SUPER EASY DRY LAWN FIX! REALLY… BABY SHAMPOO FOR LAWN?!?

- When it comes to your lawn and lack of water for a period of time, you will start to see some hydrophobic areas form within your lawn. This can be as simple as watering once a week, hardly any moisture over a winter, or a combination of a few different things of compaction and dry soil. So what you Gotta do is pay attention as spring is starting to go in full swing for people, and people are starting to turn on the sprinkler systems and use them. Because of the lack of water overtime you could be seeing some dry spots, some steel gray areas of grass where your lawn has gone hydrophobic. Using baby shampoo in these areas will open it up, allow drainage, and wake the grass back up. The nice thing about it is, it allows water to get deeper into the soil and roots can chase after this deeper water source, helping us with drought tolerance during the summer.

Did mine this year and what a massive difference it made. you can tell when you walk on it. Before even after watering the ground felt really hard. Now it has a slight sponginess to it even days after any type of rain or watering.
Cheap and magical for sure! No reason not to do it 💯
I've just ordered the Spreader Sticker. I have a two-gallon pump sprayer, so is the right proportion two ounces of Sticker per two gallons of water. Thanks for everything. I can't wait to try this.

Spring is notorious for having hydrophobic soils! Help it get back in there!
This is my favorite application because it smells so good. Bonus tip - when you fill the container with water, don't spray the water into the container. Natural, slow flow from the hose. Avoid creating tons of bubbles created by the shampoo.
That’s the fun part.. I love bubble baths and enjoying a bubbles coming out. lol normally I do it over a bad spot so it gets a little bump in that area. 👌🏻
How often would you apply baby shampoo to the lawn weekly? Soil here in Colorado is hard with a lot of clay where I live.
I do this but I’ll often use liquid sea kelp in place of the water in the tank. Adds extra fertilizer
While I’m good with this technique working for
You, I wouldn’t recommend others trying it. Sea kelp is a growth hormone, and with testing and varieties / concentrations I have used and world with can cause cells to rupture.
After writing this , let me ask ya… how many oz of kelp are you using across how big of an area? Maybe I’m thinking your using way more then you really are lol
Thank you so much for this helpful video, my lawn definitely has this problem and I'm going to do this next weekend! Can I just do this treatment once a year? Curious how often it should be done!
Baby shampoo lasts about 3-4 weeks in the soil. To keep it open, make sure you address the water coverage as it cold be off.
@@TheGreenerLawn got it, thank you!
I just finished my overseeding project
here in Ontario as the temperatures
not too hot the forecast for the next 2
weeks is pretty mild during the day
and cooler nights so hopefully I can
get the germination to work. I cut the
grass shorter then I usually have it at,
detached the dead grass out, aerate
the lawn with my pitch fork… lol, put
on the Scott's starter fertilizer, then
started to overseed with peet moss
on top. Yes quite a day but that's the
process I use to hopefully get
satisfactory results.
Quick question after all this… using
the Dawn dish soap I applied it just
before this entire project, would it be
any good to apply the Dawn dish soap
on all the Peet moss with seeds right
now? To help germinate or help with
soil or best to just use regular water in?
Sorry, no clue why I got this this late, but don’t use it with seed, it can hinder growth , wait till the seed is 3 cuts in.
Incidentally I have to spray for bugs and pests on my lawn. Should I do this baby shampoo treatment after I do that or does it matter? Also is there a product or natural way to spray for bugs that won't mess up my dogs or the lawn? The bug spray I bought doesn't specify if it's bad for pets or not. Thanks
I am going to start doing this a few times a year. Sounds like this will be a really good thing to do in dry years. In the hot summers, (like last year) do you water more than one time a week?
Above 95 I normally did 2x, this year, will not tho. 👌🏻
Great video!! We just added more grass seed to overseed our lawn. We thought our lawn was just dying from the heat (So Cal). Can this be sprayed on top of seed?
I’ve used it with success. Use it in the dry patchy areas!

