  • Hello and welcome to a new series, BMBC are a joke! In this series I am going to expose things that Barnsley Council are (not) doing for its tax paying residents. This first example is a pavement on Wakefield Road, where the concrete paving slabs are cracks and uneven. This is causing a problem for Becky, my partner, as she has Rheumatoid Arthritis, and needs to use the mobility scooter to access the shops and doctors at New Lodge. We have my scooter, a Cabin Car mk2, and Becky’s, a folding boot scooter. I have the cabin car because I have mobility issues because of my back, and it’s enclosed because I have anxiety in crowded areas such as town centre, but that’s not relevant here. What is relevant however, is the disgusting state of the pavement that BMBC are responsible for. Not only is this a trip hazard, but the feedback you get through the tiller is so bad it’s shaking the entire car and jolting my hands and arms. While for me is in an inconvenience at best, it could cause me to lose control and crash into someone. As for Becky, it is much more of an issue due to her arthritis and the fact her scooter is much smaller as she doesn’t like the big one. She has said that she’s nearly fallen off due to the state of the pavement and dreads having to go to the shops anymore. This is wrong considering there has been an increase in council tax this year and more should be done to improve the roads and pavements before someone gets seriously hurt!

The trans penine trail and assosiated paths are now totally inaccesable to people on mobility scooters having been blocked with concrete slabs and gates that a mobility scooter cannot fit through
As is dearn vally country park , BMBC and south yorkshire police are so inept at stopping off road motorbikes they have resorted to blocking disabled access to these places and many others,
The irony is that while the disabled can not use these places off road bikes still get through,
The tpt and parks should be accesable to all legal users including mobility scooter users sadly this is no longer the case in the barnsley area.
