In this video, I compare a popularized existentialist account of human nature with that of the renaissance thinker Pico Della Mirandola. Initially, both seem to affirm that man's existence precedes his essence and that, as a result, he is condemned to be free. But, for Renaissance thinkers, unlike existentialists, this choice occurred within a word of objective value. Man is responsible for who he will become, but his choice can be evaluated based on an objective structure of value flowing forth from God in a Great Chain of Being.

Thanks for your exegesis, reflection, and promotion. Pico and the renaissance never get enough credit. Everyone seems to jump from Hellenic philosophy to Descartes with mandatory footnotes on the Middle Ages and almost never anything substantial on these precious Florentine treasures.

This reading of the Oratorio is the one that is handed down to us by the 20th century, and it doesn't really listen to what Pico is saying. He is proposing that the Catholic church convert itself to a truly universalist prisca theologia, that the true religion is that of Pythagoras and the Cabala, and that the goal of salvation is to, through study and devotion, strive to elevate the intellect to a unity with the monad and become an Angel or a God. To say that the Oratorio is about humanism is a profound understatement - he is not just saying that human beings are between animals and God, he is saying that the goal of religion is to become God.

Alternatively, the Nascent Humanism and The Orphic Supernaturalism can be both present. Yes, the Pythagoreanism is there big time. We are to be like angels and better than angels. Sure. But in his defense of natural magic the man seems to be clearly a precursor of modern science…so…both and?