Will this help tall fescue lawn in the mid-atlantic that has fungus and brown spot issues? Lawn was treated several times by landscaping company for fungus and brown spot in the spring/summer but not totally going away. Thanks for any advice or info you can provide. Or if you have any advice/info for diy home to get rid of lawn fungus and brown spot. Tired of dealing with and paying company with no results.
To deal with fungus effectively, putting stronger grass cultivars helps the most. Then minimizing disease pressures we can control, watering, fertilizer, mowing ect.
So crazy enough, if it’s over weathering or too much water, baby shampoo can help flush the soil quicker slowing water to drain and no pool, helping to defeat fungus pressure.
But the other things above are the true fix.
How often do you water? How long do you water? How much rain do you get? How old is your grass seed?
Can I apply this now,
I’m planing on applying humic, 0-0-25 potassium and propiconazole 14.3. Not sure if to apply the baby shampoo first or do my liquid fertilizer first
Ahh this makes more sense on Instagram now. Yes, you can apply now and there isn’t any issue with the other stuff.
A year later and it still works
💯 my friend! Thanks for keeping everyone posted!
Hey i live in the north east and have winter cold grass. Can i overseed my grass a day after applying the liquid aeration or should i wait? Thanks!
No issues at all. Just refrain from using it in baby grass, as it can cause it to be susceptible to disease or issues (up till the 3rd mow of the new grass).
Hey bud good video. Interesting. So are you saying that baby shampoo can replace soil wetter? If so would be way cheaper. Hello from Australia.
Yes, for sure! This will definitely replace that at last 3 to 4 weeks is all, but 3 to 4 weeks and a super easy application. I love Australia I can’t wait to visit.
Thanks for the video! Does Hydretain do the same thing?
No hydrate actually retains the moisture down in the soil, by creating a moisture barrier as the water goes to evaporate it stops it at that later this baby shampoo just opens up the swale to allow it to drain and get moisture down deeper into the soil.
Thanks for the video. What is the best time of day to apply this? Also, do u have to use plain water applying the shampoo? Thanks for any replies! Enjoyed your video.
Rod, there isn’t a time that matters. Maybe your comfort is most key, so your not dying in the heat.
Elaborate on what you mean use plain water to apply? I’m a little confused
@@TheGreenerLawn Thanks for the reply. Plain water is just water without the shampoo. Sorry about that. I saw in your video u watered the lawn with water only after spraying it with the shampoo. So my question was answered. Thanks
I am also in 7B,Delaware bay side of cape may. I think I have residual Bermuda grass in trying to revive. Summer is very hot and dry, the storms coming across the bay almost always breakup and hardly rains to the point there are small cactuses around the area. How can i contact you to make sure I'm on the right track to reviving this lawn?

Does this apply to tropical weather also? Puerto Rico to be precise.
Yup, will work the same anywhere it’s not frozen
Would Dawn dish soap do the same thing?
Yup, just make sure it’s not anti microbial or anti bacterial and just regular scent. 👌🏻
How long did you spray ? (or do you watch to see when you run out of baby shampoo in the cup??) also now that it’s June and we’re hitting 88 to 90° here in Greenville SC. When would you suggest that I apply this and water since I normally water in the mornings like 6 AM?
Just apply the night before. Yup just spray it all out, till gone
How often does this need to be done? I have a few spots that this will help in, but I don’t want to overdo it.
Shampoo = 3-4 weeks
Sticker 4-8 weeks
Would you suggest using a pump sprayer? I have a nice one but don’t want it to have shampoo in it regardless how many times you rinse it.
Shampoo for lawn apps or herbicides and stuff doesn’t hurt anything. A lot of them it actually enhances the effects. Several herbicides call for surfactant and that’s what baby shampoo is a surfactant. Pump sprayers are OK but you will need to run your water to push it into the soil using an ortho like this just has the water so that it pushes it in quicker. But yes you definitely can you just have to either alignment with the storm or water it in.
@@TheGreenerLawn Ok awesome. Thanks for the quick response.
Pump spraying is brutal. Takes too long because you are supposed to wet the lawn After applying it. so it’s like doing 2 applications. Use the sprayer and save time and energy. Let it mix for you one and done. Learned this the hard way myself on a huge lawn. If it’s small that’s another story.
I’m in Savannah Georgia we have centipede grass here how often can I do this to my lawn.
For hydrophobic lawns you will do it every 3 weeks. But weekly will not hurt.
Thanks
Can i use any dish soap or it has to be JJ baby shampoo? What is the most important ingredient i should be checking on label?
Dish soap with OUT antibacterial or antimicrobial agents is good.
Most common is laurel sulphate, but anything that is a surfactant, thus breaks bonds to release dirt from hair / skin / grease off pans/ ect; works well.

So it’s going to get the moisture down deep, have you ran a cup test on your lawn to make sure your watering is dialed in?
How much rain do you get?
@@TheGreenerLawn not much rain, and I have made an effort to water less this year. I will run the cup test this week as temps should be in the 90’s.

