see the histogram. My Fujifilm cameras allow me to see all on a single display, but with the Z6 I have to toggle through several option with the display button. But now I realized I could have the viewfinder display the level and the back screen set to display the histogram. If I want to view the histogram I just pull the camera away and look at the back screen. I wish Nikon would make this easier, but this is better than toggling the display button.

      If you look closely (I know an ad interrupts Grrrrr) you'll see that little pinpoint AF point goes green when it locks. Single point, Pinpoint and 3D tracking squares all go green when locked. Yes, the display button above the screen on the right toggles display information and that is programmable in the custom settings. I have setup videos here on CZcams going through all those details for just about every Z camera yet made all for free. :-)

    I have had malfunctions where the screen on the back does not work. This happens and its not confusion over camera controls. What I found was this the malfunction only happened if I turned my camera on while the lens cap was on the lens attached to the body. If I turned it back off and removed / reinserted the battery it would start to work properly again. I have stopped turning my camera on while i have a lens cap on the lens I am using and it seems to be working. Not a scientific, controlled experiment however. I use a Z6.

    Hey Hudson, new z8 owner here coming from d750. I agree the prioritize viewfinder mode kicks ass and gets me closest to a mode that feels similar to the DSLR days. But I noticed When I'm in this mode and hit the DISP button it only gives me the view with the shooting stats and no option to switch to a live view on the rear monitor with a button press--something I would've accomplished on my d750 by hitting the "Lv" button. The only way I've found to engage live view on the rear monitor when in prioritize vf mode is to tilt the screen out slightly which kicks it on, but this feels a bit clumsy. I know this is a bit of a corner case, but any ideas for a work around here or some custom button mapping that could get me there?

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  Před 4 měsíci

      Nah, you're essentially turning "live view" on the back LCD off in prioritize viewfinder mode. It becomes a tool only for viewing settings or playback. I actually use auto-display switch pretty exclusively these days. We have USB-C Power Delivery charging so battery life is really not much of a concern now. Carry a PD battery brick and top it off between shoots. amzn.to/3UbpT26 The camera is it's own charger. It will even run on the tripod while charging at the same time.

    Great stuff, as always, Hudson! Here's a weird question for you: In reading through my user's manual for my Z7 II, it recommends keeping lenses and camera in a well-ventilated area (to prevent mold?). Try cleaning the eye sensor up by your eyepiece. You pull up to remove the eyecup and clean under it with a cloth. A dirty sensor (the camera thinks you have your eye to the viewfinder when you don't) is the culprit 9 times out of 10.

  • @jules8908

    Hi Hudson, I hope you can help me with a problem on my Nikon Z8. I can’t see through my viewfinder. I watched your video and I have made sure that the viewfinder button on the left side is on “automatic display switch”. I can see what Im shooting on the back screen, but when I put my eye to the EVF, all i see is black. I have cleaned the sensor above the EVF with a qtip, eyeglass cleaner on a qtip, and have used the bulb to blow away any dust on the sensor. Still…only black when I look through the EVF. If I put my hand over the sensor, the image on my back screen goes away., but returns when I remove my hand.

      Oh Jeez Julie! That's awful. Pull the battery for about 5 minutes, put it back, power up and try hitting that button till it says viewfinder only. If there's nothing there, then it needs to go to Nikon for a warranty repair. I've never heard of that. It's usually a piece of dirt on the sensor, but you eliminated that. You went through it quite methodically and intelligently. I fear it may be a defect. :-(
