- Whenever you’re using a piece of software for the first time, there’s always going to be somewhat of a learning curve involved, but you can speed the learning process up just by learning from the mistakes of others and making an effort to avoid making them yourself. In this post I’ll be going over 5 of the most common mistakes that new GIMP users make, and how you can avoid making them yourself. Getting these misunderstandings out of the way early will hopefully make your learning experience a little easier and more enjoyable.

Common mistakes noobs make:
1. Editing the wrong layer.
2. Not adding an alpha channel.
3. Transforming images more than once.
4. Forgetting to clear selections.
5. Neglecting tool selections.
Things I learned when using GIMP for first time:
- I learned about layers lol.
- I learned how to make PNG images (transparent images).
Thank You, Logos By Nick!
(P.S. I really like that music in your intro.)
5. Neglecting tool settings*****
Been using Gimp for 10+ Years pretty casually and always used Layer>transparency>add alpha channel. So this video actually taught me something thanks Nick!
I am very new to gimp and I was wondering how to get the brush tool and other tools on my tool bar? Also do you have any other tips and tricks? Thanks
As a seasoned GIMP user myself, a quick glimpse at the content was enough to recommend this video to any new GIMP user. I, and everyone else knows that even knowing about these issues, is not enough. All of those problems will have to happen in order for us to learn.
Great video nick!
_a quick _*_glimpse_* ... Did you do it on purpose? 🤣 -> glimpse-editor.github.io/
Not saving enough is also a nice one.
That applies to any app!
Thank you so much.
I am a newbie and just started learning gimp and inkscape and this channel is really really super ultra helpful.
Much love, Logos By Nick.
Holy axe , i didn't know about this transformation issue. I was doing a logo for my band and rotated , scaled and transformed it again and again and in the end it was always blurry. I already expected my computer to be haunted.
Thank You! Best channel on the topic of GIMP, i completely taught this program myself with your help.
Thank you so much, I downloaded this software yesterday and spent all day trying to troubleshoot. Then I see this video and you answered and brought to my attention all of the mistakes I took. Thank you so much
i'm just wondering how your brain pieces all this together GREAT job
I've been using GIMP for many years, and I still get lost in my layers at times. I'll be trying to make an edit, not see it happen and get frustrated. Then I realize I've get a layer selected that hiding behind a visible layer on top of the selected layer.
Also, I learned something new. Don't transform an image too much.
Hey Nick! I love your channel and you are an amazing teacher. Thanks for teaching us in such a beginner-friendly manner. Looking forward for more awesome tutorials :)
Great as always. Wishing for such a list of Cardinal Sins for Inkscape users would be nice too. Esp. from your years of experiences with respect to logo / graphics design.
It's in the works!
before transforming a layer I always duplicate the layer to make a backup, just in case history is no longer available and latest action cannot be undone
I always make sure to lock layers other than the one I’m working on. Also hiding them can be useful.
Love your tutorials. Been watching your videos for a few years now and finally got your course bundle. I'll still keep watching the YT videos though too. Just now I can follow what you're doing much quicker than before. LOL
Thanks for enrolling!
@@LogosByNick No problem, thank you for doing these videos. I'm Lonnie in your course. The one who's going to be teaching out of work veterans to make money online using there computer. Since I'm recommending they use Inkscape and GIMP for there graphic design and work because it's FREE. I'm going to not use Photoshop and Illustrator myself just to show them it can be done. Naturally there's a few of them that said you MUST have photoshop if you're going to be a graphic designer. I plan to show them GIMP and Inkscape will do just fine for them getting started.
I found that I normally would have to add an alpha channel when using Gimp. So in the preferences, I enabled adding an alpha channel to imported images by default. So I don't have to do it manually for each image
Short and sweet, very valuable advice for novices, good to review these for me as well, as an advanced novice ;-)
Wow you must have been watching me while I was using gimp LOL. Wish I saw this 3 yrs ago. Every so often I still make some of these mistakes. Still a subscriber ( have to visit more often)
Big .👍
Stay well, Joe Z
I missed this one in the video: the size of the layer may also not be covering the part you want to edit. For instance your original image is 500 width x 400 height, then you resize it to 500 x 500 to create space on top of the image. Not a lot can be done with that top 100px because you forget to adjust the size of the original layer (which is still on 500x400). At took me a while to figure this one out but a way to resolve that is to right click on that layer. You can then choose options to change the size of the layer. At that moment I choose "Layer to Image size".
guilty of 2 and 3..
