Worked instantly for me. People were having a hard time hearing me over phone calls mentioning I sounded quiet and muffled. I tested this in the voice memos app and would have to speak very loud to get it to pick up my voice. It seems that no matter how clean you keep the bottom, over time that paper film behind the grill will become an issue. Thanks for the tip!
Works! I had two pair of AirPods: 1 pair that the mic stopped working after having for a year and a 2nd pair that the mic stopped working after getting water in them. All I could do with them was listen to music and watch videos. After doing this to both pairs, I can now use them to talk on the phone again. Tested it out on voice memos and the sound picks up just as it did when I first got them. Yes, this will cause minor damage to your AirPods (ex. some mesh will come out) but I’d rather deal with that than pay hundred plus dollars on a new pair. For the time being, this will do! Thank you for this video!!
Thank you so much. You are the only video that showed how to do this. That little plastic piece inside the microphone must be waterproofing. All I know is that you save me $150. Awesome 👏
Thanks, resetting AirPods wasn’t enough, hard reset and restarting iPhone did it for me. My left EarPod’s mic was broken because I tried to clean the mesh long time ago. Yesterday right mic started to fail so I thought giving a try. I only removed left mic’s mesh in case it was a firmware problem
This worked for me. I had an issue where the microphone didn't pick up the sound when I started talking. So it worked, but with a few second delay. This looks really wrong, I was sceptic about it but went with it since I was out of ideas. Now the microphone works perfectly. Still a bit concerned about the protection, but hey... At least they'll work for a while more :D
I have the same issue, but i"m pretty skeptical about this. I can't call for hey siri again, and i havee like a 2 second delay before it picks up my voice
I did everything as in the video, but it didn't affect the microphone. It works, but periodically, Voice Memos app shows that the sound appears and disappears. Has anyone encountered such a problem? What to do? Reset tried a thousand times.
When I removed the grill, the airpods did not work completely. When I put it in the box, it seemed to have a charge, but when I took it out, it suddenly discharged. Solution: Since you cannot fully remove the grille, it will be stuck to the sides. And this is most likely short-circuiting your airpods. After cleaning the edges, the airpod worked again. But I guess the microphone was broken because I was a bit of a novice.
Worked well, thanks! And I have an idea about the reasons for the issue. The problem appeared just a few weeks ago in my case, and at the same time, I left my AirPods without their case in the steamy shower box. I'm sure no water got inside, but it looks like the steam made this small piece of fabric lose its sound-passing capability.
If anyone else found that this didn't work, here's a few things to try. I did them all but don't know which worked :') ~ used air pump to clear the mics ~ connected them to another device (android) and tested them (they worked) ~ forced restarted my phone and connected them Good luck :)

Question once you remove the mesh is there anyway we can get something to replace that? At least to give the microphone protection, i figure that if you keep using them on regular basis stuff can go in there and make it worse?
To those who have tried resetting your phone and headset and still have a problem on your microphone when on a call. This is the perfect solution. It works perfectly. You might be worried because the protection on your mic is lost so better do it on just ONE earphone. 🤪 Lol Atleast if it will cause damage you still got the spare one. I might try remove the other peace once I am sure it no effect on the performance.
Not 100 percent sure but I think he removed the noise reduction pad (for wind and back ground noise) along with the mesh cover to protect it, I don’t think those are supposed to come out.
@Anthony Oddo who said I’m mad? I’ just saying they are taking our hard earned money and then sell us products that are beautiful (can’t argue with that) but waaaay overpriced for the quality we are paying for. For example, you cant clean the microphone without ruining the mesh, and when you ruin the mesh more dust will stick there because the mesh is like glue and when you take it off then there is plastic thing that is revolutionary 😂. Its 0.000000000000001 cent worth of revolution. And by the way, it fixed the problem for a while. Im loosing the sound even after this “fix”. Heard that only 2nd gen airpods are having this type of problem.
This worked for me omg. Yes, indeed you are damaging the airpod, but it didnt worked in the first place, and apple doesnt repair them. But now they work again, maybe they will do just for a while, but its a win for me. Thanks!
So stoked this worked for me. I used a thick sewing needle. My girlfriend washed them and mic wasn’t working so she bought new ones. Now have a pair of working airpods!

I did this and the microphone worked for me too. I definitely pulled out the film and a bit of wire mesh stuff. Don’t know how this is going to effect the mic over time but they went from not working at all to working so idc 😂
Quick question is it bad that you can see the white part on the bottom? Of the airpods because one of them is like that (right one) and the other one isn’t(left one) the right one sounds glitchy and muffled when I voice record but then the right one sound perfectly fine…I don’t know if they are broken
My airpods was only picking up scratching sounds so I asked the repair guy. They said it could not be repaired anymore. Tried this out just in case and IT WORKED!!! hahahahahaha initially I panicked because the mesh ripped out but it's better than airpods that don't work LOL
You can tell the corrosion on the mesh. You might be able to buy a screen and put a new one on there. going to look at another video before tearing this one apart.
