  • Time for a long overdue look at the state of our house roof. A new roof has been on the cards for a few years but just keeps being put off having seen this, it's got to jump the list.

      It’s not always glamorous doing things properly I guess, it is a little annoying when you see other channels just flying drones around in every video without the correct procedures or permissions. But that said, it’s not taken likely by CAA and got to think of risk to our business and livelihood. 👍

    Quick tip if you angle grind any of the gutters...wash down ALL your windows and cills immediately after. The metal filings from the grinder rust quickly and if left will spoil your nice slider windows.

    Great video. Currently having the roof on my house re-slated. It's in N Wales and Penrhyn Quarry is just down the road, but have gone with Spanish slate due to cost (Spanish on the back, reclaimed Welsh on the front - the good slates that were taken off the roof). I totally agree with the barge boards - just waiting for the roofer to finish, so I put up some decent, nicely shaped boards. Like you, I've got an issue with board length - my max run is ~6m. I'll give cedar a look - had been thinking of iroko or accoya. My cast iron gutters have long since gone - considering galvanised steel to replace the tatty plastic that is currently up there.

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  Před 4 lety

      I had hoped to use accoya however it would mean a joint somewhere, which could be done on the purlin end but still a risk. There is a good chance that our roof came from that quarry or somewhere else nearby I guess. It is a shame that there is such a premium for UK slate but the Spanish seems to be the next best thing.

    • @garethd4948
      @garethd4948 Před 4 lety

      @@TheRestorationCouple Out of interest, what size are you barge boards? The boards I'll be replacing come in a couple of widths; they are ~195mm and ~260mm wide (lengths of 3.5m (195mm wide), 3.8m and 6m (both 260mm wide)). I've struggled to find single pieces wider than 220mm (most top out around 200mm). I've found some PAR iroko at 260mm wide. I'll be jointing the long boards on a purlin end - the original boards were jointed there too. Just wondering if I've missed a sitter?

    Crazy to even think about re slating that roof imo . I dont think it's possible to replace like for like with the quality of slate that's up there already ...new barge boards ,soffit, gutters flashings etc and ridge tiles rebedding ofcourse. I didn't see the complete video nor did read all comments. But for your wall with the old plant and roots inside the wall, algae, etc. you should find someone who can dry ice your wall. With these deep cold temperatures it is easy possible to remove said plants and stuff without damaging the old wall like high pressure water cleaning would do.

    I bought some spanish slates, your size, back in June. TP did them for £1.14 inc vat each... I was only doing a 18sq.Metre porch, so you could get a better deal for 100sq Metres easily :)

  • @jonesynet
    @jonesynet Před 4 lety +2

    If a reclamation yard can see enough potential in the slates to re-sell them, why aren't you refurbing and re-fitting?. Seems a better plan, conservation-wise.

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  Před 4 lety +6

      It was the original plan. However we are only expecting 20-30% that can be saved, possibly less and their remaining life will be far less than new. Plus we would be unlikely to be able to tie in ‘new’ salvaged slates to match for a consistent looking roof. The important part is that we won’t be just skipping the lot and I’m sure I’ll be stashing away a few for future projects of my own.

      Graham, hope this helps your choice.....I have all keylite x 8 on my roof. Way cheaper than Velux at the time, never given us an issue other than one of the built in blinds(between the glass) got stuck. Keylite came out and replaced the entire unit. Windows in 5 years now and apart from that wee blimp all good. Would recommend for sure, velux are way over priced for what they are..... just my opinion 👍

    • @paulthewitt
      @paulthewitt Před 4 lety

      I have just done mine - 1x sunlux in the bathroom. Much cheaper and obviously not as nice, but fine... and top hung escape which I wanted.
      Keylite for the big one. Easily the best to fit and clearest instructions- aside for the different pamphlets not blending well so put some on to them take off wasting 20 minutes.
      Final one fakro - was a blend between the two. Way better than sunlux, way less clear than keylite. But the preselect option is pretty cool.
      Velux was way too costly to be an option. The keylite was a Black Friday buy and fakro was clearance. If you have the money, go keylite.
      If you go something else, don’t forget to buy the thermal collar too, not just the under felt. (Tip - the velux bdx ones fit the fakro and sunlux)
      All were pvc/coated btw

    For non commercial use (in the UK), you can get the CAA drone licence by doing a simple multiple choice test, and paying a small fee. You're not allowed to fly over houses, unless it's your own. No need for insurance or other things. You should definitely read all the relevant regulations, and learn to fly away from people/buildings. Source: I have the non-comercial drone licence (technically Flyer ID and Operator ID). You can find all the relevant info on the CAA web site register-drones.caa.co.uk/individual

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  Před 4 lety +1

      Not sure that is what you would call a license as it is a legal requirement now for anyone flying a drone of this size, it is just a quick check test and register for ID number. It wouldn’t allow you to fly over your own house unless you were away from a built up area and people, and not at a roof level. Even if we were in the middle of nowhere, using any footage in our videos would result in need for PfCO anyway. Insurance good practice even if just recreational, not expensive and pay as you go apps are a good option. 👍

    • @boatsuk
      @boatsuk Před 4 lety

      @@TheRestorationCouple Yeah, it's not actually called licence (my bad).
      Anyway, the important part is here register-drones.caa.co.uk/drone-code/where-you-can-fly under "Buildings, structures, vehicles, trains, boats and other types of transport" it clearly says "Does not apply to those you own or where the owner has given you permission to fly closer."
      So if you have a drone, and the proper Operator ID/Flyer ID from the CAA, you can fly it within your property boundaries (or someone else's property if the owner gives you permission).

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  Před 4 lety

      @@boatsuk Correct, however that would only apply if you had no neighbours and/or you were 150m away from any residential or built up area. i.e you could be directly above your house but likely to be within proximity of others. In addition, unless you are not in a built up area you would be unable to fly anyway as 150m would be too high even if directly above your house. I did read that at the time the ID register came out and thought it was confusing.