Thank you!
Great video for beginner mistakes
Could you make a video for beginners getting into logo design?
- what to learn (theory, typography etc.)
- what books/courses do you rexommend
- your tips & tricks for better progress
I would love to see your thoghts about this
Cool video, it's funny to watch this even as advanced GIMP user 😂 You mentioned some mistakes I'm still making when I'm unfocused at my work! 😅
Thanks Nick - enjoyed that
Good info...
How do I make the despeckle preview window bigger? It's so small!
I've been wondering but how did you make your gimp look so clean?
5:25 Or, in the Tool Options menu, select “Reset Tool Options” to get the defaults back.
Great tip`s & good video as always :D
and yes editing wrong layer or forgetting selection is so easy to forget when working like for me when i make texture for my 3D modells :D
I don't have the lower left menu. Example being brush size, ect
Inkscape and GIMP, a FOSS designer, nice.
this was a life saver!!!
Could you showcase, how to export a PNG File in GIMP and show, what diffferent information you should use in a PNG File and why?
3:48 Inkscape can do raster rotations, scalings and skews nondestructively. If you want more general 3D distortions, then I would say that’s a job for ... Blender!
Thank you... 👍
I used to have this problems but I moved on from them. Today I'm mostly struggling with the ui, the tools settings and the merging/overlaying thing
Excellent, you're the best :)
Thank you for sharing these!
Another great video!
Hi Nick, I watch a lot of your videos and most of them start off with some basic things that we do, I am astonished how consistent you are with that!
But is there some method or option in Inkscape to make this default? Like setting measure in pixels, avoiding the page border, etc.
3:00
Oh yeah, I had to learn about this one the painful way when I was asked to edit a logo which already had a low resolution... 😭
yes i have a question. im trying to smug a background removed layer with the same layer copied on top of it but smug tool isnt working at all.
also try it on newly imported pics and still not working.
Thanks, as usual this was very helpful.
Probably not the correct place for this question but I would appreciate any advice if possible. The problem - is it possible to add editable text boxes to a gimp image for use on a website, i.e. the customer can add their own details online? (similar to moonpig for example). If this is not possible with gimp do you have any suggestions for a suitable program. Many thanks in advance for your time. Regards
Love your Channel Nick sensei 👍
Thanks Nick.
I've already made a lot of these mistakes
Hello nick,
Pls make at least one video on how can we make paper mockups of logo in gim0
i was wrapping text around a circle and as i made the text and colored it, i select to path and it went there, but it was only outlined and not colored.. what did i do or not do?
I’m not a new user anymore but this was still worth watching.
It would be nice if the eraser tool created the alpha channel automatically when using it.
The eraser tool paints with the background colour, which can be anything you like.
@@lawrencedoliveiro9104 Didn't know that
@@matiasgoinheix366 Hmm, actually it might be a bit more subtle than that. If you have an alpha channel, then the eraser tool erases to transparent. But when you delete the alpha channel, then transparent areas get replaced with the current background colour. So maybe the eraser is always effectively trying to erase to transparent, it just gets replaced with the background colour if transparency is not available on the current layer.
@@lawrencedoliveiro9104 Yeah. What I meant on my first comment was that I don't see a reason why anybody would grab the Eraser tool to paint. I grab it to erase, and if the picture doesn't have an alpha channel, it would be useful if the eraser created one on the spot. Seems logical to me.
Maybe someone already did it
@@matiasgoinheix366 You might want that erase-to-background-colour behaviour, though.
Well done, thanks.
Hi to whoever might me reading this, I am very new to gimp and I was wondering how to get the brush tool and other tools on my tool bar? Also do you have any other tips and tricks? Thanks
Try pressing the Tab button. That toggles the visibility of the tools menu. If that doesn't work, try control + B to see if that opens the tools. If that doesn't work, try going to Windows > Dockable Dialogs and finding the menus you'd like to open.
