- The Mazda 3 Turbo is an AWD hot hatch. On the outside you will discover 18in gloss black wheels, LED lighting and aero additions. On the inside you will be greeted by a leather interior. Under the hood is a 2.5L turbocharged inline-4 mated to an 6-speed automatic transmission. Is the 2024 Mazda 3 Turbo a BETTER sport compact car than a VW GTI?

After I saw your 2021 Mazda3 Turbo review, I went and bought one in Machine Grey. Having owned the car for over 3 years, I can tell you that this is a joy to drive every single day. Even 3 years later when I look around at all the latest and greatest from other brands, the Mazda ecosystem is still the one I want to be in.

How many rattles?
@@bigweedonlyyou know? I had a few at the beginning, but they were all gone by 30K miles.
@@JeffreyGaiserMusicdid the rattles go away by itself? or you had it fixed?
Bought mine new off the lot in '09. Its color is True Red. It's my second Mazda.
I got my Mazda 3 sedan on Tuesday. I've already put 300 miles on it, I love it!
Oh wow! That’s freaking awesome!
No touchscreen infotainment, you must be drinking illegal sh&t.......
Just bought the Carbon turbo hatchback last week. 💪🏻
I got the preferred hatchback 2024!
This car looks really good. Love the design and the fit and finish of the interior.
I totally agree with you
Guarantee this is more reliable long term than a VW
Less luxurious and just basic. VWs have come a long way in terms of reliability.
Mazda have a bad reliability in europe
@@skalomax I had a 2016 Audi A5. Babied the car. Garaged.
At 51k miles the car would have cost 3-4k in maintenance over 2 years to keep it. That's having Audi Care and doing all regular maintenance. Hard pass. Even though I ordered it with a 6 speed. Got 27,000 out of it from Carvana.
Waited 1.5 years and now drive a 2022 VN 6 speed. Been bulletproof for the first 14,700 miles so far. After a month I got over going from an Audi interior to a Hyundai plastic interior. N mode for the win.
Just saying based on my experience, VW group products cost too much to maintain.
Are you sure about that
@@PeterSothern in Europe VW parts and products are everywhere. Servicing a VW out of dealer requires an import shop that knows what they are doing in the USA.
Mazda is a hot brand right now coming out fresh with the crossovers and this Mazda 3 hatchback is just right. Thanks Joe and Steven as always!
You are so very right
Mazda is a great brand. After owning Acura, Lexus and Infiniti cars, I have found Mazda vehicles offer so much driver focused enjoyment along with luxury brand quality at slightly above mainstream prices it’s no wonder they are finally getting recognized. In the last 10 years I’ve leased or bought a Mazda6 Signature, a CX-9 GT, and right now my wife has a ‘22 CX-5 Signature and I have my 6th Miata since 2001…..a ‘21 RF Club BBR. I love Mazdas! Thanks for your great videos Joe…..ON THROTTLE!
@Dano-MX5 nice! All those mazdas😊
@@Dano-MX5 How reliable of that cx5 turbo engine? could you give me som info and how u guy mantaine it
I just bought a CX-50 and thought I would hate the screen not being a touch screen but I actually got used to it in just a few days and find the knob to be so much more convenient, simple and quick to use.
I dont understand the hatred for the rotary knob. I like it more than a touch screen.
I rented a 2023 cx30. I got used to it in a heartbeat.
I had a 2014 Mazda 3 with the same style of rotary knob and frankly I prefer it over the newer touch screens I've tried in a few rental cars. I can control everything by touch without taking my eyes off the road or trying to reach for the screen. It's great.
Got my 2014 Mazda 3 at 94k miles 4 years ago, it’s now at 185k miles with NO engine problems, no mayor problems either. Best car
My 2012 is approaching 350k. No major issues as of today's date other than a small vacuum leak. Sill getting awesome gas mileage.
Answer is Yes.
I was at that crossroad 3 years ago and ended up with a '21 brand new 3 Turbo AWD. (Red interior leathers & polymetal gray paintjob)
Since 2019, this gen has killed it. The 3 Turbo with AWD really has a strong value proposition as a long term daily for the comfort and performance it brings.
Plush interior finish, great reliability, affordable service costs. You can even run between 87 octane to 93 on the engine for flexibility. 250hp/320 ft torque is more than way enough for highway & city driving.
As much as the Golf GTI is the more "true hot hatch", but man that VW interior/infotainment and reliability is subpar. The deal breaker for me was the GTI plastics & infotainment on test drive..
