I remember as a child, the local lumber mill had a Michigan loader, fitted with a logging claw, with a "screamer" in it. Every weekday morning, the sound of it would wake me up
Probably a 4-71 the Michi your talking about. I got woken up one morning by the sound of an 8V71 in a IH DCF Transtar fully loaded with timber on flat bed. It was almost as loud as a jet engine. That day I'll never forget.
We had an old Michigan rear stear loader at a pit way out of town we didn't use but maybe twice a year. All you needed was jumper cables and 5 gallons of diesel to mix with the old fuel. Started all the time. It had a 6-53 in it. Simple and crude but didn't let you down.
Yes, they most certainly are tough as hell. The DD 6V71N was used in a lot of MCI and GMC buses for city and suburban use, for decades. Simplicity of design was the selling point. As emissions tightened up, Roger Penske introduced the DD Series 60 engine, a 4-stroke cycle design, but still a very good engine. Now DD truck diesel engines is owned by MTU I believe, and they have a 16-liter truck 6-cylinder diesel engine, which must be a bear!
wonderful machine! I have a Terex 72-31 that's been great on the farm for 20 years now but am going to need brake work soon. Have you had issues finding parts for yours?
We have one of these in our your yards it acts like the declutch is enguuaged and it’s not . We were loading trucks went to lunch at noon came back and it wouldn’t move been sitting ever since
And being a total savage by throwing the dirt in the truck and spilling the first part on the side of the body. I love the sound of the old Detroit’s but don’t need to operate it like a savage.
@@toddgittins5692 na mate Detroit diesels are very reliable , will run when they worn out . Only thing is if a blower seal blows and they self feed on oil can cause a runaway
I love how 2400 rpms sounds like 10,000 !
That’s because it’s a two stork
So it should be 4800.
Brilliant comment! Me too! 👍
that DD sound is like a fresh cup of coffee in the mornin'
The best thing to ever come out of Detroit, has to be the GM Diesel!!!
Longest lasting Diesel engine. Tough as hell

I ran one of these about 30 years ago, I was young it was wore out. Now I'm wore out and running excavators.
I used to run the same loader in the snow in Hackensack and Fort Lee NJ. That loader was in mint condition.
I love the Detroit Diesel. Tough as hell

@petermalanchuk8210 Roger Penske also helped design the 6.5 GM diesel, if I'm guessing?
Yeah Go The Detroit Diesel
Listen to that Detroit diesel
All Detroit engine ought to be sold with ear protection.
Was the best dam loader ever we actually had two a 51 a and a 51b a 79 and 80 models
I love 2 stroke Detroits.
Nothing like a Detroit Diesel engine hell yeah
Whenever I see a Detroit that's not smoking I wonder if it's low on oil.
you dont run 5w-30 in a detroit, maybe thats why yours smoke
Diesel grade sae 30 oil for old Detroit's not 15w40.
Low ash 40 grade engine oil
Read the specs!! I even think non detergent, straight weight, viscosity based on ambient temperature!!
That's what I call perfect pitch.......
very nice
Man that engine sounds like a two cycle!
It is
I love it this video needs to be longer though lol!
It's an 8V71 cheers from Australia
MUY BUENO TRABAJE MUCHO TIEMPO DE MI JUVENTUD EN TEREX CATERPILLAR
Old girl's dug a pile or two in the day operator knows how to handle her correctly
Yeah, wide open.
Old Detroit Diesel in that thing. I'm not sure if that is an 8V92 or 8V96.

Yeoooh!!
OH yes! You need one at home!
Can't beat a loader with a bus motor in it! Or anything else for that matter!
As long as somebody is running it.
I wanna see that load looks a little one sided but i do see the longer blade on bucket
Nice

Damn good operator.
Neil Neil apart from the fact he's killing the transmission forcing it in high gear