How often can one apply this solution? Is it ok to use as a surfactant along with the chemical application?
What chemical application?
Depends on issue:
Dog pee weekly
Hydrophobic soil 3 weeks
General purpose: 3 weeks
Ok sorry one more question. I bought Hydretain but it's coming in the mail. Should I use baby shampoo now? or after Hydretain? Btw I live in North Salt Lake if that matters at all.
B4 so the hydretain can get into the soil. If it is hydrophobic and you apply it will hold moisture on the surface of the soil vs down below.

If we don’t own a hose end sprayer how else do you suggest applying it?
Bucket with water and baby shampoo,
Or pump sprayer work.

Just came back from the stores. Actually checked 3 stores. Didn't see any that stated anything about being anti microbial or anti bacterial. Seems all the Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo and wash & shampoo I found say No paragons, phthalates, sulfates of dyes. Is this what you use? Can you share what the actual label says on the one you use.. Appreciate it! Thanks.
The antimicrobial and antibacterial is for
Dish soap, they will not put those in baby shampoo. So any baby soooo any baby shampoo is safe for for your lawn. Sorry for confusion!
Do you think this method can be applied to one year old sod?
Yup, only seed struggles slightly with baby shampoo.
I am leaking a comment! Haha thank you for all the great tips 😁
Leaking issues all over the place… 🙄
Any benefit of doing this this late in the summer season? Should I wait for early fall?
Any time the soil is hard, not letting drainage happen, or hydrophobic. So any time is good. I just made this video in spring… that’s the winter reference.
Can I apply this in temperatures over 100°?
@@Chicadee713 no wrong time, but in the heat is prime time as it gets moisture deeper into
The soil for ya.
Will the bottle drain so you know its done?.I tried just soap and it didnt work really great .I guess I should have added water.
Water is a must lol add the water fist and then the soap.
Do you stir it up when you put the water in the jug with the shampoo?.
If you were using the ortho hose sprayer, normally it mixes it for you. Just add the water in the jug first add the baby shampoo in there and it will mix itself up at that point.
Can you apply this baby shampoo anytime of the year?
Yes 100! Anytime not frozen
Should you do this before or after you mow?
Will not effect it either way, so what ever is convenient for you.
I would wait a day after mowing so the soap goes into the lawn and does not get removed with the cuttings.
Can you use surfactant if you don’t have baby shampoo?
Yup for sure! What you got?
Awesome tip! What growing zone are you in?

How often should you apply the baby lotion?
Shampoo, depending on what issue your facing can be applied every week for dog pee spots or fertilizer burn to every 4 weeks for hydrophobic soils, that watering coverage is struggling to fix

About how long will it take to see results? thanks!
So it depends on how much water you use behind it the more water you use the quicker the results as it will open it up and allow the water to go deeper quicker. A few minutes you should be able to get a screwdriver down deeper into the soil. If you don’t use a lot of water as you water, it will work its way down over subsequent waterings.

lol. It’s a filler and it actually helps the flow of a video, if done correctly it helps engagement, but for a certain few like your self, it can be distracting and I get it. I EDIT this for the majority, and unfortunately for select individuals it’s not going to be their thing. It’s like a movie, there is music in them, and you prob don’t realize it half the time but it connects scenes and gives a filler for our minds to gravitate to. This is the same as going to a mall where they have background music playing or a restaurant. Not intended for you to “listen to”, but a filler for our brains and it keeps us focused better in all reality, IF they don’t have it blasting.
Way more than you signed up for on this, but there is no way people will “do something with the music”, it’s a proven fact that it helps majority of people. I personally am sorry it distracted you tho.

Did I miss it? Was there an explanation of how this works technically?
Technically no, I just present things that work. But for you, it’s a surfactant that breaks the bond in the soil. Similar to how baby shampoo releases dirt from our skin, it allows the water to penetrate areas that have gone hydrophobic (Hydrophobic means lacking an affinity for water; insoluble in water; repelling water).
If you want a scientific explanation look up penetrants / wetting agents. Then research laurel sulphate and how it works. 🫡 hope this helps?
Is too much soap bad?
The concentrations are super high, if you dilute it with water at all, you’ll be totally fine
Does it have to be baby shampoo or any shampoo?
So what we don’t want is anything that kills microbes / bacterial. Those will hurt the soil. Baby shampoo is super gentle as it’s for babies heads. You can use dish soap, but make sure it’s NOT antimicrobial or antibacterial

Anyways, awesome to see you think outside the box, but it will not do anything to a grub. It’s a penetrant, for a hydrophobic soil. I took this form golf courses using pro surfactants, and grabbed the root laurel sulphate, to apply to soils so they open up , and flush.