I needed a livable vehicle for daily drive between home & office especially when it snows. That Mazda interior & overall drivability really makes you feel your money's worth. (@ premium plus trim)
Hell that torque & AWD should be the icing.
IMO, it will be a tough choice for an enthusiast performance wise but down the line, the Mazda 3 will be great for mods & now has decent aftermarket support.
(The OEM brakes is weak for the power & torque the car has for example so that's on my mind down the road for mods)
You won't regret the choice. Yes, it's entry level pricing that you can get in the Germans but the upkeep drives home the value of the Mazda.
With the way car prices are and service costs, I'm sure most will make that smart decision.
Tough choice for enthusiasts? That part is hilarious.
The Mazda 3 turbo has a non existent aftermarket support compared to the GTI. This is coming from someone who owns neither of these cars.
The ea888 is easily capable of high 300's whp. The Mazda 3 turbo's engine can barely handle 270whp lol.
Include the fact that the Mazda3 has the poorest suspension type available in 2024. We are not calling torsion bar suspension open diff AWD cars enthusiasts vehicles lol. Not to mention it's coming with an archaic slush box automatic. How can that even be compared to a dct.
The Mazda3 is a fine vehicle, but it's a luxury comfortable compact with slightly more power than base models. Comparing it to a GTI, that has significantly more advanced suspension tuning, a front lsd, and a robust engine capable of big power is hilarious.
The Mazda3 is a perfectly fine vehicle without pretending that it's something that it's not. It isn't any sportier than your mom's SUV.
Reliability, practicality, comfort at its price point is undeniable. But it is by far the least sportiest car at its price bracket and segment. I'd definitely consider one as a daily, most people aren't going to be pushing the limits of a car like this. But calling it an enthusiast vehicle is crazy
@@shamalabadingdong lol imagine driving an automatic.
Loving the Mazda 3 Turbo I love the way it looks & even though the back seats are low on features I still love it a ton.
Always killing it with so many car reviews , love that you bring all kinds of cars for all likes. thank you!!!!!
Dude, i got mine 5 days ago, in white with aero kit. Just love it))
I have this exact same car and I love it!! I love going on throttle in my Mazda 3 Turbo 😁
@lalalal8111Mazda3 turbo HB without the body kit is $34,115 after destination. The cheapest Golf GTI after destination is $33,585. Similarly equipped Golf SE is $38,140, and springing for the manual is $38,710. Which will be gone next year. Features and pricing mostly favor the Mazda.
I bought a 2023 carbon edition mazda 3 with the red leather seats in December, and im definitely loving the car so far.
Great review. Keep up the good work
Wanted to go on throttle so bad he forgot the cargo area 😂
I thought I was the only one that noticed that I was like "umm, dude you forgot the cargo area" 😂
@@vicentetalamantez9256 That might be because there IS no cargo area in the Mazda 3. Just look at the rear head and legroom... Makes this more of a 2-seater than a 5.
I have a 23’ Mazda 3 Hatchback Carbon Edition AWD and I love it! I bought it as a “preowned” with only 6k miles, now with just under 17k and I love driving it everyday
Seems like we are seeing more and more dark chrome. I like it!
Amazing review Joe.
I spent my money on one of these a month ago in Soul Red. I honestly love it. Looks beautiful from the outside and inside. Its also fun to drive and should be reliable. I used to have a 2016 CX5 and had no issues with that at all so i suspect this should be just as good. Was also trippy to see US19, i go to that Aldi all the time! 😂
The amount of content that Joe and Lori produce is ridiculous. Insanely impressive.
Im digging the Dark Gunmetal Grey color👀👀
Still loving my 23 GT manual ❤
Hey Joe, I was waiting for this one....waiting for delivery of my 2024 Mazda 3 Turbo AWD GT, same as the one you reviewed with the front lip and rear spoiler option but in Soul Red Cristal !
Having a Super Red II "88 Supra Turbo, I had to go with the red daily Mazda this time. Such an amazing color, much like Candy apple red. 😍😍
Coming from an 2008 Nissan Altima coupe, I'm used to the large rear C Pillars, and yeah using your head and the mirrors, plus Mazda's have a great blind spot monitor, no problem there.
Being AWD (for me in Canada), proven Mazda's reliability, specially with the 2.5 Turbo back from 2015, the GTI didn't even come close with it's boxy look and no buttons interiors.
