- Theyyam, believed to have been derived from the word Daivam, meaning god, is based on the belief that immortal spirits enter into mortal bodies to perform a ritual dance of divine revelation. The spectacular variety of Theyyam performances are possible through the use of elaborate facial make-up, captivating headgear, special costumes and unique ornaments. Theyyams are staged in various temples of Malabar, usually in front of the village shrine, with regularity each year. As performances are on an "open stage" they can also be showcased in traditional Malabar households during festive or special occasions.
Pottan Theyyam is a vivid, lively and colorful ritualistic dance which comes in the traditional art form of theyyam, and is an essential part of the cultural heritage of Kolathunadu, a territory comprising the present Kannur district and parts of Calicut and Kasargod districts of Kerala, India. It is a form of resistance, symbolizing goodness that would wipe out the social evils in the community. The theyyam re-enacts in ritualistic expressions the life of those personalities who had laid down their life for a social cause and is termed as a social satire

A Pulayan (one of the many lower castes in Kerala). Even though born to Pulaya parents Alankaran was a whiz kid. He grew in a society which always treated him and his community with disgust. But he mastered the Vedas, forbidden to the lower castes. Once he had a debate with a Brahmin (the higher caste) as in the other story. He ordered Alankara who came across him to move away from his path. He didn't move instead he retorted, "If the problem is with the way, I shall divide the way into two to travel for both of us", Then Alankaran split that path using his wooden wand. The angry Brahmins later caught him and tied up his limbs threw him into a heap of fire. Being intellectual and gifted with divine knowledge, Alankaran laughed and laughed in the fire and finally succumbed to the fate, scribbled by the privileged ones.

ഉത്തര കേരളത്തില്‍ പഴയ കോലത്തുനാട്ടില്‍ ഏറെ പ്രചാരത്തിലുള്ള അനുഷ്ഠാനകലയാണ്‌ തെയ്യം .പ്രാചീനകാലത്തെ സമൂഹികജീവിതതിന്‍റെ പ്രതിഫലനങ്ങളായിരുന്നു നാടൻ കലകൾ. ആചാരാനുഷ്ഠാനം, ആരാധന എന്നിവയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് ഉണ്ടായവയാണ് അവയിൽ ഏറിയകൂറും. സമൂഹത്തിന്‍റെ ഐക്യത്തെ ദൃഢീകരിക്കാനും വ്യക്തിവികാരങ്ങളുടെ സ്ഥാനത്ത് സമൂഹവികാരത്തെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കുവാനും നാടൻ കലകൾക്കു കഴിഞ്ഞു. പല നാടൻ കലകളും അടിച്ചമർത്തപ്പെട്ട അധഃസ്ഥിതന്‍റെ ആത്മപ്രകാശനത്തിനുള്ള ഉപാധികളായി മാറ്റപ്പെട്ടു. നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾ പഴക്കമുള്ള വടക്കേമലബാറിന്റെ തനതു കലാരൂപമാണ് തെയ്യം...
സവര്‍ണാധീശത്വ പ്രത്യയശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ അന്തസ്സത്തയിലധിഷ്ഠിതമാവുകയും തീര്‍ത്തും അധഃസ്ഥിത വിരുദ്ധ മാനങ്ങല്‍ പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്ന കലാരൂപങ്ങളുടെ മാമൂല്‍ പിടിത്തങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന് വഴുതി മാറി വേറിട്ടൊരു സ്വത്വം തീര്‍ത്ത കലാരൂപമാണ് തെയ്യം. വടക്കേ മലബാറിലെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ ജീവിതത്തെ ഇത്രമേല്‍ സ്വാധീനിക്കുന്ന ഒരു കലാവികാരം വേറൊന്നില്ല....
തെയ്യത്തിന്‍റെ സംഘടന സവിശേഷത , അതിന്‍റെ ജനകീയ കൂട്ടായ്മയാണ്. ജാതി-മതഭേദ്യമന്യേ , എല്ലാ ജനവിഭാഗങ്ങളും ഒരു രീതിയില്‍ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ മറ്റൊരു രീതിയില്‍ ഈ അനുഷ്ടാനത്തില്‍ പങ്കുചേരുന്നു.
ആരാധന എന്ന നിലയ്ക്കാണ് തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയാടുന്നതെങ്കിലും സാമൂഹിക നന്മയും, വിമര്‍ശനവും അതിന്‍റെ ലക്ഷ്യമായി വരുന്നു .

Theyyam is a ritual performed by Hindus. Performers are from lower castes. There are over 400 different types of theyyam. It includes gods goddesses and asuras. It is found in Kannur, Kasaragod and Kozhikode. Kannur is the land of theyyam.
