La Rochelle est une ville du Sud-Ouest de la France, préfecture du département de la Charente-Maritime, en région Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
Avec 77 205 habitants en 2019, La Rochelle est la commune la plus peuplée du département, devant Saintes, Rochefort et Royan et occupe le quatrième rang régional après Bordeaux, la capitale régionale, Limoges et Poitiers.
Ses habitants sont appelés les Rochelaises et les Rochelais.
Située en bordure de l’océan Atlantique, au large du pertuis d'Antioche, et protégée des tempêtes par la « barrière » des îles de Ré, d’Oléron et d’Aix, la ville est avant tout un complexe portuaire de premier ordre, et ce depuis le XIIe siècle. Elle est de fait une « Porte océane » par la présence de ses trois ports (de pêche, de commerce et de plaisance). Ville de forte tradition commerciale, son port fut actif dès ses origines et connut un développement important pendant la période classique, puis dans la période contemporaine grâce au port en eau profonde de La Pallice qui le hisse désormais au sixième rang national.
Cité millénaire, dotée d’un riche patrimoine historique et urbain, la capitale historique de l'Aunis est aujourd’hui devenue la plus importante ville côtière entre l'estuaire de la Loire et l’estuaire de la Gironde. Ses activités urbaines sont multiples et fortement différenciées. Ville aux fonctions portuaires et industrielles encore importantes, elle possède un secteur administratif et tertiaire largement prédominant que viennent renforcer son université et un tourisme en plein développement.

It is in fact an “Ocean Gate or Gateway to the ocean” through the presence of its three harbours (fishing, commercial and recreational). A city with a strong commercial tradition, its port was active from its origins and experienced a significant development during the classical period, then in the contemporary period thanks to the deep-water port of La Pallice, which now ranks sixth in the country.
A thousand-year-old city with a rich historical and urban heritage, the historic capital of Aunis has now become the most important coastal city between the Loire estuary and the Gironde estuary. Its urban activities are multiple and strongly differentiated. City with port and industrial functions still important, it has an administrative and tertiary sector largely predominant that come to strengthen its university and a tourism in full development.