I was in between the WRX and the Mazda 3, but the exterior looks, great interior, again reliability, real physical buttons and knobs, no big touch screens, won me over.
Right about your Zonks : I already have carbon trims for the piano black, chrome delete for the side mouldings, and 18x8.5wheels for larger 235 high performance tires. 😉
BTW you skipped the "rear cargo area" out of this video even though your were saying you were going to it. 🤔
Being single, the rear seats doesn't bother me and it even have good cargo space! They could even use the USB-C from under the armrest, I have a wireless charger up front 😅
Again Joe great reviews, always love when you go "On Throttle !! " 😎😎
Got the 2021 premium manual. No major complaints.
i test drove one of these but ended up buying a golf R. the golf just gave me so much more for the extra 10k CAD and especially in the canadian market the value was incredible per dollar.
Same here. While the Mazda is a fun car, the 2024 Golf R is on another level. It was definitely worth the 17 month wait. 😊
You had me at knobs and switch’s
AHAHHAA
I have to zonk the placement of cup holders. I need my large coffee on my commute. Thanks Ratti for saving me some time.
We have both the Mazda 3 and VW GTI. Best of both worlds even though both are 2015 models, still loving the design and drivability of both.
Great review Joe. I love that Mazda made this model. Probably a great starter car for someone who wants performance and good styling
love that zoom zoom! They know how to do cars. Right behind Toyota and Honda IMO. I get the zonk on no manual option, but in the US I can understand it. I was thinking $42-46K, not bad for $38K. I'm good with the control knob too. Love the heated steering wheel. They should do what you said and put in better wheels/tires, multi-link suspension, connectivity in back, etc. It's a pretty darn good vehicle.
Mazda has been more reliable than Honda in recent times
Joe and Lori and Steve keep up the good work real true and I love the video real true 👍
Still enjoying my 2009 MazdaSpeed3 GT with 6-speed manual...
Those are special cars
Test drove the GTI in 2009 and found the suspension was a bit too stiff for my daily driving. One thing to note: the MS3 has some serious torque steer on full throttle in 1st. 😊
@@flanerpete2040@damondmotorsports motor mounts will take care of that!
Still have my '12, bought it new, with a custom tune and supporting mods it's an absolute cruise missile of a hatchback, 3rd gear is like a hyperspace jump. The new 3 Turbos are luxe and super nice but there's only one true king.
I think this would be my next car. I've been eyeing on Mazda 3 Hatchback. I'm just waiting for the market to go down even more.
Ive seen so many Mazda 3's all over Trinidad, and with good reason. It's quite an impressive machine. Not perfect by any means, but it's exactly what some customers are looking for.
Wowwwww that is an amazing spec car... the colors are fantastic.... If I saw that on the lot I'd buy immediately
Yo man, i’m from the philippines. More vids of mazda 3 hb. Anyway thanks for this!
Torn between this, miata, and toyota 86. The interior of this really wins for me
If you're going to use it as a daily driver you can't beat the Mazda3. It's quiet on the inside so when you use bluetooth for phone calls on the highway you can actually hear. And its got AWD and should be the fastest of the 3. If you are comfortable with the view out of it and the interior dimensions buy the 3. It'll be great all year around. But in the Philippines you probably don't get snow.
killed me with the "charmin soft" lol
4:15 I like that word: Sporty.
I bought a 2023 Carbon Edition CX-5 for my wife last year. For the money, it blew away the RAV4 and the CRV. I’m dying to get one of these Mazda 3 hatchbacks for myself. I’m not sure if the 2024 FWDs will be available in a standard transmission, but I know the 2023 models did. If they would offer the AWD in a standard, it would definitely be better. But, as a manual only driver, I’ll take what I can get.
alot of info,,,,,like the car,,,,had a mid 80's b2000 pick=up,,,never a problem,,,,,thanks joe
Joe the new GTI 8.5 has the front facing camera. I had this car first but it felt very heavy for a hatch and not performance enough. Got a 2023 Mk8 GTI and never looked back. Once I test drove the GTI I was like wow! I get why so many people love this car.
Love the height on the thing. In an age of the "taller is better" arms race, it's good to see something that'll fit in a parking garage without you holding your breath.
Being a mid 20’s adult, I really wanted to give up the young enthusiast sports car lifestyle and was heavily considering this car. Sadly I just could not find a used Mazda3 for a good price in my area and decided to go for a Hyundai Kona N instead! Love my Kona but whenever I see this car driving on the roads (see it a lot) I always think about how nice it would have been to own one.
