if you skip shin gozilla, you missing the only good godzilla movie out there
When it comes to the pronunciation of Shikishima, I've noticed that most Americans pronounce it "shiki-SHI-ma" and the Japanese actors in the film pronounce it either "shi-KISH-ima" or "shi-KI-shi-MA".

I'm pretty sure the mosterverse Godzilla' atomic breath is much more powerful. This was different, but monsterverse burned a hole half way through the planet.
This won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, as you can see that the VFX artists put a lot of love, time, effort and patience into making this movie happen.
They also did it for a fraction of the cost of most Hollywood movies that even get nominated for the category.
Believe the main VFX Artist was the Director himself....
And they did it cheaper and more efficient than the big studios as well!
The team was visibly moved when they won, too. So happy for them, they deserve it!
They did with the VFX team of less than 100 people.
My favourite part of the final battle is that nobody dies. The whole message about choosing to live really hits home here, where all of these citizens willingly go out there to defeat Godzilla in a way where everybody lives, especially Shikishima.
The black spot on Noriko's neck is made up of G cells from Godzilla, which have been known to be mutagenic in some Godzilla properties. I personally believe it's the reason she survived by being mutated with Godzilla's healing factor.
I hadn't noticed that and though I was glad that she survived, I was confused how she could've lived and hope this theory and godzilla's survival means we'll get a sequel
@yunomaplecakes8338 I hope so as well. Seeing the horror of people being taken over by G-cells would be terrifying on the big screen.
The director subtly implied this theory recently. Some fans also think this could lead to a potential mutation like Biollante.
Hopefully she doesn't unleash an atomic blast whenever she burps or farts.

The black rain is something that happened after the bomb fell on Hiroshima. The ash, fallout debris thrown in the air mixed with the clouds above creating black rain. Thus it happens in this movie and is my theory for how Noriko gets Godzilla's cells in her body and survives.
The only Godzilla movie where I actually cared about every single human character. It was fantastic.

It buikds so much anxiety seeing these people you love and knowing this MONSTER is going to show up any second.
And the horror that came from Godzilla, too.
What makes this Godzilla stand out is how they (finally) emphasized the human characters instead of just treating them like an afterthought. It's by far my favorite Godzilla movie of them all, actually making me ugly cry at the end.
I desperately want this to apply to the transformers franchise but at least we got a amazing godzilla movie
It's literally the master class on how a blockbuster epic should be done. If you don't care about the characters, the danger isn't that real. Here, I wasn't sure anyone would survive.
The budget for this movie being less than $15 million is crazy. What the hell is Hollywood doing with their budgets?

One of the factors to that is main stream actors. The Rock gets paid 20 million for being in a movie. So imagine this movie but with main stream actors. The budget would go crazy and they would most likely have to cut back on the effects to be able ti afford the actors

If they paid to Hollywood scale, this budget would have been many times greater.
Hollywood uses that budget to sniff kids and for them flights to a certain island 😂😂
Yamasaki said Godzilla was heavily inspired by his cat, so getting easily distracted by a plane flying around checks out lol
Honestly, of all the animals to compare Godzilla to, a cat is the best comparison. You have a bunch of older films with Godzilla rolled up in a ball as he sleeps...covering his eyes. You have wanton destruction for practically no reason. You have a cowardly selfishness expressed from Godzilla at times but also a crazy dangerous mode where he is a freak of nature that cannot be stopped and refuses to back down. You have both creatures making constant meowing/roaring for no reason...letting those teeth bare. Both can make derpy faces at time.
This Godzilla borrows from other iterations, but it goes for the version that Godzilla was an evolved prehistoric creature that survived to modern day. When it was hit by the nuclear bomb tests, it caused him to rapidly mutate an unstoppable beast with the atomic breath. In fact, main Godzilla's skin isn't just scales, but are keloid scars left from the bomb's burns. That’s actually how the original 54 Godzilla's skin was supposed to resemble. The director also confirmed before he was hit by the bomb, Godzilla already had regenerative properties which allowed him to survive the bomb, but his healing factor caused him to rapidly mutate due to the fallout
I found this film so refreshing, a modern monster movie that allows a monster to be a monster and not make them the hero or relatable 👌👌👌

