  • Just outside the city of Asheville, North Carolina, lies an American landmark - The Biltmore. The Vanderbilt family built their sprawling estate in the late 1800s. Not only is this magnificent property reminiscent of Downton Abby, it houses the most visited winery in the country. Next, Leslie Sbroccp heads downtown to sample Asheville's vibrant and growing beer brewing industry. Combined with North Carolina’s BBQ pork, it’s a winning combination. Leslie hikes off the calories in the area’s stunning state parks where movies like The Hunger Games and Dirty Dancing were filmed.

I'm lucky to live just 40 minutes from Asheville just across the Tennessee state line. If you want a unique dining experience, this is where you go. This is a beautiful area any time of the year but mid October with the fall colors is nothing short of spectacular.

@@kqed ... Gourmet & Company, Label Restaurant, Cootie Brown's and Label Restaurant all in Johnson City,TN. A local favorite for BBQ would be Ridgewood BBQ in nearby Bluff City, TN.

HI Leslie, thanks for your show highlighting local restaurants and inviting community people as guests. I appreciate the diversity of people you include on your show. I watched "Exploring Asheville" last evening and was sad and troubled that in all of the wonderful people, history and food that you featured that people of color were not visible anywhere. We know that so much of North Carolina and the wealth of the people and establishments you highlighted were built by the labor of Black and other laborers of color over generations. We also know that the food tradition in North Carolina was deeply influenced by Black chefs and cooks. We have a horrendous history in this country of making people of color, their contributions, their labor, their subjugation, their wisdom and their intelligence invisible. I encourage you to work to abandon this silence and take every opportunity to make visible what has been implicitly and explicitly invisible to the people who have held the power in our country. I'm happy to discuss this further with you.