Maybe one day!
They made a huge improvement going turbo AWD. But you know they weren’t thinking real performance the way they went 20 plus year back with the rear suspension set up, and the 215 tires all around.
That’s up to the us the consumers to put our touch on it.
@@RolandKoller90 Good luck finding aftermarket support 🤷🏼♂️. Toyota’s 8AR didn’t last much, and didn’t get that aftermarket support needed to succeed in this industry.
@@jmccarsnmore1025You can find wheels and tires for anything. They already have tunes and exhausts for these. You will probably never find forged internals or camshafts or anything but I don't think that really matters with what the trans can really hold anyway.
Yes of course Joe and I will try to buy this car.
Sounds good to me
Check out some of the aftermarket goodies from Corksport. Put their air intake and cat back exhaust on my 22 - sounds and goes even better. Great car - been very happy with my choice.
I remember when they first introduce this generation hatchback with its large C pillar design and I thought how ugly it was.... fast forward to today I own a 2021 hatchback premium FWD and its style have aged beautifully!
just got a fully loaded cpo 2021 mazda 3 turbo hatch for just under $23k and i am grinning from ear to ear - this is the best value on the market!
The DSG transmission is great of you can get over that slight delay on takeoff from a stoo due to it being a dual clutch automatic. In sport mode it raises the rpm so when you take off it isnt noticed.
This has a traditional 6AT.
Finally a larger infotainment
No cargo area footage ? A must have !
I own a 2021 GTI and I really like the Mazda hatches
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Mazda3 to any driver out there. That being said, I still scratched my head on Mazda's decision to put the torsion beam rear suspension in this model instead of the superior multi-link. I don't buy their arguments, particularly as they are attempting to go "upmarket". Hopefully on a future replacement they will go back to the multi-link, but it still is a great car.
I had 2006 mazda 3 speed andni loved it..have a vw tiguan now and love it but lacks hp..im waiting for the mazda cx70 to come out..test drove a cx 50 and reallu enjoyed it but im a big guy and those mazdas are tight in the driver seat. Vw much roomier.
This just makes me more excited for what Mazda's gonna do with Mazda Spirit Racing and those two special models that are essentially the new Mazda Speed.
this is my goal car!
How do you get your car lights to flicker like that? It makes a cool display
They don't IRL, they fade. The flicker is just the camera reacting to the LEDs.
Actually Screen goes Touch once you enter apple carplay / Android Auto... only 10" screens. Own a 2024 turbo premium plus, love it!
You should get your hands on the new Carbon Turbo version they came out with recently for the Mazda 3! It has a cool new interior
Wish these came with a manual
And the engine even comes with a couple of cupholders!
Lol. You really have to take that cover off or you will get rats nesting in there
The skinny tires must be for MPGs. Outside of that, the M3TAWD hatch is a serious winner.
Forever Mazda. Better in any point of view ❤
Those seats are truly comfortable!
You better believe it!
I bought a 2021 Mazda3 turbo. Great car. Needs a manual option in the turbo trim.
I own one. You should too. It’s exellent
I bet the regular current gen Mazda 3 is even more reliable on the used market than the current gen Corolla. It's because the maint schedule is more in line with reality. 5k oil changes, two year brake fluid flushes, gearbox oil/transmission fluid change intervals.
Agree that it would be nice at this price point to have rear air vents and usb connection; however, the Integra Type S @$52k doesn’t either. At least the Mazda provides a nice rear center arm rest. That’s something, right? Lol. Big fan of what Mazda is doing right now. Also wish they did not have the torsion beam rear, as that seems to be performance limiting. Great overall daily option still, and would likely go with it over a GTI if cross-shopping.
This car looks really good.))
I love my Mazda 3, personally I think it’s the best car you can buy under 40k if you’re single or don’t have kids
I got my auntie a Mazda3 sedan turbo-driven it 90k miles on 87 octane getting 30mpg bay area-sacramento. funny she got it for transporting small puppies in the rear. this after coming from a 04 Jaguar sedan AND 15 gla benz. safety and maintenance peace of mind 🎉 mazda 2021 certified used (6k miles) still under warranty!
I LOVE the exterior colour! Ugh I have the 2020 3. Between this and the CX-5/CX-50 or a bmw 😅
The 3 is nice, but I want the 6 back. I love full size sedans.
