  • After a few years absence, the Giants of Steam event returned to the calendar for the Bluebell Railway. The gala is renowned for showcasing 'giants' of the steam era, and on this occasion was no exception. The gala featured an intensive timetable of 4 trains running between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead with 5 locos in operation on Saturday and 4 on Sunday.
The gala saw the introduction into service following overhaul of BR Standard 5 No 73082 'Camelot' which was making it's first public runs over the weekend. Joining The resident locos from the Mid Hants was SR Schools Class No 925 'Cheltenham' to add to the distinctly Southern line up and feel of the line.
The second guest had originally planned to be BR Standard 7MT No 70000 'Britannia', but with less than a week to go it failed its fitness to run examination and was pulled from the event. Luckily Jeremy Hosking and the Mid Hants stepped in with LNER A4 No 4464 'Bittern' as its replacement. This meant that not only would this see the first A4 on the Bluebell Railway in preservation, but it would also see the final runs of 'Bittern' prior to overhaul after 8 years in service, with its last run from East Grinstead to Sheffield Park on Sunday evening.
The weather over the weekend was a mixed bag of sunshine on the Saturday, and fog on the Sunday, with most of the line being covered for large parts of the day.
The full loco line up was:
    | LNER A4 No 4464 'Bittern'
    | SR Schools Class No 925 'Cheltenham'
    | BR 5MT No 73082 'Camelot'
    | SR S15 Class No 847
    | SR Q Class No 30541

Great video but the first 2 minutes are the best. They really evoke memories of steam on shed in the 'good old days'!

Much enjoyed, thanks, with a thoughtful variety of locations and event coverage. Very atmospheric in the mist early on and I particularly liked your shot at 14:00. Kind regards, Bob K.

Great shots here :) Was such a great gala. Was with you at Kingscote filming the shot as Bittern rolled in Northbound on Saturday.

Looks like a few steam leaks around the cylinders on 73082 could do with a bit of tightening, but a very nice job they've made of it. Lovely shot against the light @ 10:50.

In your blurb you make it sound like Camelot's never run on Bluebell metals before! Some small snippet-ty videos from my steamy side could be online in a few days time...could be! ...You see that's not a promise! MS=
