- It is difficult to learn the fretboard and find the notes you need while playing a solo. The Solø app from Tom Quayle and David Beebee is a great tool for developing a solid fretboard overview, and in this video, we discuss how it works and how you can use it to develop this aspect of your playing.

I always see the root note of a chord and see what's around it. I do that with chords and with scales/arpeggio's. For example, i see the G on the fifth string and then i just see some shapes around it and know how they sound before i play it. Still struggling to mix some scales sometimes, like for example playing Ab melodic minor over G7 alt, i just start a half step above the root note but it would be pretty difficult to start on another note an octave higher, Also it's boring to start every line playing one the same notes, jazz isn't easy lol. Don't know if that is a good way ? Anyway, i'll be patreon soon, your lessons have a big impact on my guitar playing and knowledge
Thanks for having us, Jens!
Of cours! Always fun to hang out! Hopefully there is a NAMM in 22
Hey Tom, this app seems wonderful! A couple questions/suggestions for features if not already implemented
- With the randomization function when practicing chord tones, is there a mode that allows for randomizing them so that you are working your way towards a target note in the following chord? For example, ending chord 1 by playing the b3 because it leads smoothly into the following chord's 5
- Does this app pick up when note are being played in different octaves, and can you select to practice songs/chord tones in specific octave ranges?
Very excited to try this out, just picked it up!
I love the App!
Why lock the android version out of non-USA market?
Love it! I bought it as soon as it was announced. I can’t wait to see all those exciting updates. I would love for you to demonstrate how you would recommend a novice use Solo in a video.
Thanks Patrick! Did you check out the Sølo channel? czcams.com/channels/C_R9AFuolvhkfKh3kHcPHw.html
Great to catch up virtually Jens, many thanks! Fingers crossed we can do it in person in the near future :)
Thanks David! I really hope so :)
Cool seeing you all together!!!!
So glad you made this video, Jens! I have the app and I love it, yet I know I'm just barely scratching the surface of its abilities because I kind of get overwhelmed by all the possibilities. This has shown me some GREAT ideas on how to approach using Solo. Super-helpful, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this guys. Just bought the app and first impression is good. I find it easier than having to go through books on the same topics. Tack för detta Jens 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for putting it out for android all!! Love the app and love all three of your guys channels!
Guitar crossover event of the year! Been loving Solo since I got it.
Thank you! :)
Aww thanks Josh! It's always a blast hanging out with Jens :) Glad you're enjoying Solo!
Just purchased. Looks like a winner!
This looks really interesting!
This sounds fascinating.
Looks like this could be the practice tool I'm looking for! Thanks guys!
Go for it :)
Cheers, SAA, hah what a great username!
@@DavidBeebee I've invested in the app! I'm very happy thanks! 😊
Imagine I've been making exercises on paper to learn all this. So great initiative and thnx for introducing Jens. Some ideas for soloing: finding the common and adjacing notes in a chord progressing. And finding first the most identifying notes of a scale/mode that show the 'colour'.
This is very useful for me. I bought the app and am loving it.
Great to hear!
Jens - I think simplicity is elusive. Keep teaching your great stuff the way you do best👍
Thank you! I will certainly try :)
Thanks Jens 👍🎶🎸
Glad you like it!
Thank you for another wonderful video, Mr. Larsen! I'm struggling with keeping count while improvising. After learning the complete chord progression of a jazz standard by heart, I find it hard to know exactly where I am while improvising. Of course, I'll listen to a backing track and I'll know recognize the end of bar 8 or bar 12, f.e. because that can be very clear. But when I'm in the middle of a sentence I tend to get lost. I'd like to get to a level where I can say exactly: 'Now I'm in the 2nd bar at the 2nd quarter note.' Is there a method to help me train this?
Wow it's so easy to learn guitar nowadays with youtube, when I started there was no youtube or internet for that matter I had crappy tab books that were all wrong usually lol and the radio which you had to train your ear rewinding a cassette tape 500 times to learn a lick or solo, I'm not a jazz player but I think you should learn all styles of music just makes you a better guitarist and creativity only bad thing about learning guitar today is it takes the ear out of learning which is extremely important would be my only advice for anyone learning guitar today train your ear! the guitar is a beautiful instrument everyone should learn to play guitar or any instrument for matter music makes the world turn being able to play it is an incredible thing.
Purchased, this seems like just what I need to learn the fretboard without feeling I’m just memorizing note locations.
Great! Go for it :)
Cheers Ethan, happy practising!
Finally got ii, awesome
thanks jc!
I bought this app a while back and was surprised how useful it was for ear training by singing the notes in. Just a neat little bonus.
Glad it was helpful!
Yep, I drove my wife crazy doing this whilst in the app development/testing stages haha
Ah so you can sing the notes in?
@@liammcgrath8076 yep, just make sure to calibrate it first by singing 👍🏻
Looks really good, will check out now its on android
Go for it!
Yes keeping track is hard ! Cerebrally overloaded that's for sure. Loving to get going with this. Thankyou all so much
Go for it :)
This seems like the perfect tool! Seeing music by interval is a very guitarist-like approach. I would love to try this out
Give it a shot! :)
iPhone 5. Could not install øv it is to old? Can one install it on the pc as well?
This app is a gold mine
Very good for getting fast with rootless voicings.
Absolutely! It can help deprogram root fingering/voicing bias :)
The App is Great!! Definitely worth it!! Just buy it!!... It's cheaper than that New Guitar you were looking at lol...
Haha! Totally agree!
Hi Tom & David, great app, but is it possible to instal this app also on my laptop?
Maybe ask on one of their videos on the Sølo YT channel czcams.com/users/SoloApp 🙂
Jens, having tried both, I'm sticking to your method of thinking mostly note names. I came from thinking in intervals and the biggest problem of it (as you mentioned in your other video) is really VOICE LEADING. You can't voice lead thinking of intervals. Which is why your solos seem more connected to the song as whole and I prefer that, whereas Tom Quayle's is hyper-focused on the current chord, which maybe other musicians might prefer.
I want the solo to connect to the song as a whole, so I think in terms of note names for better voice leading.
But if someone prefer licks connecting only to the current chord, then think in terms of intervals.
I'm a bit confused by the notion of thinking note names. Doesn't this mean you must be able to spell out the note names of every chord flying by? Who can possibly do that? Thanks for any input!
You absolutely can voice lead thinking of intervals. Because humans are able to quickly shift their attention, so you can think about the chord that comes after the current one, "see" the root, find the intervals, switch your focus to the current chord and connect the dots.
Nice work gents, innovating to service cats everywhere
Very interesting but how could i find this application? What's the name?
Link in the video description 🙂
17:24 adapting the "blow one's own trumpet" to the situation in an understandable, albeit clumsy way lol
😂👍
How guitar specific is the app? I was thinking of using it for tenor banjo.
You can easily do that, it is not tied to guitar at all as long as you are ok ok with thinking in intervals
Great! And it doesn’t matter what octave you play the note?
@@colincotter6 no, that's all fine
when will the windows version of sølo be out ?
It has been for a year or two. I have it on my phone
@@JensLarsen cool could you please post a link for it here please tak Jens

