      Voltage will always fluctuate.

    • @1djbecker
      @1djbecker Před 2 měsíci +13

      @@tonyc223 It's a controlled alternator. The ECU tracks the battery state of charge and reduces the charging voltage when the battery doesn't need a fast charge. That's why it starts out with a rapid charge (higher voltage) to replace the charge used starting, then drops to a low charge rate to save fuel while idling.
      There is also the effect that the pulsing output of the alternator will result in a minor fluctuation in the voltage reading, but that's not the primary cause here.

    That idiot with the multimeter doesn’t comprehend that the reading before you start the engine being lower then starting it and the voltage could be anywhere between 13-14 volts means it’s charging but the reason is it jumping or changing numbers is the car is actively using voltage while running and because different things turn on and off periodically instead of constantly on the voltage varies slightly

    • @ThorsDecree
      @ThorsDecree Před 2 měsíci +15

      He's watching the voltage _rise_ (before the fan even cuts on, mind) and saying "see, it's all over the place" as though there's no pattern to the numbers he's seeing 😆
      Then when the fan cuts on the voltage obviously drops before starting to trickle up again. Dude's watching the voltmeter the whole time. Does he not know that bigger numbers are... like... _bigger?_
      He'd probably still freak out if he saw the needle dip on an analog meter when the fan cuts on because he seems to not realize that _electric_ devices cause _electric_ loads. Seems like all he saw is the meter not sitting perfectly still and freaked out as though he thinks a car's battery should hold a continuous exact voltage or something. Hell, he probably doesn't even know what electricity is, I bet he thinks it's magic. This was a particularly funny customer-complains-when-incompetently-incorrect clip lol.

Was there an issue with the oil change? Was there a leak the owner didn't know about and didn't check? Did the person driving it have no clue what they were doing and over-rev it? Was there some sort of mechanical defect that caused it? Need more info.

    It's pretty scary a guy buys a cheap voltmeter and has no idea how these cars work. It's not household current you're not going to get stable exact voltage it's going to vary between loads and engine RPM but if it's long as it's charging about 13 volts or more it's fine. as a person who works in late model Hondas I see a lot of people bringing their cars and saying it's not charging at all well most late model Honda is the way they're built barely charged above 12.6 volts when there's no load to lower engine load. This is to get better fuel mileage but when you turn the headlights on they kick up to about 14.4 volts. I've had many cars towed in here or driven in here saying the alternator is bad after actually checking it properly finding out there's nothing wrong with it. This seems to happen a lot after somebody has their AAA battery tested by the AAA guy and he tested the alternator as well.

Unless you have something pulling a heavy load at that moment _(short term intermittent load)_ like when the fans kicked in. OR if you have a bad battery. Otherwise you should be getting around 14.5v at the battery with the engine running.

    On some of the cases you go through there isn’t enough information about what the problem is or isn’t.

    4:21 - I realize this is probably mostly for mechanics and their amusement, but we non-mechanics like to watch as well. Have no idea why this car won’t start, and probably don’t understand at least a quarter of the segments. Please help us out and offer a bit more of an explanation. It would be appreciated.

    Thats a good brake rotor at 2:27. Just needs to be machined and then good as new.

    7:05 if you are gonna do commentary about cars, get your parts right. That is a tie rod that wasn't tightened down after they put in a new hub, needs replaced now yes but it is not a control arm. that would be that big A shapped thing at the bottom that holds the ball joint and attaches to the frame, not the steering rack.

    Instead of checking the oil of the lady's car that did 200 km in 6 months they should check the fuel as it probably got bad.

    12,5 is low which means the battery is almost dead, should be at least 12,8 or close to. Doesn't seem like much of a difference but it is.

    I'd love it if you could tell us which make, model and year some of these are. Like which Honda has the impossible to remove trailing arm bolt (3:24). We're used car shopping now so I like to know which vehicles have design issues like that.

    Here in sunny Japan, the vast majority of car owners get their car professionally serviced. If a service is skipped this is picked up at the compulsory biennial safety inspection. So, at least in theory, we don't have to share the road with dangerous mechanical wrecks. Of course some moan at the strictness of the inspection (Shakan), but your site illustrates the no-legislation alternative.