You can tell this Godzilla’s behavior was based on the director’s cat. It also allows you to view his actions as one of two ways.
A) His destruction felt more curious and playful than anger. He gets distracted by his own explosions. Even when killing people, he feels like a cat being proud about killing a mouse.
It honestly makes him more scary that he both is and isn’t aware of the carnage he’s wrought.
B) He is intelligent and sentient like most other incarnations of Godzilla, and is taking his anger out on Japan for the nuke. There's a great fan-monologue about Godzilla's motivations I always loved... "I was the last of my kind, and you turned me into the first. That is why I punish you... because I never though I could be made more alone."
Which is why I believe this Godzilla and Godzilla from 1954-1964 was/is an anti-villian because while he's an enemy....there's a legitimate reason why Godzilla did what he did.

i think youre just assuming/projecting your reasons. Godzilla is just more animal-like in this one than in the american movies where hes more of a guarding sentinel

How they got that baby to cry on command was crazy lol. That and the CGI I was most impressed with. A true 10/10 movie.

No, they didn’t. They worked around her moods. They shot her crying scenes when she, being a toddler, decided she was upset about something and started crying on her own.
Sumiko,Noriko,Tachibana,and the Boat Crew with The Scientist/The Captain and the Kid were the realest.
I swear I have not seen this movie without crumbling into Tears everytime I go into the third act.
I also love how they push the Message of "The Preservation of Life is a Victory".
This is the kind of Godzilla that my son appreciated. He spent a lot of time explaining him as an allegory for the atomic bomb; he's currently teaching Science Fiction As Literature at a local Community College, and I imagine that this would be a very useful aspect in his toolbox...

I'm glad Jen enjoyed this depiction of Godzilla because this is very classic and what Godzilla is/was supposed to be. Instantly became my favorite Godzilla movie when I saw this in theaters. By the way the appearance time of Godzilla in this movie is just about 12 minutes. Speaks to how well they crafted the human story in this.
The fish looked weird because they were deep sea fish and they popped on the surface. That's my theory.
Yep, deep sea pressure change like that messes up any sea creatures' bodies, the biggest example being the Blobfish. It also acts as foreshadowing for what they plan to do against Godzilla

This is what happen when you have a team of creators that aboslutely love and care about every single thing they make. They didn't do it for the money, they did it because they love what they do
I love this movie. I saw it 8 times in theaters, and I recently bought the Japanese collector's edition blu-ray set. Hopefully, we get an english version of that set. It's fantastic.

If you're curious what the letter Shikishima sent to the mechanic Tachibana said, it's actually read out loud in the official novelization.
"I was with Sosaku Tachibana on Odo Island. It is said that the Odo Island Massacre was caused by an attack by the US military, but the truth is completely different. In fact, Tachibana recklessly fired at a US military ship passing off the coast. As a result of the US military's counterattack, all the young soldiers garrisoned on Odo Island were killed in action. Throughout the attack, Tachibana abandoned his responsibility and fled deep into the mountains. Godzilla Minus One was an incredible experience in the theatre. I will genuinely never forget all of the sound being muffled out when Godzilla uses his atomic breath for the first time. It was such an insane piece of sound design.
This is actually like what Godzilla was in the original a force of pure destruction
It is really interesting to see people who are really only familiar with the Americanized Godzilla react to this one. Because they often have questions like she did, wondering why Godzilla is here and being mean without a monster to protect humans from. Godzilla started out as a terrible beast that was no one's friend in 1954, but commercial success changed that.

If Godzilla has an atomic breath then the impact should look like an atomic explosion. This movie actually got it right. Something the monsterverse movies didn't get right.

No. His breath attack is just Atomic energy powered. So it can be anything they want it to be. Could be a Jet breathe, Laser, Atomic Flame Thrower, or whatever. This movie just did the interesting thing of making it an atomic bomb energy missile.
Monsterverse did justice to what japanese Godzilla's atomic breath always were, a blue laser that deals massive damage. Minusgoji did something different, unexpected for sure, but a welcomed one.
Ps : if monsterverse Goji had such atomic breath, imo he'd be too op, like have u seen how many times he used it in GvK?

