Gregory Peck! Robert Mitchum! Paul Newman! Jack Palance! My Leading Men with Dame Joan Collins!

  • Superstar Joan Collins remembers her pre-"Dynasty" days as a western leading lady to good guy Gregory Peck in "The Bravados" and her adventures as a Euro-western star with bad guy Jack Palance. Plus, tough guy Robert Mitchum and smooth as silk Paul Newman are recalled. As a Hollywood starlet and contract player in the 1950s, British actress Joan Collins was given horseback riding lessons. Could she ride? Find out from Joan as she remembers Peck's riding tips and her dangerous location trip to Mexico.
Joan starred in another western called “The Great Adventure” starring Jack Palance and shot in Spain. How does the rough handling she received from Palance compare the tough guy acting style of icon Robert Mitchum in “The Big Sleep?” With lots of leading men over the years, who was Joan’s favorite?
When Dame Joan joined the cast of "Dynasty," the ratings took a huge leap! Was it those dangerous shenanigans between Joan and Linda Evans that made "Dynasty" among the most watched shows on television. Find out from the grand Dame herself in this lively, revealing, and extended conversation with Joan and producer Rob Word from 2015 filmed at The Autry Museum.

The story of Jack Palance's missing loot reminded me of press coverage for another movie (not a western) shot at the start of the 1980s - the notorious big-budget bomb "Inchon", directed by Bond film veteran Terence Young (who also made the Charles Bronson western "Red Sun"). Production ran over schedule and various cast and crew members either hadn't been paid on time or were due pay, so the film's producer would just show up on set with either bags or suitcases full of cash to be handed out on the spot. Laurence Olivier played General Douglas MacArthur, and supposedly received weekly bonuses - briefcases full of money - on location.

Always loved Dynasty, even though I'm much more a Western fan, and you are right about how introducing the "Bi***h/ I mean Vixen," it made the show a lot more irresistible. No disrespect for the dead but from the mouths of those who acted with him, Jack Palance was not a really nice man. Sorta had masochistic tendencies. I remember his Oscar acceptance and his famous one handed push up but don't forget that he was 70 or 71 at the time and was still performing push ups at 84. Love Joan Collins, she's a great interview and story teller.

"The Big Country" with Gregory Peck was the first movie that I saw in an indoor theater. Paul Newman was great in "Hombre." Robert Mitchum was good in "The Big Sleep" though I prefer the Bogart version, but he was great in "Farewell, My Lovely." And Jack Palance was so good in "Shane" and in the "City Slickers" movies. Never understood "side saddle", or rather the perverse Victorian morality they are most associated with that required their use by the "proper ladies" of the time. Although they go back even further than that.
Riding a horse when you're half dismounted does indeed sound like a job for a stunt double. So musta been really tough for the ladies of those days to ride without them.
Joan's story of the wrangler's assurances that there was "no danger", promptly being kicked by the rearing horse reminds me of the Bing Crosby Bob Hope story of their experience during one of their Road pictures, where an animal trainer gave the boys similar assurances about a scene where a live bear was to be set loose in a tent the boys were occupying. With Hope and Crosby after very little discussion deciding there was absolutely no way they were getting into a tent with that bear.
A wise choice as it turned out cuz while demonstrating how "safe" it was, the agitated bear once stuck in that tent with the trainer in its frantic attempt to escape practically tore the poor guy's arm off.

  • @grahamhill6340

Rob calling JOAN COLLINS "The BITCH" and Joan correcting him saying I played a "VIXEN"... well, on Rob's part it may have been a Fraudulent Slip in that Joan played before DYNASTY in two campy borderline soft-core porn movies called THE BITCH and THE STUD written by her sister Jackie, that were shown in regular theaters and later on TV in Britain and Europe!
But then, when I worked on DYNASTY for a short time, to the crew and especially the producers and directors, she was often identified by them as "The Bitch." Even so, she always had a good sense of humor, no matter how difficult she could be to work with.
Still, that's part of Joan's charm... but compared to today's glamorous starlets , JOAN COLLINS is most certainly a class act!

@@AWordonWesterns Rob, as usual with any guest you got Joan to feel comfortable and open-up... who else is going to ask about her western "career" and riding a horse?
The same year THE BRAVADOS came out, her contract studio 20th Century-Fox really were preparing her for CLEOPATRA, screen tested her, and this was for the epic that was being based out of England not Rome, which literally came years and millions of dollars later in this very troubled endless project of recasting everyone from actors and directors. You know, Joan Collins and Elizabeth Taylor could've been sisters, they were both knighted Dames and in 2001 they both starred in a TV movie THESE OLD BROADS alongside Shirley MacLaine and Debbie Reynolds.
All four had appeared in Westerns, and Rob can you imagine what a Word on Westerns show that would've made if they all showed up together!