Is the take away that the App currently performs better on Android then IOS? I’d love to see a Windows or VSTi version in the future .
That is certainly my experience.
Has it gotten better for iPhone users since?
Can I use it to Practice Legato Lines creation ?
Maybe check out the Solo YT channel for inspiration?
You certainly could try to apply legato technique to the visualization process solo takes, although it's not designed for it exactly.
How to create Legato longer Lines?
Can you create your own set of changes in the App??
Hey, you can't yet - but we are hoping to work on this for a future version :) In the meantime there is an extensive amount of changes in there covering the majority of jazz/pop/blues harmonic contexts.
@@DavidBeebee Thank you! I bought the App and it's really great, thanks for the work!
App store says it's not available for Samsung Galaxy S8. Any plans to expand compatible devices?
You have to ask David and Tom about this, I have no idea
Hi, unfortunately the S8 might be a bit too far back for us to support. I can't remember which Android version it supports, but solo requires Android 8.0 (API 26) or higher. If you can upgrade to that you should be able to download it.
It is available on an S8 here, so maybe you need to update the phone, the S8 should go to Android 9.0
@@JensLarsen ahh that’s good to know!
@@JensLarsen Thanks! Yes I had to update to android 9
Jens: Kan dit appje ook op een laptopje worden geïnstalleerd?
I don't think so, but you would have to ask David or Tom
@@JensLarsen Ok, maar kun jij dat voor nu niet even doen? Jij kent hen en hebt contact met ze. Toch?

whats the name os this app.?
It is called Sølo
@@JensLarsen Android??
@@guilhordas yes 🙂
So the android version is better than the ios version?
I thought so.
@@JensLarsen thanks for replying.
Can We use 3 Notes Per String scales for Sight Reading ?
Yes
I notice that You don't use 3 Notes Per String positions when You play diatonic Arpeggios.
In Your videos You use CAGED positions for playing diatonic Arpeggios?
@@guitarvibes1828 No, I use the berklee system, but which has 7 positions, but two are the same as CAGED. Never learned or used CAGED. Don't over think this,.
@@JensLarsenYou said that You use 3 Notes Per String system. And You learned also Berklee Fingering but You use exclusively 3 Notes Per String in Your videos on the differents system
@@guitarvibes1828 When I teach then I use what resonates with most students, those positions work for two systems.
they should make a desktop app
Jens got a stethophonendoscope?
Yes, it is for dissecting Jazz licks and sort out the chromatic parts
I'm from Philippines learning jazz
Great! Go for it!
Awesome, enjoy the journey!
crazy that this is only available on ios!
It's been out for android for a few years
@@JensLarsen I think he meant to new version of solo app v2 only on IOS
Beginner topic explained for advanced players.. (or am i as bad as that)
Fretboard visualization is not necessarily a beginners topic so don't feel bad if this is too difficult for you.
Love the guys but together they look like a commercial for a wig! (I'm bald so can make fun)
😂 😂
Everyone's looking for a way to avoid doing the work. All you need to know is there laid out on the fingerboard....do we need an app to boil an egg? Just jivin, but you know this whole "instructional" stuff is beginning to grind my gears. My response has been to to go back to classical guitar.Today I played through Bach's Chaconne [ed Segovia] ....yeah not a "correct" edition.... but man that is the shit! And you better know the fingerboard to take on that masterpiece. Ain't no app for that! And I felt truly uplifted rather than bummed out about how much I suck....Bach never sucks!
Properly learning the fretboard is more like making a super complex sauce. SOLO has helped me to really break through in a significant way. Thank you Tom and David for making this possible.
@@paulbarnett6797 Pleased for you, I suppose this is not for me.
Glad you are having fun making some music :)