You should also give the original Japanese Gojira 1954 and Shin Godzilla a watch too. Both classics.

I think Godzilla goes into "duck-mode" in deep water and that's how he "stands" upright

Yeah, he's basically treading water. I imagine that his feet and tail are slowly moving to keep him at the surface.
One thing that I loved to see was the reaction of the Godzilla minus one team being nominated for the Oscar. I got so emotional hearing the OG theme play when they won the Oscar for the VFX award. I remember watching the heisei goji movies as a kid and loving each and every single one.
The ending made me think of a possible Biollante storyline coming up in the future movies, but that’s just me speculating. Mostly because I absolutely love the design and lore behind Biollante monster. I would be very interested to see what they do with a modern take on Biollante,
Man, I cried, too! They weren’t these jaded people winning a trophy, they looked genuinely happy.

Tried to see it again when I was in Japan in January. There was a Godzilla statue next to the theater.
It's been said that if this movie was made with the exact same actors in post-war Japan detailing the trauma, tribulations and later redemption of the former kamikaze pilot BUT leaving out Godzilla, the film would have received far more awards, including a best picture nomination at the Academy Awards. Suffice to say, at least it won a well deserved Oscar for Best Visuals. I also give it a 10 out of 10.
This is the first Godzilla movie where I actually was invested in the human characters and cared about them.
Holden’s monologue over the montage had me cracking up.
My son and I saw this movie on premier day in the theater bec my son has been a huge Godzilla fan since he was 4 years old. He has seen every Godzilla movie ever made. His favorites are the 60’s cheesy dubbed guy-in-a-suit Godzilla movies.
We were literally speechless at the end of this movie. That silence at the end when Godzilla is powering up had me holding my breath and then when we saw the plane fly in, I had goosebumps!
This movie had everything. I actually cared about the characters and what was happening to them. I also cheered out loud when it won an Oscar for special effects. The ‘Godzilla’ effects were great but the explosions caused by the atomic breath were jaw dropping.
This movie is a masterpiece. I also loved this iteration. He wasn’t a misunderstood hero protecting humans. This was just a pi$$ed off monster. Mean and terrifying! Chef’s kiss!😚
This one is the single Godzilla flick I genuinely felt for the humans, not just one but all of them, cared for them and rooted against The King. This was perfection, if a better Godzilla film can be made I dare them to try and make it.
This film is a staggering achievement, especially considering the budget. Loved it.
This was one of the biggest surprise movies I can remember in ages. I saw it in theaters and was blown away. This is an example of fantastic storytelling. Most monster/kaiju movies force the human characters into taking up way too much of the movie when all we want to see are destructive fights. This goes the other way and leans even more onto the characters, but with actual purpose. Hell, you could actually take Godzilla out of this movie and it would still have a terrific foundation for a good movie. I watched this once in theaters and have watched it twice on Netflix (sub and dub) and the sub is far superior. Normally I am not a snob when it comes to that and will usually just pick the dub for convenience, but the emotion of this movie fits much better with the sub, so I'm glad you went that route because it really makes this movie shine more.