I mostly like the way the newer Mazda3 HB is designed but the back pillars / rear passenger windows bother me
The Volkswagen GTI will win every time in my book. You get so much more for the money. The VW will give you ventilated seats, a better infotainment system, and a more modern transmission for the same price tag. Mazda is still entirely behind the competition in 2024.
Thanks Joe for another great review. One question, what is the best value for the money between Mazda 3 and CX-5? I know these are two different type of cars, but what would you put your money on regardless your preference of segment?
Just get a CX-30 and split the difference. It's a 3 with additional ground clearance and better visibility.
@@jamesrather1510 GOOD ANSWER!!!!
I went CX5, no regrets. It’s much more practical for cargo, and great visibility out the windows.
GTI has been going for so long for a reason. Numbers be damned, when you drive one it just makes sense. It's got an x factor. I love Mazda, I wish Mazdaspeed was still a thing. This is more a GT hatch, IMO.
Every Mazda continues to rise in price every year yet they do very minimal updates/changes. $38k for this is pushing it big time
If a baby seat can fit backwards behind the front seat without the front passenger being squished then im sold lol
This car is growing on me!
Ur funny Joe! Ur outfit matches the car perfectly 😁
They may not be bringing back a “Mazdaspeed” vehicle but they seem to be bringing out a Mazda Spirit Racing (MSR) line of vehicles 😉.
FYI: The CZcams channel, "snap cars" is using your audio from this video on "their" most recent post. Actually I think their using your audio in all their videos.
A manual would make this thing a beast😁
It really would!

haha well, something close was announced in Japan recently - see Mazda Spirit Racing project
they got a STI & Golf R killer of a Mazda 3 hatch in the works
Rear doors remind me Purosangue n Joe you didn't show cargo area
I thought I read somewhere that the infotainment is a touchscreen when using Apple Carplay or Android Auto? Was this the case in this model?
It is…. But not for Mazda connect
i think at certain speeds the touch screen capability disables so you use the mazda connect knob
Bought a 2024 mazda three g s sport with the luxury package. Love
the car but the cylinder deactivation is frustrating. It is not seemless and has a small vibration. When running on 2 cylinders wish I could just turn it off.
I'm interested to watch your review on the new 24 sonata n line.
Should we pick 2025 Camry hybrid, Prius hybrid or Mazda 3 for the same price?
I would test drive them back to back and see which one speakers to me more, there just that compatible
Nice car and review but this can't ve compared to the GTI since it's awd, me I'd still rather the Golf R but I'm definitely gonna go check this out
Sweet little hatchback.
Did you skip the cargo area part?
Mazda knows the wheels are too skinny. It's a known complaint for years. I switched to Dunlop SPs and never looked back. Long time Mazda owner and patiently waiting to test drive the CX-70.
Hoping the Mazda Spirit Racing adds some HP and Torque to the 3 Turbo
There is a lot that i like about this car, but too much that i dont like to ever consider it over a GTI.
I test drove a MK8 380 SE last week and it was absolutely incredible to drive.
Side note: Joe, please get your hands on a the new 380 trim. This is the final year for the manual and the 380 trim is the only way that you can option a MK8 in manual. I would love to get your take on it!
I currently have a 2024 Gti 380 edition SE. 4 months and vehicle is awesome. I personally think its better compared to the Mazda 3 turbo. The gti looks sportier and interior is better.
@@alex340301 agreed!
GTI just has that extra sports appeal, I doubt Mazda is targeting those drivers with this car.
multilink + stiff sway bar = torsion beam.
since that setup the left and right was Never independent with the sway bar, might as well go really cheap and put sway bar in it.
GTI & Mazda 3 are significantly different cars.
They’re both wonderful in their own way.
My son has the Mazda 3. He loves it. Though he also likes my GTI.
For myself, I appreciate his 3 a lot. But no way would I trade my GTI for one.
GTI is a far more fun drive. Honestly.
And, no, the 7.5 GTI didn’t have tons of problems.
And the reliability should be even better as they’ve improved several parts, switching from plastic to aluminum
Also, the GTI DOES have a forward facing camera
VW has ranked poorly in reliability for decades now my man. Mazda ranks at the top for decades.
People are driving Mazdaspeed3's at 250k miles, that have been tuned to 300whp that have been burning oil for 150k miles and they run great.
You missed a zonk, you can’t put the rear seats down without removing the passenger headrest, I took mine out and put them in the garage.
