  • My clip and grow Juniper (Juniperus Sabina tamariscifolia) is getting it's third styling to prune the tree to a more compact and windblown form.

    I really can imagine me standing next to this tree on coastal hike. Beautiful tree. Love the pot.

    I’m going to be very self indulgent and say I would love to see a tiny version of this tree in one of your new tiny rectangle pots

    Another pruning, another small step forward for the Juniper! I like the wild look 👍

      Lots more work to go on this one, but it's a step ahead!!

    I never really liked junipers. This is because I see them as overused and too similar to one another in Japanese style bonsai. After watching through your clip and grow series, you've given me just what I needed, a refreshing and original view on junipers. Makes me wanna get one. Thanks Nigel.

    Happy Lunar New Year, Nigel! Year of the Dragon.

  • @guywatson-bognorregisbonsa7370

    Terrific Nigel. There are a couple of comments about the 'wild style' of this tree. I would go even further & say that, especially from your front view, the tree reminds me of a punk rocker's Mohican haircut. Loved the video. 👍👍

    I saw one of our fellow viewers say they typically are not a fan of junipers and after watching you style this one, they are rethinking that. I too agree with them. I've avoided them but now I think I want one as well.

    It is so cool to see a tree in both a species and a style that is almost universally wired, being developed with clip and grow! Really enjoying this series, Nigel, thank you!

    Hey Nigel, absolutely love your videos and this one is no exception. Just wanted to say that your mastery of the clip and grow really shines through here. The taper of the tree and the windswept effect is really natural looking yet drastic. I had a question regarding the clip and grow technique. Is it synonymous with directional pruning? I sometimes get the feeling that it is used synonymously, but I think I might be wrong. If I understand correctly, the clip and grow is more for creating various branch divisions at an increasingly small scale, whereas directional pruning is not necessarily used for this purpose but more for steering the direction of branches? So it seems as though on this tree for example, you have used both directional pruning and the clip and grow technique, would that be correct? Thanks and keep up the great work! :)

      Absolutely spot on!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Both clip and grow and directional pruning is used on every bonsai, the difference is the use of wire to position branches vs. using the available buds the tree gives you to create a branch in the direction you want. This gives the tree a bit of a voice in the styling and also gives a more natural tree form for the species. The branches grow in a manner that is native to the tree, not bent into a forced growth pattern. Wiring can be used to create a really good tree, if it is not over done and relied on too much. Unfortunately many trees are over wired into some bizarre forms and in the end, they don't look much like a natural tree growing in the wild. I think this should be a focus for your bonsai. The goal shouldn't be to marvel at the manipulation of the grower, but to marvel at the wonders of nature.

      Beautifully explained, thank you!@@TheBonsaiZone It now just clicked for me that by employing these techniques you allow the tree to grow based on the uniqueness of the species at hand and like you say, that makes it even more special!

    I’m going to be critical. Those roots were adding character. Personally I liked them. Don’t get me wrong you are very good at this and I’ve learned from you but sometimes you get prune happy.

    I still don't understand why people don't want juvenile foliage...because it's pointy?

    • @rebeccahunter725
      @rebeccahunter725 Před 5 měsíci

      One of the intentions of bonsai is to give the illusion of age. Juvenile foliage is the antithesis of that! Also, it is pointy and makes the tree less pleasant to work on. And evidence of the tree under stress, which might also spoil the illusion. Many reasons, but if it is not a problem to your eye (and hands) then you do you! 😊