It is fascinating how complex Godzilla has become. In the Legendary features, he is more or less become comic book superhero. In this feature, he is pure evil AND at his most terrifying! (yes, the Showa & Heisei features reflected that complexity as well).
The thing on her neck might be indicative that she was infected with G cells somehow.
In reference to the Ginza Attack Scene: Godzilla expels his own biological material when his shoots his heat ray. There's an audio snippet in the film during the aftermath of the blast stating foreign biological material was found along with elevated radioactive readings. That's Godzilla G-Cells.
The Black Rain is a true phenomena immediately after an atomic blast. The radioactive dust/dirt/debris that went airborne form into rain droplets and fall back to the ground as Black Rain and is highly radioactive.
This is literally one of my favorite Godzilla films now and I can't stop thinking about it! I watched it 4 times! Two times the standard version, One time the Minus Color Version, and then recently rewatched the standard version again on Netflix just a week ago, and it is STILL a phenomenal film! And if you didn't know, YES! There is a black-and-white version of this film callee Godzilla Minus One Minus Color! And this film marks the first time the Godzilla franchise as ever won an Oscar, and it's about TIME since Godzilla has been such a popular cultural icon for 70 years now!
This movie was so good to watch in theaters. One of my favorite movies of the year. Around the end of the year i always decide to go see random movies that pop out to me and this was one of them. So glad i did it was amazing
Half a year later, I’m still gushing about this movie. They took Godzilla being a metaphor for nuclear devastation and expanded it, making him a walking metaphor for PTSD. He attacks from the depths. His atomic breath could be viewed as a metaphor for Shikishima’s moments of freak out: his very breathing hurts himself just as much as the people around him. Every time Shikishima gets a little bit of a respite, Godzilla just pops back up even more pissed as hell. When Godzilla screams at the mushroom cloud that created him, it coincides with Shikishima’s scream at the monster that created him. They are so opposite and yet still one in the same.
Heyy holden fun fact about godzillas roar is that it was the orignal roar just replayed through speakers, once i saw it was netflix i was absolutely losing my mind knowing u were gonna react!
My prediction for the mark on her neck is part of godzillas cells. That's how she survived, but when the g man comes back, she will be connected to godzilla, thus having to kill herself to kill godzilla.
The cells came off when the tanks shot at him in the city.

When I got out of theater I was not expecting to have seen a Godzilla movie that was more a tale if survivors guilt & PTSD. Loved it so much.

I'm glad you saw this movie. I'm Japanese, but the director, Takashi Yamazaki, commented on the birthmark on Noriko's neck. Pieces of Godzilla's flesh were found on the streets of Ginza, and Noriko, who was blown away by the blast, came into contact with an unknown substance. And Godzilla has the power to regenerate. This movie seems like it has a happy ending, but it's not. From a Japanese Godzilla fan.
The way Godzilla’s spikes pop out as the energy builds up then push back in making him expel the energy blast and it’s causing an atomic explosion was such a nice touch. This movie was incredible to see in theaters.
The spikes are a design from how nuclear rods are moved in a core, they are "popped out" when the energy is to be released and are used to keep the energies from building past critical mass and basically keeping everything from going KABOOM!!!! They eventually pop back in when Godzilla needs to build another blast, like chambering a shotgun round before firing it off....ultra cool design agreed!

What a great movie. It gets the human element right. It gets the spirit of classic Godzilla right. It gets the movie nostalgia right. I love both the iconic Godzilla roar and the musical score used when humanity goes up against Godzilla.
You mentioned watching "Grave of the Fireflies". That is an emotionally powerful movie. I've always felt that any world leader considering starting a war should be forced to watch "Grave of the Fireflies" first.
Definitely one of the best movie experiences in 2023! And obe of the best Godzilla films.

As far as the black mark on the wife's neck, I think it was some sort of Godzilla's radiation from the attack. You'll also notice that she looks pretty dang good for a girl that got blown up, which suggests that she might have some super crazy healing factor now. She might be connected to Godzilla in some way now. Maybe a drone of his, or maybe she'll turn into a monster in the future. Who knows. But I think the black mark is definitely some radiation burn that's from Godzilla's atomic breath, and I definitely think it healed her.
The thing embedded into Noriko's neck is G-Cells that came from Godzilla's flesh blasted by the tanks before the Atomic Breath.
The director told a crowd of fans in Osaka Godzilla Fest that Noriko eventually died but the G-Cells regenerated back and made her live. It's parallel with the end scene shown Godzilla's cell regenerated means it is still alive.
This G-Cells is an easter egg/call back to Godzilla vs Biollante (1989) movie.
It's true, Godzilla has always had the ability to regenerate. They always talk about it in the older movies, they just didn't have the CGI back then to properly portray it.

