It's strange. I've been ordering old movies the last couple of months & I got to thinking that "To Sir With Love" would be a good one. Then Sidney Poitier died. Maybe it was a hint? May he rest in peace. What a great actor with so many great movies.

@@flightofthebumblebee9529 Yep. I saw "The Defiant Ones" with Sidney Poitier & Tony Curtis not long ago. I hadn't seen it since I was a kid. (I'm 62) They had great actors & great movies back then. I try telling young people to give those old movies a try. They never listen. Us Old Timers don't know anything you know.

When I heard this song the first time in 1967, I was a junior high school student in Taiwan, I could only say "to Sir, with Respect" in our culture. After having listened to this song for decades, I have gradually understood and melted myself with it and am still listening to it as a retied professor in 2019. There is no greater calling than teaching--I still think so in 2024! Thanks for sharing and thank Lulu for reminding me of those great students I have ever taught at colleges/universities. My dad passed away half a year ago and he taught me a lot in life as any father would. I was a drinker and smoker and was always in trouble with police when I drank. Breaking things as well but until he really got to me and so I quit all the drinking and smoking and started to be more responsible and respect to myself and others. I’m glad he was able to see that I was changing and I did. Thank you dad for teaching me from right from wrong. I love you and rest in peace. (My dad was a fan of this song and the movie) :)

    Those schoolgirl days
Of telling tales and biting nails are gone
    But in my mind
I know they will still live on and on
But how do you thank someone
Who has taken you from crayons to perfume?
It isn't easy, but I'll try
    If you wanted the sky
I would write across the sky in letters
That would soar a thousand feet high
    To Sir, with love
    The time has come
For closing books and long last looks must end
    And as I leave
I know that I am leaving my best friend
A friend who taught me right from wrong
And weak from strong, that's a lot to learn
What, what can I give you in return?
    If you wanted the moon
I would try to make a start
But I would rather you let me give my heart
    To Sir, with love

Thank you to that country across the pond for the gifts of Lulu, Dusty Springfield and Cilla Black. In between the three of them, they brought the moving emotion that came with timeless vocals from a time long ago. If you have an appreciation of Lulu's voice, check out Cilla Black's version of "Anyone who had a heart" and what can you say about Dusty's "Son of a preacher man". I do believe these three women set the bar pretty high for english singers. What soulful gifts they gave us. Their music is just as fine wine, as it ages it only gets better.
Thank you Lulu, Cilla and Dusty.
And thank you England from an American fan of amazing music.

This has just taken me back to my very happy time at school with my friends . The day we all left school we seemed to all go out separate ways. Making new friends at work etc… Forgetting each other . It makes me very sad . If only I knew then what I know now. Taking life for granted . Losing loved ones along the way. Life has gone by in the blink of an eye. Oh how I wish I could go back in time and do it all again. If I could I’d not be so selfish and , appreciate more what I now realise I did take for granted all those years ago.♥️

I like all the bands you mentioned, although todays music comes up shy of the creative and productive qualities of yesterdays music...That's a fact jack!! This is why most of today's songs will survive 18 months..... if that...Peace Dude!

DOUG HEINS "winewhore OD'ing was a good thing" you sound like one of those creepy guys obsessed with celebrities that you hate to the point where you truly want them dead. I don't care about their antics, people like the ISIS are people who should be hated, not some idiot celebrities like Bieber. You say today's generation listen to rubbish, meanwhile you pay too much attention than should be warranted as to what some idiot gets up to on a Saturday night. Nearly everyone in this comment chain is idiotic in any case as you're all stating your opinions as factual unaware that music like art is also subjective. Try classical music and you'll find there are many composers out there alive today who write memorable pieces still. Bye!
