      @@lta4615 OBITUARY: THE SAD PASSING OF COMMON SENSE
      Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
      He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned, but overbearing, regulations were set in place.
      Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, teenagers suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they had themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer paracetamol, sun lotion or plaster to a pupil, but could not inform the parents when a pupil became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
      Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home, but the burglar could sue you for assault because you protected yourself and your own.
      Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
      Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion, his daughter, Responsibility and his son, Reason. He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm A Victim.
      Not many attended his funeral because so few realised that he was gone.
      If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

    What blows me away is it is THIS man who's name SHOULD be held up - by EVERYONE - as an example of 'moving ahead.'
    Instead, almost no one - white - or ESP. black - knows of him.
    They 'hold up' morons - rappers, sports figures, video games, etc. as '(positive) influences.'
    'Knowledge IS power.'
    For millennia, education - reading, etc. - was only for the privileged - the royalty, religious, etc.
    Today - in most first-wordl, second, and, in some third-world countries - CAN GO to SCHOOL, get an EDUCATION.
    The dropout rate (esp. amongst minorities) is deplorable.
    They don't think an education is 'their ticket' to 'success.'
    The media isn't 'innocent' - holding up exaggerated images of 'wealth.'
    Mr. Lewis is a role model 2 me (I'm white), and, I didn't kno of him growing up, but, I DID kno what Beatrice, LTD was.
    This is a man who shows ANYONE CAN SUCCED.
    NOT through any 'get-rich-gquick' nonsense.
    NOT through (fantasies of) becoming a; music, sports, celebrity.
    But - through EDUCATION. HARD WORK.
    This is a man to b ADMIRED. This is a man who should be MUCH better-known than he (unfortunately) is.
    I try - in my own way - to 'spread the word' of Mr. Lewis.
    Life is NOT 'easy' - for anyone.
    Like I said, I'm white, and it saddens/sickens me when I've heard 'bout kids (usually black kids) who were looked as 'sell-outs' for getting an education.
    Don't listen to ANYONE who tries to tell you school is for ... whatever. They're NOT going to support you, or help you.
    I urge EVERYONE - black, white, etc; GO TO SCHOOL.
    NEVER let ANYONE tell you otherwise. Stay in school.
    Become tomorrows 'Reginald Lewis'. You CAN!

    • @UNOwen1
      @UNOwen1 Před 10 lety +2

      Society's been obsessed with acquiring things - and not necessarily what must be done to acquire the things -be it in education or work.
      Mr. Lewis is such a role model - to people of all colours, and it's so saddens me that there's not much interest in promoting him and how he became the success he did.

    • @UNOwen1
      @UNOwen1 Před 10 lety +1

      ***** Let's be clear. I'm terribly disheartened to hear such news as you say. But, let's separate THIS from the other issues you mentioned.
      One does NOT have ANY impact/reflection on another.
      I could sit and argue w/ you how your point is (VERY) wrong, but, that only wastes time.
      What IS needed is this museum - it's rang the 'African-American Museum (?) is closing down? Where is it? Has anyone started a Kickstarter campaign to help raise money?
      If we met, I couldn't hide the fact I'm white.
      I don't care what color someone is - it's the person.
      We're all born alone and die alone. It's what we do in the interim - our lives - which matter - for us, as well as those we love & care about.
      I see you posted this a month ago (it's 13 March, '14), what's going on with the museum?
      Listen: I always felt that if I didn't see anyone else DOING SOMETHING 'bout an issue I felt important, I'd DO IT MYSELF.
      What have YOU done?
      I'm willing to help.
      I can't start anything to help save this museum - if still possible, BUT, DON'T WAIT FOR OTHERS - YOU take the situation, and YOU LEAD.
      I'm very serious about helping.

    • @UNOwen1
      @UNOwen1 Před 10 lety +1

      Like I said, I'm willing to help - I'm sure many others are.
      The problem I have is I don't know where it is.
      The people - from the city where it is - they need to have their eyes OPENED - about IT, AND Mr. Lewis.
      A Kickstarter campaign, calling the local stations...SOMEONE (hint, hint) needs to 'rattle the tree' - WAKE people UP.
      If people aren't aware, they're not going to help - but, ONLY because they don't KNOW of it.
      I'm in NYC (and LA, and...overseas when I can), but, pls keep me updated - and HELP get the word out.
      Personally, I'm a 'take-charge' type (some people think that's 'annoying' - screw 'em, if they're not doing it, right?), so - become a take-charge person yourself.
      Yes, it CAN be tiring, but, if you bring others in, they'll help you with it, and - in the end - it's a really nice feeling one gets, JUST from helping.