I know it’s kind of a remake of the original, but I hope you guys will still give that one a watch. It holds up. I showed it to my mom who has basically seen nothing of Godzilla and she loved it. She also loved this one

I think you two should definitely watch the original 1954 film sometime in the near future. Godzilla minus one and Godzilla 1954 (aka gojira) have often been compared to one another as to which film should take the spot as the best godzilla film in the franchise. Love to hear your guy's thoughts as always
Absolutely loved this movie. I'm not a big fan of the Monsterverse movies, I never really understood why, considering they're right up my alley. But this movie really shows me what I was missing from our films. I don't want a Godzilla who's a superhero and the movie centers so much on being an action film...I want Godzilla to be terrifying and mysterious, and this movie captured that perfectly.
I'm glad Jen said she'd watch it again. The Minus Color version should come out to streaming within a few months. It's well worth the time and really makes a difference.
28:57 Godzilla is preoccupied with Shikishima’s plane buzzing about him so the two ships can encircle the kaiju with the freons and buoys attached cable. Without Shikishima distracting Godzilla, the plan would have failed.
Now all I can think about is Godzilla popping up saying, “Scoreboard!”
I think you're going to have to get Jen into watching the original Godzilla (1954) film' along with other sequels in the series, this is something that you can have her explore and give her a better understanding of Godzilla's world.
As for minus one I too give it a perfect score of 10/10.👍
The reason why Godzilla is above the water from the deepest trench of the ocean is because he has a lot of fat at his lower stomach and legs, allowing him to float at will
A super rare movie that not only lives up to the hype, but is even underrated. I love that the attack on Ginza is almost a 1:1 modern reboot is Godzilla's first attack in 1954. Even biting the rail car in half and destroying the Nippon Theatre. All the while the original Godzilla score playing in the background. Just chef's kiss!
Loved this movie when I went to see it in Dec....Fun thing for me was I had recently returned from a solo trip to Japan (to UK) just a few weeks earlier...And while on the return flight I watched a couple of Japanese subtitled movies..one of those being "Dr Coto's Clinic"....Then while watching "Godzilla Minus One" I realised I had see the actors before somewhere to remember I saw them in "Dr Coto's Clinic". Both Hidetaka Yoshioka and Ryunosuke Kamiki are main characters in the movie!...I was in Japan to see my favourite band LIVE for a second time..after flying out to Japan in Jan earlier in the year to see them...During my Jan trip I visited Shinjuku which has a hotel with the head on Godzilla hanging over the roof...It lights up and puffs smoke as I recall...You can book and stay in a room which has the balcony of the Godzilla head on it....I also stopped off at the Shin Godzilla statue near Hibiya Station during my hotel transfer day. (between Shibuya and Ariake)..During my second trip I stopped to take photo's of the Family Mart conbini store in Taishido which has a large King Kong model hanging on to the front of the store.
I haven't been more excited in my life I watched this I. The original release and in black in white in theaters and it is hands down one of my favorite of all time I hope you guys enjoy like I did 😃 pure love of cinema🎉

This movie was sooooooooooo good, that I didn't even know what I was watching. That's how good it was. The entire movie was a completely 'different' experience entirely. Can't say the last time I was in a movie theater and found myself at times gripping the hand rest as if something was going to happen to ME.
The closest movies I can compare it to are the ones this movie gives odes to: Jurassic Park. Jaws. Dunkirk. Star Wars. And of course, the original Godzilla. To put this into perspective, I was there when Jaws and Star Wars came out. I was a little kid at the time, but this was before PG-Ratings and parents were taking whole families to see even the scariest of movies. Godzilla Minus 1 is like that. A breath-taking viewing from start to finish. A roller coaster ride of emotions from beginning to end. The writing. The acting. The sound. The action. Superb... all of them. Only a hand full of films can I say made me feel good about being alive. This is 1 of them.
Godzilla Minus 1 shows us the absurdity and extreme consequences of war, throwing a floodlight on a part of our human history we are all uncomfortable viewing and talking about. We have way too many of those. This movie hints in a refreshing and so desperately needed, wished for and desired direction of change.
We here at all things NexA.R.K as well as everything All1llA believe, among other things, that Humanity is 1 human being. Just as our individual human bodies have billions of moving parts and pieces, so too is it the 1 Human Body. The only difference is, our individual billions of parts and pieces all work together as a unit to do and perform in a 24 hr day period our every wish, will and desire. Humanity has not evolved to that awareness yet, but that awareness is coming. Soon. Like a child's first moments of awareness of its many limbs, hands and feet, just before it takes its 1st step. Eventually, we as human beings, functioning as 1 unit, will take ours. We got here to this state of technological marvel by way of war, destruction and conflict. Imagine what we could do united as 1... warp speed, simply too slow.
By way of watching this movie, three times, the word 'Godzilla' has been on my mind as of late. 'All1llA' simply means 'All is 1 and 1 is All'. I have a license plate that reads 'ALLIZW1' and an email that reads 'alliz1zilla'. You can see my obsession with this idea. 'All1llA' and 'alliz1zilla' are words called 'palindromes' - words pronounced the same way forwards or backwards, or what I like to call 'butterfly/mirror' images. Using this imagery in partial reverse with the word Godzilla, we have 'All Iz God'. Taking it a step further, 'All Iz God and God Iz All'. Just saying.
I will close with this. I think the main connection this movie has with me and the audience is that, even the worst of us, the coward of us can sometimes redeem ourselves and become the hero who saves us all. From a zero to a Hero. That is a very powerful message. 🤔