I DID MY FIRST GTA 5 GIMP PIC YOUR VIDEOS HELPED ME I MIGHT HAVE TO WATCH MORE TILL I CAN HAVE EVERYTHING REMEMBERED
Can anyone pls say how to save only the edited final image(layer) in your lap???
Gracias Niiiiiiick!
Hello sir! If I may, what software do you use for video editing?
Hi Nick could you please do the Chrome Text effect on gimp?
How you made the thumbnail?
My cursor has a no go sign on it as i can't do anything on a image. Please help
Nice, thank you!
Hi 🙋♂️
Please make a tutorial “how to make folder icon for any movie” from movie poster using folder template
off topic: I wish you were making some Affinity videos from time to time. "You made me" buy the all suit and then left me alone in the wild Lol
I've been uploading Affinity tutorials at my other channel, "Design Made Simple". You can access it here: czcams.com/channels/9OV3PevmfZt1k1jQDzWm0A.html
@@LogosByNick czcams.com/video/nuUeryAC4iQ/video.html did you tested this?
Thanks
The distortion after transformations is very annoying. I use rotate by 90° and mirroring whenever possible to avoid it.
I have seen a couple of your videos. Nice job. The only thing is you talk quite fast. Which with what you are doing is difficult to watch what your doing especially if on a phone as you can not see the menu and adjustments. Otherwise I am loving it.
Common Mistakes New GIMP Users Make:
Not watching Logos by Nick xD
in all seriousness, your thorough and to the point instruction videos are the best.
I really like gimp but i feel i cant switch because as far as i know it have no smart object or mask layer these things are important to me i hope some ppl add it
I want your help on a special Assignment sir. How can i get in touch with you?
Can u teach photo editing with krita too? Coz i found both krita and gimp useful features
I don't know much about Krita, sorry!
@@LogosByNick ohhh ok
can you pls make a video on how to change shirt color
my first mistake was closing the toolboxes it took me ages to find how to get them back, next mistake was thinking it was the same as photoshop, never made a third mistake as i went back to photoshop
My inkscape doesn't has such features, why?
why do we not have a keyboard shortcut for select none in gimp???
It’s [Shift] [Ctrl] [A] -- Or did I misunderstand you?
You can customized your own shiortcut
Hey Nick, can you please make a video on T shirt designing?
Please make a tutorial on how to make a halloween photo like Benny have made.
Please make video on vector animation
I hope that each of your videos is translated into indonesia 🙏🙏🙏
ماشاء الله عليك
Nice
I still did it all the time.

Hey!
Here before this blows up
Fingers crossed! 🙂
Not only gimp...even corel, ps and others.
Why GIML hasn't CMYK mode? I can't print the file I made it
_Why _*_GIML_*_ hasn't CMYK mode? I can't print the file I made it_ :
I don't know about your *GIML* , but in *GIMP* there are several ways of selecting colors, including palettes, color choosers and using an eyedropper tool to select a colour on the canvas. The built-in color choosers include RGB/HSV selector or scales, water-color selector, *CMYK selector* and a color-wheel selector. Colors can also be selected using hexadecimal color codes as used in HTML color selection. GIMP has native support for indexed colour and RGB color spaces; *other color spaces are supported using decomposition* where each channel of the new color space becomes a black-and-white image. *CMYK, LAB and HSV (hue, saturation, value) are supported this way* .[105][106]
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIMP#Color
And to Print it's very easy, go to File/then click on -> Print/ or use Ctrl+P on your keyboard.
In the end a question raise to me: Are you trolling? I'm asking you because GIMP's haters (usually photoshop's fan boys) always use *CMYK* and *non-destructive* editing arguments against GIMP... Although working non-destructively in GIMP is *very* possible with some knowledge and using more layers and mask than usual as well as using 50% gray, but you heard that there are already some non-destructive tools implemented in GIMP 2.10.x like the crop tool, eraser tool and so as you did not pin point that. So GIMP's haters are now focusing on CMYK... which get back to your question...

Ich selber beschäftige mich ja auch auf meinem CZcams Kanal mit gimp und weiteren Programmen,
Würde mich echt freuen wenn dort mal jemand vorbei schaut 👍

mate change the intro music, it's really-really stupid
In other words, if you have the money buy photoshop!
Mic really needs some sort of filter
