Bob Mould: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Bob Mould came alone, except for his 1987 Lake Placid Blue Fender Stratocaster. We provided the Epiphone Blues Custom 30 amp, which he promptly cranked. Needless to say, he announced his own Tiny Desk Concert without using the paging system.Mould isn't a shy man - his power chords will tell you that - but he's humble and gentle. Many know Mould from his days with Hüsker Dü, an awesome punkish band from Minnesota that laid the groundwork for the Pixies and more. His subsequent work with Sugar managed to do something none of his other records did so well: Copper Blue sold hundreds of thousands of copies.Beauty and Ruin is solo album No. 11 for Mould, and as you can hear from these songs, he's all amped up and ready to go. Sweaty and happy, he makes "Makes No Sense At All" his final calling card - classic Hüsker Dü. --BOB BOILEN

The one man wall of sound
yeah, looking for the other band members, like they must be somewhere off camera
Couldnt have said it better myself
It only just occurred to me that while "one singer+acoustic guitar" is an entire genre in its own right, "singer+electric guitar" is not. This makes me wonder why that is.
The guitar is a rhythm instrument. 🤘🤘🤘
Such an aptly perfect descriptor!
Watch former Hüsker Dü frontman Bob Mould, armed with only his trusty blue Stratocaster, play an explosive set at the Tiny Desk!
I think we're due for a new set of songs from Bob at the Tiny Desk.
Thanks for having Bob he’s so talented
@@adamderloshon please, and another J. Mascis!
@@adamderloshon Agree with this and an updated request!
That guitar tone is absolutely unmistakable.
God, the voice and the guitar . . . I'd never mistake those for belonging to anyone else.
Thank goodness there's only one.
That voice got me through some really dark times when I was a teen.
❤
The real deal. True musician. True artist. A gentleman. Musicians like Bob are in such short supply today. Saw him live Sunday night in Bethlehem PA...still have a smile on my face tonight. Thanks Bob!!
There are no fake artists.
@@eldoabrahamsonReally? I beg to differ....
this has made an awful Monday suddenly bearable. In Bob we trust
Did he... suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Like a great bottle of wine, he just keeps getting better with time.
Saw Bob Mould play at my college in the late 80s might have been 1990. Small venue, maybe 2-300 people in the room. How he managed to produce SO MUCH sound was mind-blowing. The venue had a lot of floor to ceiling glass windows and they nearly vibrated right out of the frames. I'm shocked to this day that the windows didn't simply shatter to pieces.
Longtime Bob superfan here. Special talent right there.
Saw this video on the right and thought 'wouldnt be nice if this had some life?' and then this old dude is not afraid of playing an electric guitar for a change, thanks for the energy Mr. Mould
One of the most exciting performers I have ever seen live. Just from the gut. No posing or choreography.
Hüsker Dü and Soul Asylum shaped my taste for originality in my music tastes. Bob plays from his heart, and it is inspiring and captivating. No one in the entire world sounds like Bob Mould, and Hüsker Dü was exceptional
If there's one thing I admire more than anything else about Bob, it's his ability to make one guitar sound like a pair. You could almost call it a kind of Carter style, but I'm not certain. A bit like banjo playing.
I just ran into bob mould in front of my apartment today in Chicago. great guy.
"The War" is a masterpiece, and this performance was incredible.
Bob's voice is holding up very well all these years.
He looks great!
In Bob we trust.
So nice to see all the Bob love on this message board.
That was badass. Solo performance with guts spilling out. Inspiring.
Nobody sounds like Mr. Bob Mould. What a talent!
Would the 46 who gave this the thumbs-down please stand up and be pilloried?
@euclaster yo mama
Bob Mould is Bob Mould. There is no middle ground, and there are no compromises.
@euclaster how did you end up here?
Well, back then it wasn't the huge crowd listening to Candy Apple Grey, too. But we did. All the time. We never cared what other people listened to, did we? I appreciated all these cozy and wild concerts, when maybe 700 people filled the whole room. It felt intense and at the same time releasing to share my little space with these people, being so close to the music and the people that played it.
@@9ZERO6 And there is little variation.
I adore the guy. Always have. From Hüsker Dü to now.
Bob Mould is the freaking coolest. I love Sugar.
Been reading his book "See a Little Light" and been going back and listening to Husker, Sugar and his solo work and it all makes sense now... why Husker ended, why Sugar only lasted 2 albums... Bob is such an icon!
Tiny Desk is perfect for Bob! I love it. Thank you.
I interviewed him for the 2nd time recently, the guy is amazing. His new album is as dark and intense as "Black Sheets", then he put out a mondo huge 19 CD collection of his solo work. If you want to die listening to some of the best guitar work, hey man, I suggest you get that. When I said "Man, it's just intense and loud, like Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music"" Bob said "Try sticking your head in the middle of it sometime". Classic Bob.
My ears are still ringing from that Sugar concert in Austin (circa 1993).
That was pretttty prettty prettty. You can see how his sound bloomed many bands. Bob, I'm coming to see you Apr14 in Vancouver with all my Mouldy wax and a FELT TIPPED PEN
Bob Mould is a TROUBADOUR! Rolled up, rocked proud, said 'thank you folks', and left em knocked the f.... OUT!
Fucking Brilliant! Love Bob Mould..so much of his music has influenced me in more ways than I can begin to explain. Thanks NPR for having him in, don't know how I missed this Tiny Desk episode but I'm glad I found it.
Beauty and Ruin is so good. Low season especially...Husker Du changed my life when I was a teen. Zen Arcade blew my mind. Thanks, Bob . Thanks, Grant.
@NaturallyNathalie2 Totally, but as a full album I prefer Flip Your Wig. Those two songs are really really great though.
I've been a fan of Husker Du for a while, but only found out about Bob's solo work and Sugar a few days ago; Beauty and Ruin is the only album I've listened to in the past 24 hours.
And thank you too Greg!
Brilliant. I grew up on this man.
Fabulous stuff by the nearly man of rock who should have been the every man of rock. Sheer genius. Love you, Bob.
Dude, he's the best
Bob Mould once kicked my ass for giving him a light beer to drink. I deserved it.
I loved this so much!!
Bob, you always make me Smile! love, Lisa, 54, from Chicago/WXRT-land ♡♡♡
Exceptional! as always! Thanks Bob!

