Today, we're diving deep into the captivating story of The Cardigans, a Swedish band that took the world by storm with their unique blend of indie pop, rock, and electronic sounds. From their humble beginnings in one of the most religious communities of Sweden to international stardom,
"Our story begins in the early 1990s in Jönköping (Youn-showping), a city in southern Sweden. It was here that five young musicians came together to form what would become one of country’s most successful musical exports."
Prior to forming the Cardigans in 1992, guitarist Peter Svensson and bassist Magnus Sveningsson, were playing in different metal outfits. But they soon ditched them after getting into jazz music and bands like the cure. It was around 1992-1993 they enlisted Sveningsson’s school mates and possible old flame Nina Persson in addition to keyboardist Lars-Olof Johansson as well as drummer Bengt Lagerberg. It was the first band for three of the members. In fact Persson had never sung a single note before, but Svensson and Sveningsson were convinced she had an aura they needed and should be the center of the group.
But being a musician wasn’t what Perrson originally envisioned, initially enrolling in art school hoping to become a visual artist. Remarking to the blaring out show “I was bored out of my mind in this small, safe place (Jönköping). I was like, 'Awesome, I get to hang with fun guys.'" they were soon living under the same roof tinkering away on their music.
Perrson’s family was also an outlier in the town that was considered one of the most religious places in Sweden. Her father a banker, her mother a social worker, were both atheists.. Perrsons remarked to the indepedent "It was very, very religious," "Suffocatingly so." The more her mother pushed on her that God wasn’t real, Perrson’s did something unexpected, getting baptized at age 14 adding "I still don't really believe in God, but I like the aesthetics of religion a lot. Do I pray? Only when I want something."
Each member brought their own unique musical background and influences to the table." One of their early influences was the jazz music they heard on Swedish children’s television,. The other members influences included Swedish pop group ABBA to ‘the Smiths,The Sundays, Stone Roses and Depeche Mode all the way to heavy metal like Black Sabbath.
In a 1996 interview with Billboard magazine, Nina Persson reflected on the band's formation:
When we got together, it just clicked. We had this shared vision of making music that was different from what was popular at the time."
As for the band’s name 'The Cardigans,' it was chosen almost at random. In a 2005 interview with The Guardian, Peter Svensson explained:"
"We were just sitting around trying to come up with a name, and someone suggested 'The Cardigans.' It didn't really mean anything to us, but we liked how it sounded. It was kind of cozy and non-threatening, which was the opposite of the grunge scene that was popular then." It was kinda funny that a cardigan is one of the most iconic things kurt cobain wore during the band’s 1993 unplugged concert.
The Cardigans began rehearsing and writing songs in 1992, developing their signature sound that blended elements of pop, jazz, and rock. The band soon moved to a Swedish city of nearly 250,000 people called Malmo, which had several music clubs and a nearby studio. The band started playing shows in nearby Copenhagen in denmarand lund and of course malmo in sweden. It was referred in one publication as the golden triangle of music.
Their early demos caught the attention of Swedish producer Tore Johansson," The members would even refer to him as the sixth cardigan. “The producer invited the budding musicians to his 24-track analog studio In Malmo and introduced them to vintage instruments and helped shape their retro sound. Bassist magnus svenginsson told Rolling Stone “we didnt’ consider ourselves very 60’s until we started recording at tambourine studios with Tore…So he started to teach us about 60’s music and we adopted his theories.”

Long Gone Before Daylight and Super Extra Gravity is my favorite phase of The Cardigans. I was smitten by the very first track, "Communication." I wish those albums were recognized more. There were so many brilliant songs on each of them. "Live and Learn" is one of my favorite songs of any group ever.

Sometimes it's odd to see a band you like become enormous. In some cases you can sort of see it coming but honestly the Cardigans were never a band I thought would get as huge as they did. It was similar with liking a bunch of Alternate rock in 1989/90 and then it just exploding a year or two later

You TOTALLY overlooked that “My Favourite Game” was the title song for Gran Turismo 2 for the original Playstation. The popularity of the game and song drove the Cardigan’s success to new heights. It was similar to how The Prodigy became universally popular due to their hit song, Firestarter in the WipeOut XL PS1 game.
