This is how to do a heavy song. Heir Apparent proves that you don't need constant blast beats, production that sounds like godzilla vomiting into a toilet and lyrics about creeping around a morgue at night to play basketball with a disembodied head in order to make some seriously heavy stuff. It's so weird to be a fan of Opeth but having problem with meandering, and song structure being random. It's the essence of Opeth. But by listening enough to it, your brain gets the map of the songs, and can dance with them. That's what Opeth is to me. Songs don't need to make sense or to have smooth transitions to be great.

@@BecomeTheKnight I wholeheartedly agree. I honestly think that the long endings and the way they ended some of the songs in this album (especially this one, Burden with the detuning guitars, and Lotus Eater with the weird funky part) kinda signals that they were over this particular sound. I am late to the party here, but I think that's one of the reasons I love opeth, they throw at you sections that you never thought that were possible, they seem to don't fit, they don't have much composition meaning, but they sound amazing. I actually think this is my favorite opeth ending, it's the best climax for a song like this, after all that angst you finally get an emotional release, but the beauty is that you don't know if emotionally the release involves good or bad feelings, it's just releasing, you can interpret that as you see fit.

But lately I've been enjoying Monuments. Criminally under rated. Completely different from Opeth in the way that they're more modern rather than classical, but there are bits and moments which I find reminiscent.

I always loved the riffs and melodies found in heavier songs like this one, but I struggled with enjoying the growls. I only enjoyed certain singer’s growls and screams like Corey Taylor. Maybe I just need to listen to it more and I’ll come around to it. Regardless, thank you Mike for all of the great videos and for exposing me to the album Damnation. Rock on!🤘🤘

Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth) and Christian Älvestam (first three Scar Symmetry albums) were the first instances when I enjoyed growling, and still the best ones to do it imo. Check out Holographic Universe by Scar Symmetry if you want, it is a masterpiece! Pretty different vibe from Opeth, more a futuristic atmosphere to it.

I wouldn't want a single second to be shaved off this track. That transition in the middle really does stand out, but I don't think in a bad way. It feels like an event, part of the journey. I don't mind having a bit more of a break there either lol.
The outro, I disagree that it doesn't have a connection to the rest, especially with the subject matter of the track. The emotion up to that point is anger, but the end feels like a response of helpless resignation. I actually believe that it wouldn't tug on your heartstrings the same way if it was a more standard transition. Makes me wonder how many great musical moments are out there to be discovered by breaking the rules 🤘

Great choice. Curious if you’ve ever listened to the band Pagan’s Mind? Very heavy dream theatre influence, I enjoy them a lot. 🤘🤘🤘

I've always imagine the afterending as the ten thousandth hangover & even implying that this depressing story will be lived ten thousand times more due to its repetition.