Very simple but powerful. Bob's the man.
Thanks for restoring my inspiration, Bob!
Thanks for doing this NPR!
Fantastic work here!
Still awesome in 2021!
Great vibe.
Bless you Bob Mould
Love this dudes last few solo records more than most rock music that's come out in recent years. He's like a fine wine only gets better with age. Didn't love husker du but respect their legacy. Sugar was good but bob has finally turned into a great song writer
SUGAR was F'ing phenomenal. Copper Blue is at the Top. No words. Bob said it all.
Finally? Wow..
NSAvan#4 You are joking!
Agreed! Husker Du and Sugar are AMAZING...and his solo stuff is MAGIC.

Great stuff!
Brilliant!
Going to see Bob at his opening show of the tour tomorrow. I'm really excited.
Nothing better. Thank you Bob.
BOB. Marvelous!
Bob loves you...and wants you to be happy...
I love this man.
Hay que ver como rellena el espacio este señor ... maravilloso.
Listening to Sound Opinions tonight, Bob's voice just makes my heart so big and happy! So I thought I'd get a little more of him online... so glad to see I'm not his only fan! I mean, I know I'm not, but I don't know any... I'm from Mpls back in the day, but live in CO now
Bob tearing it up!
Sounds great
he just knocks it out.
Fantastisch, dank je wel Bob...
Nice rig sounds great. Cool color on that Strat, amp sounds great with it...good stuff :)

What an outstanding human being
Wonderful
If you ever get a chance to see him perform live do it !
The savior of my heart. 💙✌️🗽🏴☠️
awesome !!!
OUTSTANDING
I love Bob
LEGEND.
Love it
Still love him, after all those years.
A true soul working for the Superorganism I'd like to last.❤
That voice...
I know its impossible, but man what I'd give to see Bob play with Greg Norton and Grant Hart again.
They played a punk club near my house (City Gardens!) a bunch of times when I was in middle / high school, but they were 21 and older nights. I missed him last winter in Philly, but I have tickets again to see him this fall in Lancaster. You can't imagine how psyched I am!
Luv me some bob mould. Strategic alliances celebrated summer gave me some scars but also direction. 🤘🏼
I've always been a Husker Du/Sugar fan, saw Bob Mould live a few times. He reminds me of a combination of Billy Bragg, Richard Thompson, Pete Townshend.
Grande Bob!
Genius
A taking squirrel introduced me to this dude. So thankful.
talking*
I was lucky enough to see him play solo at Fitzgerald's in Houston. Most bands have at least 3 members. Creating that sound alone takes talent.
Bob leaves parts of himself on stage every time he plays. He does not need a band.
I saw him play a solo show at Liberty Lunch in Austin back in the mid 90s. He was playing Brasilia Crossed with Trenton on a 12 string acoustic and he broke a couple of strings. He kept singing acapella while he reached over and grabbed his six string electric and finished the song that way. It's stuck with me for 30 years, such an amazing performer and song writer.
@@bf5175 I remember Liberty Lunch, but I moved away in 1990. Do you remember The Picket Line Coyotes? Prescott Curlywolf? Fagz on X?
Re affirms my faith
Bob Mould writes new songs and they sound so fuckin nostalgic its ridiculous. no one can do what he does.
mestre demais!
I understand....this is just Bob being Bob. MY FAULT! I cant let go of the past. I want to hear: "I'm down again." "IDWTK if you are lonely"
Fuck damn, this is good.
I came here for the music and for the thumbnail of Bob screaming.
👍
That's it, thats how a guitar should sound
Epiphone should make the blues custom 30 again.