Holden mention Minus one Godzilla atomic breath was the most powerful atomic breath they shown so far which may be true but it doesn't stand up to the legendary Godzilla atomic breath who also would be able to absorb minus one atomic breath like other nuclear bombs he absorbed throughout the franchise. Minus one Godzilla breath does not have the same versatility as Shin Godzilla atomic beans either. Also Shin Godzilla and Minus one Godzilla together are barely the size of legendary Godzilla. Minus one Godzilla does have the best healing of any Godzilla to date but he also has the weakest durability. Shin Godzilla has some of the best durability while still lacking a lot of agility which means if they decide to continue shin Godzilla movies he would not stand too good of a chance against another Kaiju.

Although it is not mentioned in the movie, I guess Shikishima and the crew members who participated in the operation were exposed to radiation...
I don't think I will ever watch this in any way but B&W with subtitles. I have been a Godzilla fan for 56 years, seen them all... this is BRILLIANT! My #1!
Saw this in the theatre walking out I thought what an amazing movie. The original Godzilla movie he is a true monster as well.
The mark on her neck at the hospital is a Godzilla cell. It's probably why she survived the blast. It helped to heal her.
But to what end? Will she mutate? Are there other victims who similarly contracted the Godzilla cell?
I've also heard that the tattoo on her neck is a symbol for Mothra. Perhaps Mothra will be featured in the next movie?? -OG

I believe the reason (at least in part) Kong gets more spotlight than Godzilla in the recent films is that, well, Universal owns the rights to King Kong but they have to lease the Godzilla IP from Toho, who after the '98 film are super protective and picky about how he is portrayed.
Fun fact number 1: Takashi Yamazaki the director of this film is a big fan of Godzilla, he also featured Godzilla as a cameo in "Always: Sunset on Third Street" in 2005 and he is the director of "Godzilla the Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle" which has the design the same for Godzilla in this film
I feel Jen should see the 1954 Godzilla to see the original version of Godzilla as a monster. A few recent Japanese version have been good as well such as Shin Godzilla.
The neck thing seems to be a tease to a sequel. Still unknown.

The fish look weird because they are deep sea fish forced to the surface by the current Godzilla creates when he swims up. They have a "swim bladder" that over-expands when the water pressure drops. It kills them. This is also foreshadowing for how they attack Godzilla at the end.

Finally got to watch this last night, and I thought the English Dub was not bad at all. In fact, I think it added to the nostalgia. Best Godzilla movie, hands down.
I like the more realistic approaches to Godzilla, like the atomic breath scene here vs the new one thats just a fun ability she spams on cooldown

Godzilla was never a good guy. funny how everyone says that the American Godzilla is a good guy, but for real he never fought this other Kaijus to protect humans. He did so just to demonstrate that he's the top alpha around. The American Godzilla is not a good guy. Tell that to all the cities he has level and thousands he has kill fighting this other Kaijus, specially the city that Godzilla, Kong, scar king, and shimo destroyed.
