Beveridge Reef: the most remote anchorage in the world?! (Ep. 66)

  • Exhausted after 8 days at sea, we're ready to drop the hook, and luckily we know just the place.... 100s of miles from anywhere, in the middle of the south Pacific ocean there is a submerged atoll, and in that atoll there is a gorgeous lagoon, and in that lagoon there is a white sandy bank that (in the right weather conditions) is the perfect anchorage for tired sea farers looking for respite after a storm. The water is shallow and the holding is good, but there is nothing there...no stores, no houses, no land, no people...nothing but blue for as far as the eye can see. The reef offers little protection from weather or big swell, but those brave enough to venture there are rewarded with unbelievably clear water - arguably the clearest in the world! - and coral teeming with wild life that have little fear humans...which, it turns out, is great for fishing, but not so good when it comes to sharks.... Join us as we explore Beveridge Reef, and help us decide if it is, in fact, the most remote anchorage in the world. THANK YOU FOR WATCHING!

Imagine if you could motor out to beverage reef every Saturday! Well, then I guess we would be living with the Na Vi in the movie Avatar!
The drone look downs are mesmerizing. So beautiful. What a discovery…THANK YOU!

Another great one guys. Love the narration and production. It gets better every episode although it was never bad. Go back and look at your first ones pulling out of the harbour. You guys have come a long way (literally) and we enjoy the ride every week. “Livin’ the dream”. Keep having fun

Thank you so much! I feel that way too, and then I run into a bommie (coming soon) or botch a sail change and feel like a total newbie again. This life keeps you on your toes! Thanks for watching!

Beveridge reef is one of the most interesting places in the Pacific. All those half-sunk old volcanoes are amazing. Thinking about what was happenning there when this giant was active. HOWEVER, as for its remoteness, I was surprised and, on behalf of citizens of the Tonga, quite indignant that you didn't count Nuku'alofa, the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga, as an "urban center". It's 24,000 people!!!! Bigger than THREE state capitals of Vermont, South Dacota and Montana.

Kieran looked so much older in that first clip laying there. He looked like hes 16. Probably just a camera angle, but both of them have grown so much on this journey

Not just the camera, he’s starting to get a tiny tiny mustache. And his voice is changing. 🤯

@sailing_scout I noticed that little stash starting. The light caught it for a second.

Good job to who ever taught the boy how to sew. I imagine it was mom. My mom also taught me and when I went away to boot camp I was one of two guys who knew how to sew a button back on a shirt. It's one of those skills that everyone should have.

My boys were taught to sew on buttons, use a sewing machine for straight stitch, clean, cook (they are so good cooking,!).

Every time I see Beveridge reef name, I imagine a british "explorer" in his ruched crocheted collar, skin-tight pantalons and a curly wig sitting on the deck of an 18-century schooner sipping whiskey and saying "Higgins, we'll call this a Beverage reef... wirte it down on the map" and a young boy from Dickens's novels writes it down "be-ve-ridge reaf"... Done suh!

🤣. So that’s really funny, but it’s also probably almost 100% historically accurate.

If you haven't already, go back to the first one and follow the story of the start ro where they are now. A testimony to self learning the ropes and journey to being experienced, IMO master, sailing cruisers.

Thanks Dave! One thing I’ve realized when talking to other cruisers is that I’m more hesitant to get professional help than some. Makes things more painful in the moment but very beneficial long term.

If that is the most remote anchorage or not, as long as you enjoyed it that is all that matters. Keep having fun.

14:00 JESUS MARY AND JOSEPH! You forgot to add tomato juice and ginger extract! That poor Miele is going "DONNERWETTER! VOT IS ZIS FRAU MACHEN?" What's wrong with the proper Miele detergents and fabric softeners. You even have the capsule dispenser!!! And that stain can easily be removed by the TwinDos solutions and PowerWash.

Conceptually, I cannot find fault with sending an 11-year-old girl to snorkel while an aggressively behaving shark is swimming around. Realisticallly, though, I would probably call it a day after the first attack. The shark is behaving unusually, you don't know anything about sharks' behavior, so... MAYBE...

Yeah, that encounter definitely makes me a bit more wary.
