  • 99 Red Balloons by Goldfinger with lyrics + german! :D
Personally, this is my favorite version of the song :)
    German translation (from Google translations):
    99 Secretary of War
    Matches and gasoline canisters
Professing themselves to be smart people
Already weathered fat and easy prey
Shouted the war and wanted power
    Man who would have thought
    That even if it comes
    Because of 99 balloons
**I do not own the song

I looked up both original versions(german and english) and I got to say that this is the best version storywise. The original german version pretty much has no real story. It never establishes where the ballons come from. The ballons were also mistaken for ufos of all things, which by all accounts does not make much sense later in the song because the german part here comes from that version and says that the warministers wanted power. So, they just took this possible alien threat as an excuse to start a world war? What?
Basically, this is mostly the english version with a german part swapped in. The part that was swapped out was about warplanes and everyone being a hero like captain kirk during the moment which is kinda just fluff towards soldiers going along with it I think. A similar thing was earlier in the german version earlier. The german part meanwhile is someone looking back on the event basically and saying indirectly that what these guys did by ordering the war was stupid.
Also, the last sentence is the same in both versions. In the german version, it comes out of nowhere because it was about a random survivor who lost someone in the war. The english version establishes the two to be the ones who started it with the ballons, says that the survivors dreams were about ballons(which might be why they were bought to begin with) and it talks about wanting to find anything that survived the mess, which makes it more impactful that they let the ballon go because that is basically what they were looking for.

It's a song (originally) about balloons being released in west Germany. Jets getting scrambled to shoot them down because they've been mistaken for UFOs. The pilots realize it's just balloons. and shoot them down for a little fun. East Germany gets nervous from this unprovoked display of power and they go into a 99 year war which ends in a nuclear holocaust.
English translation is more poetic and called silly by the original german artists. It's about an anonymous pair of people who fill helium balloons and release them into the sky. due to a radar glitch. they appear as enemy planes. Holocaust ensues. and the anonymous survivor sorrowfully walks through the wreckage. With thoughts of the other person and what happened.
The song was made as a protest to NATOs nuclear missile treaties. And the overall message is that simply. Nuclear missiles cause nothing but pain, stress, and agony over very little things. and if they were destroyed things would be much simpler and less scary for all involved.

    • @monicalewinskythedidnots1079
      @monicalewinskythedidnots1079 Před 8 lety +12

+Jax dax Well, "air balloons" is redundant in English (unless talking about hot-air balloons) so we would just say 99 Balloons. But when Nena put out an English version of 99 Luftballons , the song was renamed "99 Red Balloons" and the original lyrics were largely discarded. Most of the lyrics in this song are from that changed English version (not a translation of the original German lyrics).
As to why the original lyrics were heavily changed in the English recording, wikipedia says : The title "99 Red Balloons" almost scans correctly with the syllables falling in the right places within the rhythm of the first line of lyrics: "red" partially replacing a flourish of the singer before "Luft". Neunundneunzig (99) has one syllable more than "ninety-nine", so the last syllable and "luft" are blended in the English translation and become "red".

Can we all agree that this song has a very dark premise?
It starts out nice, with two kids or a couple letting off 99 red balloons, then the military mistakes it for an enemy raid, most likely german, and causes a destructive event, leaving the couple in the remains, or only one of them alive.
kinda screwed up when you think about it...

emily no Someone buys balloons in a store, lets them go up up up and away into the sky - but due to a glitch the military sees the balloons on their radar as something else. They think they are missiles or something and are about to start a global nuclear war. And in this day and age, once one person launches a nuke, the other person is going to launch a nuke in retaliation and then another and another and then everyones dead. Pretty grim! :) i thought it was a fun song haha

With you not knowing the lyrics, do you mean the german version? If yes, then the lyrics are actually pretty diffrent between versions.
