  • "Don't tell my wife that I got injured during this game." A real statement made by a quarterback after a game in a completely non-joking manner.
In week 9 of the 1969 AFL season, the New York Jets played the Buffalo Bills, and Bills starting quarterback Dan Darragh got injured during the game with a separated shoulder. And after the injury, Darragh had a rather bizarre request to NBC, the network broadcasting the game.

"Initial reports on Dan Darragh is a deep bone bruise and he will be out for the rest of the game. Back to you, Curt."
Then he goes home and explain to her what happened and she can see he's going to be alright.
That's a much better scenario than her seeing that report on TV and left worrying.
It's not that he was trying to keep it from his wife from ever finding out. He's just trying to keep her from finding out at that time and in that way.
You've obviously never had a pregnant wife.

Not the first time you did a video with this date (11/9/69). This was the same day as the 31-31 tie between the Bengals and Oilers which you talked about in another video..

I wonder where that preseason game against the Lions was played since it looked like it was played on AstroTurf and neither War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo nor Tiger Stadium in Detroit ever had AstroTurf.

Oddly enough, not the first time you’ve referenced the phrase about a blind squirrel finding a nut, as you did a video several months back about the Diamondbacks’ Kelly Stinnett using the phrase in regards to hitting a home run off Kerry Wood, and USA Today misconstrued that as *Wood* saying that about Stinnett.

The Bills have had quite a number of bad QBs in their history. Gary Marangi, Bruce Mathison, Matt Kofler, Joe Dufek, and Dennis Shaw come to mind.

With all due respect Billy Joe Hobert was the worst QB in Bills history. At least Darragh actually played multiple games and even won one. Go check out the story of BJ Hobert. The guy never even opened the playbook once.

Darragh's wife was gonna know something happened to him due to either wearing a sling or having the arm attached to said shoulder dangling. Darragh clearly didn't think this through, which might be why he was such a scrub on the field. I couldn't stop laughing when I was watching most of this!

Darragh was pretty bad, but was he worse than Gary Marangi? Marangi was a third round pick so I imagine he was expected to do something besides post an 0-7 lifetime record and a lifetime passer rating of 36.1.

Put in arunningback and he did well,
Not enough to help his team. Am I

The majority of Buffalo's games were started by backup quarterback Dan Darragh, after injuries claimed the seasons of long-time starter Jack Kemp and new addition Tom Flores. Even Darragh and new addition Kay Stephenson were injured. Ultimately, running back Ed Rutkowski, who hadn't played the quarterback position since college six years prior, ended up starting at quarterback for the Bills.

    • @jimmderby5772
      @jimmderby5772 Před 10 měsíci

Ed Rutkowski started 3 games in '68 and lost all 3. He's listed as QB-HB-SE-WR and somehow received 2 votes for AFL Player of the Year--probably from his wife and Dan Darragh's wife--which was twice as many as Don Maynard got. And then he immediately retired on the top of his game.

I'm surprised that Darragh was smart enough to understand the playbook. Or maybe he wasn't, and that's why he was so bad.
