  • San Bernardino Peak is a great but difficult hike in San Bernardino Mountain Range and the San Gorgonio Wilderness. This hike is 16.5 miles round trip and it gains 4,500 feet of elevation. It is a difficult hike and not one that should be done without proper training. The peak provides amazing views of the surrounding area and it is a beautiful Southern California trail.

    the L.A region is so unique in the world...huge, majestic mountains to the north, beaches, Mediterranean climate and urban living all within an 1 & 20 minutes in every direction..

    Went hiking nearby with a group when I was in the Navy while stationed in San Diego (1977). Very beautiful but one must be prepared because the weather is unpredictable and there are dangers around many corners. It was my first real weekend hiking and adult camping trip and I wasn't all that prepared. It snowed and a friend and I woke up the following morning behind a water fall in a small cave. Got wet when I try to get out. Later that day I unknowingly stumbled onto a mountain lion's den and noticed all these big bones of medium to larger size prey. I got a little scared but realized she or he must have been out. I was lucky. But all in all it was very good adventure despite me being a little miserable because if my being not fully prepared. Like the old petty officer that was with us said "A good sailor is always prepared". A good lesson for me.

    Nice view of the smog!
    I used to go up to Big Bear lake a lot in the late 70's and early 80's before it became a tourist attraction. Back then, when you got near the lake, looking down into the valley below all you could see was the top layer of smog. No views of anything!

    • @conni70
      @conni70 Před 4 lety +7

      the smog was worse back in the 70's & 80's, before the emissions laws went into effect..but good job on being a debbie downer..not many urban areas in the world have what L.A has, and that's huge, beautiful mountains in their back yard, situated in a Mediterranean climate...

      Perhaps the more appropriate question is: “what is Kirby?”
      KIRBY (noun)
      kir·by | \ ˈkərbē\
      A Kirby is a Native American trail beast best known for roaming the mountains and backcountry forests of Southern California. Kirby can be very sneaky and often passes hikers in a blur to the top. Topping out at up to 4.0MPH, Kirby’s cannot be stopped when they make up their mind to do something. Though Kirby’s are somewhat intimidating to look at, due to their majestic beauty (you may not want to look directly at a Kirby), Kirby’s are generally gentle creatures that like tangerines and ice cream.
      Kirby’s have been known to push others in the mud when they get obstructed so watch for Kirby out there!!!
